Directly opposite the Het Groene Dal (see BF), the Pikardijn was my favourite of the two bars we visited on Easter Sunday 2002. A large horizontal Wooden Cask painted on the butt-end with “Kaffee De Pikardijn, gespecialiseerd in Belgische Bieren”, marked the entrance, which is a small path that leads down to the actual building as it is set well back from the narrow road. A real drinkers bar this, with a much more relaxed drinking atmosphere than the bar we had just been to. Whereas the Het Groene Dal is akin to an upmarket country restaurant that specializes in food and happens to serve good beer, the Pikardijn is more like a multi-roomed specialist Belgium Alehouse, than happens to sell food. If that makes sense?!
This is most definitely reflected in the beer list, well over 200 beers feature here. Whilst not the biggest range ever, there are some really unusual beers to be found here, for even the most discerning drinker. For example, I had Tonneke (5%ABV), a malty beer from the small East Flanders artisan brewery of Contreras, very rarely seen and a first for me. The Tables in the outside drinking area served as base camp for the few hours we were here, until it rained and we were forced inside. Food was basic fare, but nonetheless very good, reasonably priced and though not up to the standard of the Het Groene Dal, perfectly adequate for our needs. An old style multi-roomed Belgium Alehouse that resembled a "Pub", it had an exceptional friendly atmosphere, was festooned with brewery adverts on the walls of the many rooms (some hidden) and had a very real warm welcoming and cozy feel about it. Run by the same family that operate the HopDuvel, Ghent, we were made very welcome. One of the very best Belgium Country Pubs I have been to by far.

Rustic, earthy, comfortable and unpretentious. No chairs at bar. A nice outside area. Total difference from the place across the street. Several rooms of the main bar, including one with a skylight. Very homey bar; candles on wooden tables, checked tablecloths. Some very unusual beers were served...when we mentioned our interest in vintage beer, we were served Fantome Saison Noir, which was the first batch of Black Ghost, and quite amazing.
