Ashley's is my favorite bar in Ann Arbor. Amazing tap and bottle selection and surprisingly good food. Atmosphere is quite nice with a comfortable interior, and older clientele. Memorable experiences I have had there are having Harry magills spiced stout on-tap on a day when they had something like 20 bells beers on tap. Having my first russian imperial stout, Old Rasputin, on-tap. There are too many great beers that I have had on tap to name. In terms of food, their waffle fries are the ultimate in late night bar food. Only complaint would be staff that sometimes has very little clue about what they are serving.

Well there isn't too much to say about Ashley's that hasn't been said already. Beer selection, particularly tap, is very good. They have 3 beers on cask, include 90-minute. I've had Founder's KBS, Goose Island Imperial IPA (underrated!), and other great beers on tap here as their rotating selection is ever-changing and excellent.
Main issue with Ashley's (besides crazy crowds essentially every day) is the service. I understand it gets ridiculous in there but I can't believe that they aren't able to just throw in a few more waitstaff sometimes to get things running more smoothly.
A perfect place to have dinner and great beer on a weekday at 5pm.

Stopped in here on my way to Founders. Great place on one of the greatest campuses there is around. Smack in the middle of the University of Michigan's campus. Great list of tap beers. I went straight for the Short's offerings, then went with a Dark Horse Crooked Tree. The food was solid, but the place can get pretty crowded as you can imagine from it being on a college campus.
Plenty of great beers on tap and a great environment, locale. What else can you ask for in a beer bar?
I'll stop here whenever I'm anywhere near the place.

Ashley's is a cool little bar on State, right in the heart of Ann Arbor. Seems like there's a nice mix of students, locals, and average joes.
I went in on a nice spring afternoon... sat at the bar and immediately spotted the beers I wanted to try on the chalk board. A quick glance over their taps definitely lets you know this place is all business. Stone, Shorts, Bells, Founders, Chimay, Goose Island, and Jolly Pumpkin were all well represented.
I was greeted quickly and after having a sample and perusing the menu, I went with a lunch special. $10 total got me a PINT of Goose Island Imperial IPA, and a nice 1/2 turkey wrap and a cup of white bean chicken chili. A well-known regular was an awesome conversationalist, and made my time there that much more fun. I managed to get samples of Perseguidor, Goose Island IIPA and Night Stalker.
I have absolutely no complaints about Ashley's, and I honestly can't wait to make it out there again. This place is a real gem, especially on a beautiful afternoon.

I've been going to Ashely's for about a year a now, and I've yet to find a better bar anywhere. The amount of beer is staggering, and they are all excellent brews. I think the most low-brow beer they serve is Labatt's Blue Light, which I'm sure is only on the menu for people unfamiliar with craft beer. They have everything from local micro brews (Bell's, Jolly Pumpkin, Founders, etc), to Trappist ales. They also have an excellent selection of Scotch.
The service is generally very good, I have only ever had a problem once, and even then, it wasn't a big deal. It can get a little loud, I wish they would lose the jukebox, and sometimes people can be noisy, but never out of control. Its not that kind of bar. The food is solid, nothing out of this world. The interior is just dark enough, with great brick walls, nice tables, and beer signs all over.
All in all, this is a great place. It is where I began my beer education and it is where I continue it to this day. When I graduate from Michigan, Ashley's will one of the places I miss the most.

great place. attractive and usually packed.
the quality of Ashley's is wonderful. good people, great selection of beer with a good menu that has accurate descriptions of each beer choice. i don't think they have PBR, which is too bad, but i wouldn't order it anyway.
the service is good. friendly staff, and are pretty well on the ball.
the selection of beer at this bar is the best in A2. some 60 beers to choose from and a number of rotating taps that amount to anywhere from 10-15, and rotating bottles.
The food is delicious, which is just icing on the cake.
check it out, it won't disappoint.

I used to go here all the time during my college years. This place started cultivating my interest in domestic craft brews and Belgian beers, and is a wonderful introduction for college students at the University of Michigan to expand their horizons beyond Natty Light or Busch.
The atmosphere of this place is wonderful; it really has the whole thriving college brewpub feel to it. The place comes alive with its clientele and community-like interaction. The selection is exquisite: more Bell's (and other local midwest brewers) on tap than you can count, wonderful bottled Belgians, fresh English ales. The food is pretty good pub fare but that's not why you're here, is it? The servers are always good to suggest a great beer catered to your taste, even if you aren't a beer drinker. I've brought so many people here before and none of them have ever had a bad time. Overall, highly recommended if you're on a trip to Ann Arbor.

I visted Ashley's while I was on a business trip to Ann Arbor.
Aside from being COMPLETELY blown away by their selction on tap they came at you with a full list of bottled beers. Living in the Southwest there was an insane amount of beer that I have wanted to try in a bottle, but to have the ability to have it on tap was that much sweeter. I never thought I would see some Founder's Breakfeast Stout on tap :)
Their service was great the waitress was right on top of our glasses whenever they were empty. My two traveling mates got food there and I tried a little and it was pretty tasty....But not as tasty as the beer was!
I will definately be going back to visit when I am in the state again--Hopefully I can bring more people with to share in an awesome experience.

Ashley's Pub is right in Downtown Ann Arbor, across the street from the University. The atmosphere inside is fairly laid back, with wood being fairly ubiquitous, and an ambiance of amiable comradery. the bar is straight ahead as one enters, with seating on the streetside and a dining room in back. the bar area is nicely open, to show off the sixty-plus taps available.
quality is decent. with this many taps, one must question how often the lines get cleaned, especially when most of them are permanent taps. this BA stuck to the rotating taps, to be sure that they were fresh. One hand pump cask was available, which was quite good. the service was lacking quite a bit. the bartender would disappear for minutes at a time doing something in the back, leaving those at the bar without service, usually when it was needed most.
selection was great. a good variety of food offerings with sixty-plus taps. impressive while considering the context. food was good. the BBQ pork wings were good, albeit a bit dry.
overall, this is a solid stop for those in and passing by Ann Arbor. its location in proximity to the University is quite nice, and the offerings for beer are notable. cheers!

I'm actually a bit mixed on the atmosphere here. The smoke was bad in the place, almost like half the bar was smoking. The food was okay, I got a burger that was decent, and about what you'd expect from a bar, nothing fancy or really great. When I showed up on a Friday afternoon around noon the bartender was the manager, whom didn't even drink, therefore knew nothing of the selection of beers, styles or anything. I got a Michigan sampler to start, which took her about 4-5 minutes to find all the taps (with the help of a local) and fill the 4 ounce tasters. After about an hour of this the normal bartender showed up from moving kegs around in the cooler. The service bumped up a notch after that. Fuzzy on his name at this point but I stayed until his shift ended. Met lots of students and interesting people. The selection was a bit middle of the road for me on this visit, which I'm sure isn't really the standard based on the other reviews. There were lots of mediocre labels or starter beers, and no American macros, mostly euro or British macros, which makes me think I just happened to come at a bad time. Most of the interesting bottles I wanted they were out of. Everything I had tasted fine and of the quality I expected. I'd go back and likely have a good time, and raise the rating of the review.
