I finally made it to U Fleko on a recent trip and wasn't disapointed.
Probably the most expensive glass of beer you'll find in Prague but worth it.
Very sweet in taste and almost black in color this is a beer that merits a special trip if your ever near the pub.
The best dark beer in CZ to be sure.

Growler, at the time of this review, this is the #1 Euro Dark lager, which is a bullshit style btw, on the best of beeradvocate lists. Imagine my surprise when Thorpe429 told me he had a growler of this previously believed to be DONG from the Czech republic, one of my top wants for a while, served in a Bruery tulip.
Beer is brown, dark, hazy with a thin head of small and medium bubbles, minimal lacing (if any at all) and low carbonation.
Aroma is nutty, sweet, the nuts dominate and win though.
Beer is tart and dark, mildly dry finish, you know what I think it is? Brett o. I thought about this review and description for a couple of hours and this is what I landed on. I think this beer is made or finished with Brett o. It is only mildly tart but not funky, not heavy but light on that palate. I did not enjoy this beer as much as I hoped. I think Death and Taxes is a superior beer by far and I'm basically done with this. Thanks for another #1 (if it survives the spot after this review) but I don't think I'd have it again.

Huge, huge thanks to HJJH for getting this 1L growler out my way. Big surprise that they filled growlers of. Thought this was a DONG I'd have to wait awhile to try. Currently the #1 Euro Dark Lager. Served in a Hill Farmstead long-stem tulip.
Pours a dark brown with a light tan head and a bit of lacing. Thin collar. The nose brings a slight amount of roast as well as some mild hops and a slight acidic cherry character. The flavor is mostly malty with a bit of roast and some noticeable Continental hops. A bit of cherry there as well. Light body and slight acidity. Not bad at all, but not quite as good as the Moonlight dark lagers that I've come across. Interesting flavor and profile, though it doesn't quite measure up.

This is easily one of my favorite beers in the world. Up there with, maybe even ahead of, Augustiner. Regardless, it is an incredible session beer.
Now, of course, a LOT of the enjoyment of this beer is the experience of where you're drinking it. With the accordion player or oompah loompah duo playing tunes, the servers constantly bringing you new glasses because they know you want one before you do, the other servers cajoling you into shots of cinnamon schnapps, and the beer cheese appetizer, you can't help but love this beer. Great color, great head, great smell, great feel, incredible taste.

A - Black body with a beige kahki head
S - Chocolate malty head
T & M & D - This beer was very smooth and had notes of chocolate, smooth spices. There was a malty toffee sweetness to it as well. This beer had to be drinkable becuase they kept coming and I kept drinking them.
What a great beer and what a great place to enjoy it. I did not find it a tourist trap at all.

On-tap at U Fleků, Prague, Czech Republic
A: The beer is very dark amber (near black) in color and poured with a two finger high beige head. The head has good retention properties and took a look time to die down and also left lacy rings of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are aromas of chocolate malts in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of dark malts and chocolate. There is a little bit of sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer goes down very smoothly and is very sessionable.

Contrary to popular belief U Fleku is not available only at the brewery in Prague. The second and only other location is at the Pilsner Urquell Brauerei Ausschank ("brewery outlet") in the Altstadt in Dusseldorf Germany. After 3 attempts to get into the pub we were finally succesful in getting there when it was open.
Tasted at the Pilsner Urquell pub in Dusseldorf Germany December 2008.
A: Pours a dark brown almost opaque but clear. Very little variation in color toward the rim. Medium head caramel in color.
S: Very inviting toffee, spice, fruit, malt, chocolate, and a hint of liquorice
T: Chocolate, nutty, spicy goodness with a mild but fresh hop finish. Reminiscent of British real ale that is mild in carbonation with a fresh hop character.
M: Light in body to remind you of the lager style that it is but almost velvety and lingering to tease for another sip.
D: One of my favorites. The most well rounded as far as wanting more with every sip yet packed with flavor you cant imagine belonging in the beer you hold.
Only available on tap at the 2 places mentioned. A must have beer for the novice or the professional.

After having this beer numerous times before while studying literally around the corner, it became time for a review.
Its a dark mahogany brown lager with a very rich blackish hue. Head is voluminous and voluptuous. Light aromas of roast malt, some candy sugar. Dry in taste, smooth, easy and pairs excellently with roast pork and dumplings. Well done all around.

