Style | ABV
American Double / Imperial Stout |  11.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (11), on-tap (2)

Notes:
Much like the "sweet light crude oil" from the eastern plains of Colorado- this beer pours a deep black with a tantalizing off-white head. Aromatics of sweet malt and bourbon envelope the nose like the sunset of the eastern plains. The malt profile continues through the palate from beginning to end with subtle hints of chocolate, coffee, and of course bourbon. This is a true beer for the malt and bourbon lovers alike.

Had this on tap at Elevation Beer Co. tasting room.

A: Dark black, no light penetrance.

S: Coffee, and lots of it! Dark chocolate, dark fruits and a hint of bourbon.

T: Follows the smell. Big coffee tastes up front mixed with dark chocolate and fruit. Coffee taste is present throughout but the bourbon/alcohol warmth comes in the finish.

M: Heavy and fairly creamy.

O: One of the best beers that I have tried from Elevation. Great mixing of a typical Imperial stout with a coffee stout. Loved it!

Thanks to blakelive784 for this bottle as part of an excellent trade a few weeks back. Always good to try another new brewery, especially one from my second favorite state. Big, tall, imposing 750ML bomber, split with my wife. Bottle #287.

Nice minimalistic bottle art. Cork gives way reluctantly to reveal a dark black beer that foams when I look at it cross-eyed. Really. A hard pour brings head, which falls, then I pick the glass up to check it out, & it zooms right back. Nice trick. Nose is more like a straight stout, roast, cocoa. Maybe a thread of vanilla, but no bourbon is detected by my bourbon-o-meter.

Oil Man taste like no big stout I've ever had; maybe an American Double/Imperial Fruit Stout? There's a ton of flash-dried fruit right up-front, as if somebody dropped their trail mix, sans peanuts, into the mash tun. OK, so I peeked - someone said cantaloupe, & that's exactly right. Bare-bones roast in the middle, vanilla peeking out from under, but barely detectable. No bourbon. Over-carbonated for a big stout, & gotta be honest, I'm not even wild about finishing my half of the bomber.

Disappointing. I'm not going to say that word, but inappropriate carbonation, bourbon faded to nothing, fruitiness...well, I'm one hundred percent sure this isn't what the brewer intended. Scraping the heel of mediocre.

Served in a Local Option cervoise.

Bottle #02022. I just can't keep my mind from flashing to There Will Be Blood-style wastelands... Anyway, this stuff pours a straight obsidian topped by a half-finger or so of dark tan foam. The nose elicits the image of a pate of brownies carousing within a bourbon barrel, with a bit of roasted malts, coffee, oak, and pretzel tossed in for good measure. The taste brings in more of the same, with a good amount of the physical barrel itself shining through, including a hint of the metal rings in the hazy distance. The body is a lithe medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a thinly fluid feel. Overall, a tasty barrel-aged stout, though one whose overt barrel influence and relatively thin body hinder its advances toward greatness.

Bottle pour at the bottle share held at Chloe's inside Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Bottle # 00772. Bottled Winter 2012.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with a slight smoke flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a solid barred aged presence.

Bottle 01938, bottled Winter 2012.

A: Pours pitch black with a huge and dense dark brown head. Fades slowly, leaving moderate specks of lacing behind. Decent retention though.

S: Hmph. Lots of chocolate. Kind of an odd aroma, can't quite place it. A touch of bourbon in there with some caramel maybe, but not much.

T: A little bourbon up front, heavy on the toffee. Some chocolate mixes in with bunch of anise. Again, a strange flavor to go with the strange aroma previously mentioned. I looked back through the reviews and I saw mention of melon rind. Yes, that's pretty close. It has almost a cantaloupe type flavor mixing in with everything. Espresso flavors in the finish with lingering coffee beans and oak in the aftertaste. Alcohol very well hidden, no noticeable taste but nice belly-warming sensation betrays it.

M: Pretty heavy but surprisingly smooth. Viscous.

O: Huh, not a bad bourbon barrel stout. Very non-standard, especially with that "melon" flavor in there. Unique, but I can't quite tell if it's amazing or if it reeks of off-flavors or brewing flaws. I'm a little torn on this one. Bourbon isn't very strong in this one like a BCBS or something but it does add a noticeable and appreciated layer of complexity. Overall a good beer but I couldn't quite get over the odd flavor combinations (which I feel MAY have been the beginnings of infected flavors) to give it really high scores.

This is a great imperial stout. This is my first beer from Elevation and I am looking forward to the other one I have ( APIS IV). It pours black with a thin head. Smells a bit like bourbon and not much else. The mouth feel is a bit thin...but the taste....wow. incredibly smooth. Nice malty flavor, but not too sweet. The bourbon flavor is there, but not over the top. The high alcohol content is also hidden quite well.

This a very drinkable beer. I could knock back another one, right now. If it wasn't for the price and high alcohol this could be a session beer.
