Historically the term used to describe a porter blended from a variety of ales, entire butt uses 14 different malts and 3 hops to recreate this forgotten style of porter. The beer is black/brown with a crisp white head and is distinctly vinuous. It has little hop character as essentially the flavour is derived from the malts. Malts used: pale Maris Otter, lager, wheat, pale crystal, dark crystal, dark chocolate, pale chocolate, black, roasted barley, caramalt, torrified wheat, amber malt, brown malt and malted oats.

A: Black, appears to be carbonated, and has a decent sized head, but leaves rather quickly.

S: Has a fruity malty smell with a hint of a roasty smell.

T: It has a bit of a bite from the carbonation. The first thing that comes out is the roasted barley taste. I can't taste any hops in the beer either. There is a sweet creamy chocolate flavour that comes after you at the end.

M: The beer is a bit watery at first, but it's creaminess kind of stick around in your mouth until you swallow.

D: A quite strong/different flavour so not too drinkable.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear very dark cola brown approaching jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate dark chestnut brown + medium brown + ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy soapy foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering a little more than 90% of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of slightly charred/burnt + roasty + dark + chocolate + caramel + nutty malts with a light amount of caramel + molasses sweetness. Hints of earthy hops. Also light to moderate aromas of leather + tobacco.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of slightly charred/burnt + roasty + dark + chocolate + caramel + nutty malts with a light amount of caramel + molasses sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of leather + tobacco. Finally there are very light flavors of earthy hops. Light amounts of roasty bitterness that lingers well into the finish.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a light mouthfeel. Lots of malt complexity makes this beer enjoyable both in aroma and flavor. Definitely an interesting combination of malts.

Bottle to English pint glass.
The appearance had a brown pour but ended up leaving more of a dark brown/almost black color. Quickly dissipating small eggshell white foamy head. Just some wispy lace.
The aroma had sweet coffee, figs, raisins, cocoa powder, chocolate malt balls, baker's chocolate and some dark toast.
The flavor leaned towards a sweet dry raisin and fig character. Cocoa powder and sweet coffee notes slide in to add a touch of bitterness. Definitely has a coffee sweet aftertaste with some figs and raisins.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping to sessionable quality about it. Good carbonation with a very nice smoothness. Finishes fairly smooth with crisp wafer/malt balls and some cocoa powder.
Overall, I'd say a pretty nicely done English porter I'd have again.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: rich, dark brown with a clear body and ruby highlights. There's a finger of frothy dark-tan foam atop; it's quite attractive in my book.

Smell: very sweet, almost molasses-ey, with that same sour tang that molasses has. It almost has a bit of a cola or kvass aroma to it as well; I really like it.

Taste: roasty malt, molasses, bread; there's a little bit of raisin thrown in along with some tobacco. It tastes like the richest kvass I've ever had. What an interesting beer!

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent level of carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: I really like this beer; although it has a combination of roasty finish and up-front sweetness that work at odds initially, the combination is really making me want another sip. Fascinating stuff!

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted caramel malt, molasses, brown bread, nuts and a little lactose. Flavor of dark toasted malt, light caramel, brown bread, light molasses, vanilla and light coffee. Flavor tapers off quite a bit into a semi-dry toasted malt and cocoa finish. Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. This is a great smelling porter with fine initial complexity. The 15 varieties of malt used add very interesting combinations of flavors. The flavor sadly dissipates in the finish, although the light residual flavor is nice. This was a porter that I found myself wishing was a little bigger and robust to get the full effect of the great malt mixture. Still plenty going on here; a very good light porter with interesting malt character.

Poured from 11.2-ounce bottle into nonic pint. Unsurpassed in appearance. Deep brown color with some ruby highlights. Aggressive pour yielded almost half a glass of thick, sticky light tan foam that left tons of lacing. Salopian boasts 14 malts in this brew, providing a complex flavor profile with notes of toffee, caramel, molasses, cocoa, coffee bean, and dark fruit. Even with all of that, it does not assault the palate. The mouthfeel is medium, and the finish is dry. There is a hint of burnt coffee bitterness on the aftertaste without any lingering sweetness. Salopian has done a masterful job of bringing the "three threads" together with this awesome brew.

$ 5.82/16.9 oz bottle (Including tax) ($ 0.308/oz) from the Lager Mill, Frankenmuth, MI
BB F15 021 at 50o into a hand washed and dried JK snifter (I’m not ordering a glass from South Africa from which to drink it!)
Aroma – fairly weak roast malt, a little chocolatey; doesn’t last
Head – light brown, fizzy: like Nicolas Cage, gone in sixty seconds
Lacing - none
Body – dark brown with a red tint, clear but so dark as to be opaque, slight effervescence, some sediment in bottle
Flavor – light sweetness, a little roast malt, a hint of chocolate; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate – medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation

An excellent example of an English Brown Porter, perhaps a little lacking in the hops department, but still excellent. Definitely something worth buying a case or two, although the lack of head and lacing do bother me slightly.

Appearance 3, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.75, Palate 4.5, Overall 4.5

330 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/24/2014. Pours crystal clear deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, brown sugar, molasses, toasted brown bread, light coffee/nuttiness, plum, apple, herbal, wood, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, brown sugar, molasses, toasted brown bread, light coffee/nuttiness, plum, apple, herbal, wood, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, milk chocolate, cocoa, toasted brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/grainy, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero alcohol warming as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a very nice English porter style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