A = Dark, almost pitch black other than the cherry oak edges in the light. A nice 2-3 finger light brown (nutmeg/cinnamon) colored head that sticks around in the early going.
S = Smells like a stout from the start - roasted nuts, caramel, coffee, chocolate and the slightest hint of hops
T = Tastes like a stout - coffee and chocolate along with some smooth caramelized nuts throughout. Grain/earthiness is subdued but there to show you some of the beer's lager side and the hops kick in in the back third for a nice balance
M = Phenomenally smooth with medium carbonation, fills the whole mouth, the tiny bubbles give the beer some volume and makes it almost feel grainy. Would have to say one of the best feeling beers tasted to date.
D = Incredibly drinkable. It's a stout soul in a dark lager's glass! Delicious flavors balanced by the subtle hops and the perfect mouthfeel make this beer drinkable all night and then some.
Did not even know Prague had the very dark lagers until I stumbled onto this beer. Even thought it was a stout at first, that's how similar it smelled, tasted, and felt. Would have to say this beer even beats out many stouts at what they do best.

Here's the major (and perhaps only) reason to visit U Flecku.
Rocky beige head that leaves ring lace after each sip. Near black color where some light would come through the edge of the glass.
Strong yeast aroma with a darker (crystal or chocolate?) malt smell.
A complex blend of darker malt flavors. I can detect black patent grains. There is a good shot of hops at the swallow. The body is moderate with an above average level of carbonation. Frankly, this is a delicious treat.

Best dark lager around. Prague has a lot of dark lagers but this micro is one of the best. You can only get in at u fleku which is kinda of expensive for what it is, but this beer is great.
Dark in color and has a light full flavor taste. Perfect example of what a dark lager should be. I can't locals were saying this beer was going down hill. How much better can it be.

I visited the brewery with a couple of friends and after an exceptional guided tour we went to sample the beer. I sampled the beer slowly and found it to be incredibly smooth yet somewhat nutty; smokey and a little stout finish.
I was very surprised of the taste. It was not a traditional heavy dark beer as the smoothness was very similar to a good German larger ala Paulaner. I was very impressed with the mix of dark ale with a larger attitude in disguise. This proved to be very good as my non dark ale friends enjoyed it immensely.
This beer is very good for geting people into dark ale. Just a shame they don't export it. I picked up a glass and another for a mate at the shop.

Beer on-tap, tasted in 2000 in the brewery.
Probably the pub-brewery's most famous in Prague. U Fleku is also said to be the oldest in the world (brewing since 1499).
Appearance : Dark brown color
Smell : liquorice, roasted
Taste and mouthfeel : Spicy, liquorice, bitter finish with sweet coffee aromas.
Dinkability : A very good beer not in the style "Euro dark lager" but Marzen (dark)

Had on draught at U Fleku, Prague, Czech Republic.
Pours a beautiful dark brown with a tan head, clear, not cloudy. Smells very sweet, malty. Tastes too sweet, a lot of residual malt, no noticeable hops. Smooth and creamy, no extra CO2 noted, medium to thick on the tongue. Too sweet to have many, but a decent drink to try.
As stated before, U Fleku is a tourist trap you must visit in Prague. Avoid the awful liquor they put in front of you and expect you to pay for. More than one of these beers is too much.

Dark brown, clear, with a three finger head. Great retention and lacing. Toffee aromas and some molasses
Roasted malt goodness here, with little to no bitterness to get in the way. Caramel, toffee, watery coffee, and a hint of spiciness or liquirice. Very easy mouthfeel.
Finishes smooth and clean. Not too dry or sweet. Not that you'd notice though, since the waiter will have given you another before you've put the empty glass down...

If you go to Prague it is almost an obligation to go to the brew house of Pivovar U Fleku. The atmosphere is a little funky as it is a tourist recreation of an old beer hall. An accordion was playing music, and trying to play songs from each tourists country (We got California Here I Come). The beer was served too cold but I let it sit for a while before drinking. . It is a very dark brown tending toward black. . Average sized creamy tan head. Big nose of roasted malts and oak, along with dark chocolate and coffee. Flavor is much like the nose, and quite strong of roasted malts.
Tourist trap prices and they stick a little glass of liqueur in front of you and expect you to pay for it, which is a little irritating. There are waitpersons lurking about with big trays of beer ready to stick another mug in front of you the moment you finish drinking. But this stuff is actually a little unique, and a trip to Prague would not be complete without drinking a mug or two of this interesting brew.

As someone else said, I too was tired of drinking all the Pils so popular in Czech and Eastern Europe so when I walked in this place I was in heaven. Poured a dark brown color with a nice tan head. Nose was strong of roasted malt, which was welcoming. Also had notes of coffee and maybe some caramel. I came here several nights in a row and drank a lot of this. The drinkabilty is so high that even some friends who dont normally like "dark" beer were quaffing these down. I miss this beer.
