A: A very hazy light yellow. Very cloudy. About half a finger of head. Looks like a very unfiltered wit.

S: Great tart smell, a bit of sweetness and funk mixed in. Lemon, lemongrass, wheat, a hint of wet hay.

T: Great tart taste that follows the nose. Nice wheat malt backbone. Smooth, crisp, lemon tart. Good acidity.

M: Effervescent, smooth, easy drinking. Really well carbed.

O: A solid representation of the style. Nice sour notes, good lemongrass and wheat backbone taste. Just a really well done Berlinerweisse. So glad to see more US breweries venturing into this style, and Pipeworks have been pumping out some good ones. I suggest picking this up as an intro into sours.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Batch # 74.

Pours a murky light yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with malt, grain, and slight fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with sour grain flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a better taste over smell in my opinion.

(Served in a tulip
Batch #74
A- This beer ours a pale white peach color with a bit of hazy and a creamy snow white head that turns bubble. There is a sea of microbubbles racing to the surface. The second class is much hazier with a massive jetsam that looks like wet paper towels floating around. The second class was too slimy and chunky to drink.

S- The fruity tart note was mellow but bright and took on a nice dry honeycomb note as it opened up. There was a faint wheat dough hint to it aswell.

T- The nice tart crisp presents lead to a softer fruity tartness in the finish with a field corn note in the dry finish. There was a gentle hint of tartness lingering for a moment.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has no astringency at all with a gentle tight fizz scrubbing the finish.

O- This is a nice tart beer but is much softer than it’s Cousins from Berlinne. It has some nice flavor but I’m not sure a 3.4% ABV bomber is worth $10.00. It was also frustrating that I couldn’t even drink the second glass.

Something different fof Pipeworks, Americo’s bottle. Great hoppy aroma. A creamy head on dark brown. Some chocolate, roasty taste with citrus in the finish. Was expecting more significant sourness in the style.I can only speculate that they purposely concentrated on these other elements.

750ml bottle
Batch 99, 3/12/13
Lost Abbey tulip

A: Pours a really hazy, cloudy faded yellow color. Bright white head of fizzy bubbles. Initially a half finger then just a nice collar.

S: Smells slightly tart. Wheat. Some Lacto like yogurt character. Mild funk.

T: Tartness on the tip of the tongue. Prickly carbonation. In the middle of the mouth you get that wheat and grainy character. Sort of one note. Some creamy notes from the Lacto bugs. Finish is crisp and refreshing.

M: Light to medium bodied.

O: It's ok. The fruited one is better.

thanks to egrace for the share.

poured into tulip glass.

reviewed from notes taken 4/5/2013.

Appearance: opaque straw yellow bodied beer with 3 fingers of white head. spotty lacing.

Smell: This beer smells pretty cheesy like a good blue cheese. Thats most of what I am smelling from this beer.

Taste: Mildly tart lemons. light wheat malt profile. Hint of blue cheese in the middle of the brew and more lemons overtake the cheese in the finish of the beer. The beer finishes with the same mild tartness that it started with. Simple yet enjoyable.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Fresh, light, bright and drinkable beer. Clean finish as well.

Overall: This is another great Berlinner Weissbier by Pipeworks. I like it more than blue lady, but its just not near as good as well red temptress. Great to see a brewery in Illinois brewing this beer style and trying different spins on a berlinner especially since you just dont see that many berlinner's on the shelfs in craft beer stores.

750 mL bottle poured into a wheat beer glass

The beer pours a beautiful cloudy lemon color. There is a nice bright white head as well that releases a complex scent. You certainly get the tartness on the nose as well as some light citrus and bread notes. My wife described the scent as the smell of summer.

This beer is very interesting as basically a naked Berliner. The tartness attacks your tongue, then some sweetness and bright flavors surround. It's very light and appealing for warm weather. If this is your style, then it should satisfy. If this isn't, then this would be a solid version to try and see if you can develop a taste for it.
