Poured from 33 cl bottle into a weizen.

A: Very dark golden hue. Pours about a half finger, foamy, white head. No real head.

S: Wheat, fresh tea, and cola.

T: Pungent wheaty tone. Heavy on the cola. A little...walnut in there methinks.

M: Light body, a little punchy. Slightly bitter finish.

D: Session style.

Atmosphere is decent. Dark hue, nice head, but no lacing. Nose is only slightly reminiscent of wheat, with this cola thing much more prominent. Also, cola flavor is the most outstanding characteristic. Not bad, just not really a characteristic weizen. Overall, this is a pretty decent quaff.

A: The color is slightly hazy pale golden while the enormously tall white compact but still light head settles after a while leaving nice lacings.

S: Ripe banana, but not overly sweet. Citric fruits along side with fresh cut grass. Yeast and a mild spicy smell completes the fruityness.

T: Surprisingly dry and bitter. Still very obvious a Hefeweizen with the ripe bananas and the spices (mainly coriander) as well as the yeast. A bit sour. Ripe oranges.

M: Aftertaste lingers with a bitter sourness. Body is on the thinner side and carbonation is rich - just as everything should be.

O: The germans sure know their Weizens. This is a nice north German Hefe with a little drier and less sweet feel.

Big blow-off when opening the swing-top. Settles down to a frothy light amber in the glass. Fairly spritzy on the tongue.

The estery flavors of banana and clove are in evidence. The clove seems to emerge more in the aftertaste after sipping a while. The body and general feel is pretty flabby. This seems rather sweet and bland. It seems to be lacking in the touch of sharpness that marks the Hefeweizens I prefer. Maybe it's all in the atmosphere-- a whiff of hot pretzels and some raucous singing might improve this. It's quite spicy in the nose but less interesting in the mouth.

The 33 cl bottle has the date of 11/08/13 on it. No alcohol content. Purchased at H and H Beverage in Abilene, Texas.

Bottle from Beertopia in Omaha, NE
Best before 01.15.13 stamped on label
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass

Flensburger's hefeweizen is a solid-looking, great-smelling, and only acceptably tasting German wheat beer. The problem lies in the strong aroma that gives the drinker a strong impression of coming greatness, but the taste is rather tame and mellowed out, whereas I wanted something bolder and stronger in flavor. The freshness of my bottle leads me to believe that if there is any oxidation, it is minimal, and that this is just a lighter wheat beer with a great aroma. If it was the only thing available in my area, it would be a good beer, but Weihenstephaner, Ayinger, and Franziskaner are all readily available and at the same or lower price point.

Pours a fairly massive head of white bubbles that are large in size, and quite retentive. Head lasts for minutes, eventually descending to a 0.3cm cap atop the beer throughout the entire drinking session. Leaves minimal, if any, lacing along sides of glass. Beer's body is a light copper-orange color with pale yellow highlights, lighter when placed near a light source, and opaque from suspended yeast. Carbonation is clearly visible along sides of glass.

Solid aroma of banana-like esters, brewer's yeast, phenol (pie spice), vanilla, wheat twang, and light citrus tartness. A very appealing and complex aroma.

Taste is somewhat of a let-down after the very pleasing aroma. While the major components are there, this is a very "pale" tasting wheat beer, other adjectives being "light," "fainter than not," and "not strong." The right flavors are all there, just not in as strong force as the aroma would suggest. The front of the tongue detects wheat malt, phenolic twang, apple juice, and some biscuit-like maltiness. Mid-palate picks up mild lemon citrus, some banana ester, continued wheat malt, and some bland cardboard flavor. Back of palate detects heartier banana esters and slight flash of lemon citrus. Aftertaste is primarily of wheat malt, somewhat biscuit-like, with residual citrus notes.

Beer is medium-bodied with modest carbonation, letting this slide along the palate at a modest pace, but resulting in somewhat placid stillness as well: could use more carbonation. Overall mouthfeel is smooth, with a fairly dry finish.

Poured into a goblet a deep orange with a thin head, aroma was hard to pick up (outdoors grill going) but just enough fruit and hops. The taste was very nice, the citrus and spice coming through with a smooth, hoppy, pleasant finish. I'll pick this one up again.
