There was a Papa John's that used to be open nearby. Whenever me and a friend has the spontaneous munchies for that pizza, we would place our order, walk over to Hanshaw Liquor for beer and soda, then return for the pizza. I already knew the place has a decent beer selection for a beer lover like myself, but a spontaneous trip down Chapman (PCH chili fries!) brought me inside Hanshaw for a soda and beer.
"The usual". Several tiny aisles filled with foodstuffs, lotto tickets, liquor behind the counter, lots of coolers filled with sodas, beer, and wine. And it's reasonably clean inside.
All the beer is kept cold. They bottles and 6-packs are organzied reasonably well, and there are pricetags listed for each product. I haven't run into a quality problem with the beer I'm drinking from here, though I did spot a Stone Pale Ale 6'er a month out of the "enjoy by". Otherwise, the few other bottles I checked for freshness were still away from their "enjoy by" date. You can find beers from Bear Republic, Rogue, Unibroue, Ballast Point, Flying Dog, Leffe, Dogfish Head, Port, Anchor, Lagunitas. All in all, there's good stuff to choose from.
Friendy service is often encountered here, based on previous visits and my visit earlier today.
Overall, Hanshaw Liquor is the best bet for beer around El Modena. Mattern Sausage isn't a bad alternative either, although they only offer German, Czech, and Polish beer.

Upon walking in, it's a pretty standard liquor store. A large bank of fridges has several doors dedicated to craft.
There are some great selections here.
Bring to the front and buy your beer, very quick and easy. Though when I asked about Pliny, they had no idea, even though they carried some RR.
The sign out front says "over 200 microbrews". While I doubt they have this many, I would put the number over 100. Many different breweries are available here, including Deschutes, Unibroue, Alesmith, Port, Avery, DFH, and many others.
Prices are ok, about average for most of the beers, under on some, and over on others.

Pretty much like the last guy described it. Good place to go and pick-up a microbrew or two. You won't find anything out of this world or hard to find but they have plenty of quality. The guy that is always working the counter is nice. Once they had Alesmith IPA listed at $1.99. Of course I jumped on it and bought five or six. As the guy rang them up as $4.99 each I mentioned that they were listed at $1.99. Without an argument he walked back to the fridge with me noticed that it indeed did say $1.99. He took the tag off the shelf and said, "that's a mistake, but you were right." He sold them to me for $1.99. Pretty quality service for a liquor store.
