Poured from bottle into a tulip. Pours a hazy orange/gold color with a foamy head.

Deep and pungent aromas of hops, navel oranges, Meyer lemons, some malts, a touch of caramel, and a variety of spices.

Med/full bodied with a really nice feel. Well balanced and complete with spices, navel oranges, hops and some caramel as well and some pine resin on the back end.

This is fantastic. Real good depth on both the aromas and flavors.

22 oz bomber, batch number 37, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a hazy yellow hay color into the glass, with, in my batch, a lot (three fingers) of dense tight white foam that slowly drops into the beer, leaving a patchwork of sea foam style lacing.

S- A muted hop signature, but pleasing. A little orange in the citrus aroma.

T- Strong, earthy hop signature when the brew hits the tongue, lots of bitterness as it rolls back torward the tongue. Some bread and astringency in the aftertaste. Lots of carbonation, but not unpleasant.

M- Medium body, I get a lot of hop oils on the tongue.

O- An interesting and worthwhile beer from a new brewer in Chicago.

A - Pours a hazy orange with a brownish-amber tint. Small, white head.

S - Quite malty, honey like. Biscuits, light hops, citrusy and zest. A scent of grape win as well.

T - initially very sweet. The grape wine taste is fairly strong. Hops are there, but in the background. It's a very interesting mix. I like it.

M - clean and crisp

Overall - I liked this one,and I admire the difficulty of this style. It seemed like it was lacking something though.

22oz, Batch #83 1/7/13
Riedel unmarked tulip

A: Cloudy dark yellow/orange like color. About a half finger of loose bubbles bright white head. Nice carbonation with tiny bubbles streaming up sides of the glass. Some lacing sheeting.

S: Definitely getting those Nelson hops, that white grape like wine-ish scent. Not getting the coriander but certainly some citrus and orange peel. Not much malt character.

T: Tip of the tongue, you get those Nelson hops and some pine like bitterness too. That white grape is certainly evident. You do get a touch of a spice bill that wasn't as pronounced on the nose, so maybe that coriander. That citrus sweetness comes through as well. Close is crisp and light and somewhat dry. Nice summer brew for sure.

M: It's a light medium, because of the nice carbonation.

look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: Pours a golden caramel with a couple orange hues…it’s a very creamy, dense caramel color…not transparent at all…a nice off white head formed and settles to a thinner layer…but when I swirl it a bit, it thickens right back up…a very inviting brew…(4.25/5)

Smell: Wow, that is very light and fresh and mouth watering…I’m getting mango, pineapple, kumquat (!!!), tangerine, mandarin…tropical without being flowery…just a hint of pepper bite…some pale/sweet/light caramel malts in the back rounding things off…it’s refreshing and flavorful without being pungent…again, very inviting…(4.35/5)

Taste: Starts very muted, nothing really explodes onto the tongue right away…the flavor definitely builds, it’s actually a bit watery at first and really only catches flight in the after taste…flavor-wise though, I get pale/light/caramel malts up front…it’s very soft and really hits the front of my tongue…the front of my mouth is watering…after I swallow the first sip, I get a strong citrus (orange/pineapple)/piney resin bite that covers my tongue in the back…two very distinct flavors and reactions happening in my mouth – light, sweet and wet caramel malt in the front and zesty, mildly bitter citrus/piney hops in the back…the citrus/piney hops taste fresh, zesty and slightly robust…it’s a great taste that lingers well into the after after taste…one good drink lasts a few minutes…(4.4/5)

Mouthfeel: Light body, light to medium carbonation…it does fluff up a bit bringing citrus (lemon/orange/pineapple) bitterness and zest to the party…it’s almost watery but has an undeniable chewiness to it that saves it from despair…citrus/piney bitterness lingers well into the after taste leaving a wonderful flavor to chew on…(4/5)

Overall: This is a good brew, definitely worth the price tag, $8.99 for a bomber…west coast APA and IPA influenced, there’s tons of citrus/piney/resinous hop flavor to satisfy any hop heads’ hop craving…the texture of this brew is kinda weird and is really the only downside…it’s almost like drinking a black and tan with it’s contrast of light and robust all in one sip…very drinkable, buying a couple of these from the Binny’s in Lakeview and dragging them over to your local bro-fest is a great idea…Pipeworks is a newish beer company from Chicago that is growing in regional/national notoriety for producing solid brews and with good measure…this being my first toe dip into their waters, I can say that at least a clue to what a good brew should do…highly recommended! 1st offering of Pipeworks.
GI Tulip

A: pours a murky light orange almost yellowish body, with an absolutely massive 3 fingers worth of head formation (yet this was a somewhat aggressive pour). definitely did not expect there to be so much head formation. nice lacing... and I love the artwork on the bottle!

S: very nice complexity... i get a huge rush of tropical fruits such as pineapple a slight pear, lemon zest and orange peel and some apricot. there is also a slight biscuit and bready presence in the background. a touch of honey.

T: when comparing this to the smell, i find it rather lacking. there is a big bready backbone, hop bitterness, mellowed out tropical fruits (none of which really make an established presence in my opinion), and a slight spiciness.

M: on the lighter side of medium bodied brew. leaves a piney hop bitterness on the palate that creates a bit of salivation. moderate carbonation.

O: i personally found the taste to be lacking in this one. but with this being my first offering by Pipeworks, I'm not disappointed by any means. And will definitely try to "tick" away at their offereings!
