In downtown rochester there is this little place we call the Dinosaur BBQ. It's basically your run of the mill biker bar with the occational band playing live blues. The food is terrific. Some of the best in the city (second only to Beale Street Cafe IMHO). I am a fan of their ribs. Those are the best in the city. There are few problems. Like clensliness. It has kind of a grungy feel to it. Like sweat and leather. If you closed your eyes you're not sure if your at the Dinosaur or trapped in a bondage movie. The service was pretty good. After the hour or so wait to get my table I was served quickly and had no problems from there on out. I love the beer. Middle Ages Wailing Wench. Good times.

This is an interesting bar in downtown Rochester near the river. I visited on a Monday evening and was surprised to see the place pretty crowded. Mostly, it was young couples and a few families with children. There were about 30 beers on tap and most were from local and regional micros. Nothing outstanding, but nothing crappy either. The food was above average. I had a pork barbecue plate that was OK, but the cornbread was too hard and dry for my taste. Maybe I'm too used to the southern version. I've heard that the Syracuse location of Dinosaur is better, but if you happen to be in Rochester and are looking for a good beer selection and some decent food this place is worth a visit.

Great location. Depending on when you go this is either a great biker bar and lots of nice bikes and leather with great barbecue, or great barbecue/smokehouse with people coming and going from the blue cross arena from a few blocks away, from a preformance. Either way the food I recommend to anyone, best barbecue in the western new york area. Is normally very busy, get there with plenty of time, the wait is worth it. Plenty of choices about 50 plus total. Verity that goes great with the food. Nice place to take out of town co-workers.

Atmosphere: unique; a dive bar BBQ joint you can take the kids to.
Quality: ordered a Lake Placid UBU served cold bit not too cold in the ubiquitous pint glass.
Service: smart alecky wait staff who work to keep things moving as the place is almost always busy.
Selection: nothing outstanding, just a solid tap list. Could have used more porters, brown ales to go with the BBQ.
Food: this is what people come here for. I've never had a bad or even marginal meal here. Ordered the brisket sandwich with fried okra and collards. Delish. Passed on dessert but have had it before and it's great.

Down and dirty with a family feel is the way I would describe the place. The Dinosaur BBQ is an attraction for bikers and brokers alike. They all share a common affinity for a no frills joint with some of the tastiest meat I have ever had. Live blues just about every week, which is an added bonus. The beer is decent(a la the full bar) with some good tap selections and a mostly macro bottle selection, but beer is only an added bonus to the tremendous BBQ the Dino has. Ribs, Pulled Pork all smoked to perfection. Plus their sauces are some of the best in the country. If you want a good place to relax, drink a cold one and eat some damn good food this is the place in Rochester.

Been to this location twice. Second time was on Saturday and they had a great local band playing some great tunes. The food is awesome. They have a variety of combo platters. Their brisquette is quite amazing. The beer selection is above average. Lots of beers from New York are available. I had the brooklyn Black Choclate Stout on tap, Dogfish Head Indian Brown, and the Palo Salto Maron. Decent german bottled beer selection too. Lots of benches to sit outside when the weather is warmer. Great place and good times.

I was in Rochester for business and was psyched that my customer picked this place for dinner. It is cool ramshackle old building. Its roots as a railroad building show. The place is kind of sprawling with a couple of outdoor areas, dedicated eating areas and nice high ceiling bar area. Worn wooden floors & a tin ceiling add to the ambiance. I noticed a small stage in the bar, but while I was there it was filled with diners.
As others have aptly described the Dinosaur, it attracts a cool mix of suits, regular folks and bikers. I really liked the vibe. I would recommend arriving early because by 6:00 the place is packed and the wait for tables appeared to be fairly long.
The service was friendly but slow. I had to wait about 10 minutes for my first beer to arrive. Speaking of beer, they have a nice tap selection with some well thought out choices. Im guessing they have about 30 beers on tap and at least twice as many in bottles. Lots of offerings I cant get in the Midwest, so I was in heaven.
As for the food, the place smells terrific. I made the mistake of getting the bbq prime rib, while the flavor was fine; the meat was extremely tough and chewy. I sampled some of my customers pork plate and immediately realized what I should have ordered. Portions are nice sized and the sides, with the exception of the cornbread, were tasty.
This was a fun place and Im looking forward to my next visit!

I love this place!! Went on a Saturday evening with a party of 4, got there around 5 and we only had to wait a little bit for a table. Waited in the bar, which is a very cool room with old-school (the style, not the movie) memorabilia on the walls. Not a bad place to watch colege football. We actually chatted with a Hell's Angel and he let us use the extra seats at his table (and offered to let us sample his food, haha). Place definitely was getting packed by 5:30/6pm.
Food was great (even though I am not a BBQ/smokehouse person) and portions are HUGE. Two of my friends shared one meal (and not one designed to be shared). Lots of local beer offerings. Our server was knowledgeable about the beer, and though it was a crowded night we weren't rushed out.
We all left stuffed and happy - I'll be going back soon.

i have been to dinosaur barbeque twice now, they were about a year apart, and both times were great, the barbeque is better than some down here in the south witch is saying alot considering i am a barbeque nut. the plate are gigantic. the beer selection is ok, i do like the fact that alot of the beers they have are local. so there are usually beers that i try for the first time. so if you are around the city of rochester i would def. recommend stopping in and getting some damn good food and a few brews. i will go there everytime i come up to rochester!

This place was really dark and crowded. When I was seated I could barely read menus, and the waitress was drowned out by the noise. The atmosphere was the only negative I have of this place. Both quality and service was excelent. The selection of beer was good as well. I chose Genny for the simple fact I was in Rochester and it was an easy choice, not bad for an Adjunct Lager. Food was good, had Chicken and Ribs. I find BBQ better back home in Buffalo, but this is quite possibly the best food in Rochester.
