I went in recently and it appears they are under new ownership (I guess my brother-in-law said it might be the employee that basically ran the store for the old owners?). The store was pretty much a mess because the new owner was reorganizing everything. He seemed like an EXCEPTIONALLY helpful guy and very knowledgeable. While I was in the store, someone brought in a bottle of their homebrew and asked him for some help making it better. The owner could decipher the ingredients just from a few sips (I can tell you used American ale yeast, you finished with Simcoe, etc). He offered some great advice to the customer and congratulated him on making a very drinkable beer. The customer let me try some and I agreed with 100% of the advice that the owner gave him.
I really like what's going on with the store. The prices are reasonable and the service is more helpful than any homebrew store I have ever been in, by far. I will definitely stop in the next time I am down near Hartford to see how the re-organizing went.

I bough my starter kit from here about a year ago. Their stock was quite low for just about everything. I had maybe two choices for my first extract kit, and didn't get a needed capper. I waited for it and then had to buy it elsewhere.
Since then this store has made a nice turnaround. The service is good, the shelves are now well stocked. I came in with a sample and was met with another sample to try, good stuff all-round. I purchased some soda flavoring and received some feedback on my brew. Check it out and start home brewing.

This has been my go to homebrew shop, mostly because of Rich and Dennis. I've never had such good customer service, to the point where I feel like I'm visiting an old friend when I walk in there.
They are a tiny shop, rough around the edges, and tucked away behind some buildings. The selection on the floor is more geared towards wine, but the beer inventory flys off the shelf. The turnover here is great, yeast is always fresh, and if it isn't, they take it off the shelf. They litteraly have sold things off the shipping palattes because they didn't have time to stock the shelves with it.
Rich and Dennis know their stuff, and are possibly the only non-condesending LHBS owners in CT (and maybe even MA). They make the experience, and are more than willing to take time with you to answer questions. Do give them a break though, it gets busy in there, and they do their best to get to everyone. The fact that it's so busy is an indicator of how good their service is.

Never been to another homebrew store, so I'm not sure if I'm qualified to review...but I like this place so much I have no reason to go somewhere else. Small place with all the equipment, ingredients, books, and even great glassware.
Service is great. Rich is very helpful and will always give tips and help with making recipes. Very willing to talk to you on the phone if you have any questions. I've been in there for pretty long periods of time talking about homebrewing, he has taught be a lot.
Overall, I have to recommend this place. Good prices, great staff, and great selection on ingredients and equipment. I've never been to any store of any kind where the staff was as helpful as they are here.

I went to Brew & Wine Hobby after reading a couple good reviews after the change of managment. I walked in the store and met Rich who was very willing to help me with my questions and needs for my all grain dry stout.
The store is a bit messy in the back but Rich said it was because they were turning an old employee only part of the store into a place for customers to borwse specialty grains.
I wasn't buying much at this visit but I can say that I did save a good amount of money!
I have been going to Maltose for my grains/hops/yeast. and don't get me wrong I love the place but Brew & Wine Hobby is closer to me, and so far, cheaper. It has a good selection and great service. So I will be making many stops back to Brew & Wine Hobby.
I visited again and Rich game me some White Labs yeast that was past its date. I made a starter and the suff came alive no problem! I love saving money, and I love this place!

Updated Review 8/11/2008
I feel that this place deserves a new review do the change in ownership.
The old guy was nice but the new guys are great! Rich is a super friendly guy who know a ton about home brewing beer and is eager to offer advise and suggestions.
THEY CRUSH GRAINS NOW!
They will take a little $$ off your order if you call ahead of time
I was getting my yeast and hops from here because they are the freshest, but now that they are crushing grains they will get all of my business!
I stop by this place once and a while to pick up some odds and ends. The place is small and very cramped. They have tons of equipment in here you just have to take some time to look through all of the clutter.
The staff in very friendly but are wine makers so their beer knowledge is limited, you really have to know what you want and need before walking in there.
Lots of malts and beer kits. Grains in the back (they won't crush). Lots of wine stuff, they do have some really nice brew pots that are a bit expensive.
I have a feeling that there are some buried treasures in here under all of the mess.

I just bought my first set up from here and it seemed like a great place. A bit of an odd location, but if you're going there you've probably had to look it up anyways. The staff was extremely friendly and helped me pick out what I needed and threw in a ton of extras for me as well. The guy even gave me extra malt for free because he thought it'd make my recipe better. They kept the store open for me for about half an hour after they closed telling me tips and just talking about beer. I was impressed with how they were and I definitely plan on getting my future supplies from here.
Edit: I don't know why I had this place as very expensive...it's not.

I have been in here a few times over the years. I was in this past weekend and the shop has changed hands. If you have been in there in the past you will notice how neat this shop has become. I spoke to Rich who was very helpful. I mentioned that I had been buying my ingredients / equipment online but will start spending my money here. In the next few weeks they will begin grinding malts for recipes which is a good thing, so I can get my hands on my ingredients faster!
I had no issues with the last owner, just nice to see that this is a positive turnover to new owners and look forward to doing business with them.

I've been in and out of this shop many times over the last few years. Always was able to get what I wanted and usually had the stuff I needed in stock. Kits are always fresh, he goes through them quickly but will hold what you want aside so you don't waste a trip. My last trip was a quick stop in to pick up some washers for my corny keg setup. The prices here have always been very reasonable and right on market value. The owner mainly makes wine and not beer but he does have a good grasp of style types and has a very good understanding of brewing beer. Personally I would call ahead if you are looking to pick up a specific style kit as they sell quickly. I visited one day and he had just put the kits he got in on the shelves, I think I counted 6 IPA kits and within a week between visits all the IPA kits were gone as well as most of his other kits.

This place is great. Larry Snyder is very knowledgable and always helps me out with whatever I want to make. In this shop, you can find kegs, malts, hops, grains, bottles, even label makers for your homebrew. I walked into this shop originally to buy a still. He helped me find exactly what I needed and was very friendly. I later wanted to start making my own beer, and Larry helped me to his full extent. This is the only place I will take my business to because of the friendly staff... and the convenient location.
