I woke early one morning in the town of Charleroito grab my bus down to Brasserie d' Orval. Located just a couple hundred feet up the road from the brewery and set in the same wonderful little valley is the Angel. Even though this spot is located at the far end of Belgium, you simply must go if for no other reason than turning the corner into this valley.
The Angel is an old fashioned traveller's inn with a close tie to the Abbey. (In fact according to John White it used to be a court house run by the Abbot and a guest house for women before they could sleep in the Abbey's guest house)
The beer choice is simple, Orval and Petite Orval. Both are excellent as are the Vintage Orvals available.
Food is simple rustic fare, almost every last scrap of it involving the breweries cheese, bread or brew.
A pleasant and hearty stop for the traveller.

We were all still tingling after our trip around the stunningly beautiful & relatively unspoilt, Brasserie dOrval at Easter 1997. Armed with many bags full of the simply gorgeous home-made Bread, Cheese and even some Beer, from the Abbey Shop, we all rambled down the road that leads to the Orval Abbey. For after our holy encounter, what better place to have lunch then the very appropriately named Guardian Angel only a 3 minute walk from the Abbey.
A lovely large roadside building, comprised of two large rooms, with the bar, kind of in between them. There is a Beer Veranda, but it was bloody freezing & had been raining recently so we all headed inside for some warmth. Our party of 30 were comfortably seated indoors. Food was absolutely top notch, great selection, good sized portions, wholesome and very tasty. Not much point looking at the Beer Menu, it only had the one beer now which one was it? .er, nope, I forget ;-))
Well actually thats not strictly true. For a start, I remember distinctly that Orval of various ages (vintages) was on Sale here. Also, and if you ask politely, you may very well be allowed to sample the Petite Orval (4%) as the Staff verbally referred to it then (I note now that other names are attributable to this beer). It is the beer that is drunk by the Brothers anyways, for it is a more palatable strength for daily consumption. On our visit (1997), it was not advertised as for sale, and I believe that the arrangement to sell the Brothers Beer had not been in place very long. Now it may well be advertised, and common place. Other BAs, who have been more recently, may well like to elaborate on this in future BeerFlys for it is a very accomplished impressive beer in its own right.
As close to an Orval Brewery tap as you will get .
.and THE place, to do a Vertical tasting of the Vintages, that may well leave you Horizontal if you are not careful !!!!!
