First had: on tap at Night Shift
A basic stout here. Dark brown-black pour with a small cap of tan head that receded to a ringlet. Supposedly chicory and ginger in this beer, but I didn't really get any of it in the aroma or taste. What I did get was your typical dark malt roastiness, notes of coffee and cocoa, maybe a mild herbal/earthy hop profile in there as well. Body was about medium, and rather thin for a stout. Ok, but not great. I wouldn't commit to a whole bottle of this.

In a tulip, this beer was very dark brown, almost black, with some garnet. There was a small tan head.
I found the aroma to be a little on the meek side. Roasted malt/coffee. Sweet.
The taste improved on the aroma. Dark coffee, sweet chocolate; nicely juxtaposed. There was a bit of spiciness that I hadn't detected in the aroma.
I thought this beer was a bit on the thin side. Definitely not as robust as I was expecting.

Starts with a beige, lasting head. Some spotty, but streaky lace. The color is dark brown but light shines through the edges.
Strong smell of star anise and pepper. Doesn't smell like a stout at all--no coffee or chocolate.
Very thin body for the style. Again, not much classic stout flavor. I would describe it as a souped up brown ale. The initial taste is actually watery. More flavor comes in the swallow. A friend of mine describes it to be like peppermint although I can't find it--I find it more peppery. It's a bit astringent like black tea.

Poured from a 750 into a mug, the beer has a translucent hazelnut coloring while pouring, and settles into a very dark brown, ruby highlighted coloring. One inch, filmy, light tan head that quickly settles and then disappears. Aromas of earthy tannins, oaky highlights, and a dark, bitter cocoa character. Smells rich and bold, but still light somehow. Flavors of rich and robust bitter chocolate initially, with a dark roasted backbone. Earthy overtones take the edge off the bitter profiles. Very light and smooth in mouth. Rich, chocolatey aftertaste with a bittersweet highlight. Smooth, clean finish with a bitter dryness that cleans everything up nicely.

Pours a very dark brown color with a small eggshell head that recedes to leave some spotty lacing.
Aromas begin with a lot of fresh Chicory and ginger. Compared to Chicory Stout from Dogfish Head, this is much more upfront. Then there is some powdery cocoa and brown breadiness but the spices are super up front.
The tastes follow the nose, with the brown breadiness and the baker's cocoa but soon you get a ton of Ginger and more roasty Chicory. The flavor profile at first is interesting but soon becomes taxing and
The mouthfeel is really the suffering point of this beer; it is super light bodied for a 7% offering and lacks the umph needed for an Stout. Finish is spicy and that's pretty much all.
Overall, nice experiment, needs tweaking to improve base beer/mouthfeel and balance out the spice flavors. Would make a super Winter seasonal if it was a tad bit less spicy and more full bodied.
