On tap at the brewpub 1/4/12
Appearance: Inky black with a small tan head
Nose: Smells like nothing else. Acetic vinegar, tart lemon and grape from the red wine balanced by rich, dark chocolate and a hint of smoke.
Taste: Really different and interesting. Sour hits first with lemon juice and ripe apple, a hint of vinegar, followed by a deep sweet chocolate and vanilla undertone. Finishes with a hint of spicy oak.
Mouthfeel: Probably the creamiest, fullest feeling barrel-fermented beer I've had.
Overall: Really original and enticing beer from Tired Hands. Really unlike anything else I've tasted and definitely successful. The top brew on tap when I visited, although everything I tried was impressive.

Growler shared by Tom. Served in a snifter.
A - Quick-dissolving tan foam settles to a thin collar, spotty lacing. Near black body.
S - Odd savory BBQ flavor to this, with a mix of chocolate and caramel malts, mild vinous flavor, hint of rye, and some musky funk. Reminds me a bit of some Flanders beers I've had, with the mix of sweet malt and acetic, vinegary notes.
T - Dry, roasty, and lightly charry texture. Seems a bit oxidized too, but it may just have too much black malt for my tastes. There's perhaps a faint touch of rye and the majority of the wild and barrel characteristics have largely vanished.
M - Medium body, a tad chewy, with lower carbonation and a dry finish. No alcohol, which I suppose is a plus.
D - Not very good. It seems like virtually everything I have from this brewery is middling to terrible. Is this a function of their infamous growler filling issues or do I just 'luck' into getting all the bad beers the make?

Thanks to Orangesol for sharing this 1-liter growler at our last gathering. This pours a dark brown with a still penline of a couple bubbles for a head. Faint traces of spots collect atop and stick to the glass when swirled. Some light brown clarity is seen around the edges.
The aroma is quite tangy with fruity character. It is vinous with funk and chocolate malt mixing things up. For the most part this is strange and doesnt mesh that well but it isnt bad.
The taste includes plenty of cocoa and hints of coffee. Some tangy vinous notes emerge possibly from the combination of the barrel aging and wild bugs. A big herbal hop bitterness is found across the finish which clashes a bit with earth and alcohol. As it warms up, it gets a little dusty feeling.
This is a medium bodied brew with too light a level of carbonation. Just a little bit of effervescence would have gone a long way to help blend and move the flavors across the tongue. Overall a prett decent and unique mix of character. If the bitternesd was tamed back a bit this would be superb.

Growler to Woodshop snifter
1l
Thanks to Todd for sharing at Steve's house
App- It looked to me like the color of a brown growler just in liquid form. Catches the light well and has some good density behind it. For a saison a bit light on the bubbles and cling. Lighter edges as well. Get the color from the black wheat.
Smell- This has a lot going on in the aromatics department. A huge amount of wheat and rye but then it was tempered by the barley wine barrels and get abit of the tannic notes as well from the wine.
Taste- This was unique and tasty. A nice saison per se for the style but still has its own unique character from the ingredients. The addition of the rye adds a bit of spice and the barrel treatment added a depth of oak and wood behind the wine notes.
Mouth- Hits the mark one the feel. A solid medium body with a medium carbonation. More barrel notes come out as it warmed and was residual of the barleywine malts.
Drink- I enjoyed this beer. Different and layered. I might have to trade for a couple of their beers in the future.

1L growler, 1/10/13
Wine glass
A: Pours a really drop brown, nearly black. Head is a fluffy light tan color. About a quarter finger. Leaves some lacing bits.
S: Smells of tartness. Vinous notes more than a bourbon barrel aging. Mostly Saison like funk, and chocolate cocoa. Some roast.
T: Taste follows the nose. Much like Funk Metal. This is more like a funky stout. Getting loads of chocolate and that tart funky back drop. Dry finish. Some lingering cocoa flavors.
M: It's a big medium actually which surprised me.
