On the bottle: OG: 1.071 / IBU: 70 / Malts: Two Row, Crystal 60, Munich, Carapils, and Aromatic Malt. Mucho Lupulo.
The front of the label also warns: "Precaución extrema cantidad de lupulo aroma y sabor intenso" ...or for those who do not speak Spanish: "Caution extreme amount of hop aroma and flavor"
I picked up four 22oz bombers last night down in Tijuana at a new beer bar down there called CBC Tasting Room. They were around $6. each. The one i'm drinking now for the review was poured into a Brouwerij 't IJ branded tulip glass.
Pours a slightly hazed copper hue with a fat white head that sticks around for a few sips giving way to solid amounts of lacing in my glass from start to finish. The smell is sweet and bready, with tropical fruit and strong aromas of pine and citrus. The flavor is big and there is certainly no shortage of tasty hoppiness as the warning on the bottle stated - I can't place the hops - Cascade and Amarillo come to mind. The hop flavor is grapefruit, floral and very spicey...almost peppery. The balance of the malt (and what a great harmony of so many malt varieties) is on point and works harmoniously with the aggressive hoppiness of the beer. Tropical fruit and apricot esters are present with an earthy note that lingers a while blending well with the other flavors and balancing the hop aggression perfectly. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with perfect carbonation for the style - the finish is crisp and clean and the hop oil coats the mouth and leaves a lingering bitterness that makes it difficult to follow up with any other type of ale - a true palate wrecker!
All around very well balanced flavors, yet still hop-forward, which makes this one a little better than a lot of the West Coast IPA's that are popping up on the shelves these days. This one is definitely a cut above your average IPA. I also like that one has to make a journey south of the border to enjoy this little Mexican gem - it's well worth the travel!
