Appearance: Deep gold colored brew with a slight haze. Lightly carbonated with a pillowy white head with yellow accents.

Smell: Distinct hop presence. Malty backbone.

Taste: Mellow, with a slightly smoky malt flavor. Well balanced hop bitterness that lingers. Almost has a touch of soy sauce flavor in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, dry finish.

Drinkablity: Good brew. Slightly heartier than regular Yebisu. Could easily be a year round offering in Sapporo's portfolio.

A - This beer pours into an average 1-2 fingers of head with minimal lacing. The carbonation fades fairly quickly but it does have a pretty golden honey color. The *cough* can of this extra-premium beer is almost the same design as other yebisu designs but with a tortoise-shell look.

S - The smell is a bit boring. Airy initially, but there is a subtle yeast malt undertone that is just as exciting as white bread and about as strong. You also can't miss "The Hop" (for in Sapporo Co. all other hops shall bow before THE hop)

T - The initial taste is shockingly different from the smell. You get a quick 1 - 2 jab of different hop flavors. Strong initial hop flavor that moves to a smooth honey coated barley taste or maybe a caramel apple. This then goes back to a hoppy aftertaste. I rated this as average, and it is average. But please keep in mind for a Japanese macro this flavor is more complex than differential calculus. So be grateful.

M - Medium body. Some light creamy tones. But not that viscous and not that bubbly. No prizes won here.

D - This is one of the best Japanese macros I've ever had. This is marketed as the premium version of a premium beer, so it really seems a waste that they market it in a can. A bottle or heaven forbid on tap would help this beer a lot, but that's a dream for a different day and different demographic. All in all though, tasty. Try it once.

A- Nice brass color. Pours with nice initial head, but fades to nothing within 2 minutes.

S- Weak hop and molasses. Smells quite sugary.

T- Subtle hop taste develops on the tip of the tongue and spreads gradually to the back of the throat, rounded out by an apple juice aftertaste.

M- Slight smoothness, medium-light body.

D- The apple juice / molasses aftertaste takes away from the experience.

This is the 2009 version, a beautiful can of beer purchased from a beer/wine/sake shop in a lower level of Tokyo station. The can states "This limited version of Yebisu beer has been given longer lagering time for rich, mellow flavor and satisfying smoothness". The beer pours clear with a deep copper color and a huge pillowy head, it took several pauses to fill the pint glass without spilling foam. The aroma is sweet and malty, no noticeable hops (maybe from long lagering time?). The taste is rich with malty sweetness, a little toasty, again no hops detected. Actually a little more hops would help to counter the sweetness, this is on the edge of cloying but doesn't quite go overboard. Thick mouthfeel and easy drinking except for the sweetness.

What the hell is wrong here? This is a malty, juicey caramelly lovely beer, yet it is brewed by a Japanese macro.
Appearance: Beautiful transparent amber, pure white head with moderately stubborn white lacing.
Aroma: Huge caramely aroma. Ok, not that huge, but crazy amounts for a Japanese lager.
Taste: Ripe, bursting at the seams maltyness. Decent bitterness. Bready finish.
Smooth, yummy long lasting flavor.
