Went on a mini brewery crawl this weekend stopping at Triple C, Heist, Birdsong, and finishing with dinner at Growlers Pourhouse. Started with Triple C, then Heist Brewery, now on to one of Charlotte's newer craft breweries; Birdsong Brewing...
Located directly across the street from NoDa Brewing. Unlike NoDa, Birdsong is a bit more of a mystery. While the entrance to NoDa is directly in the front of the building, Birdsong is situated in the back by the old railroad tracks.
There is a fairly large patio area with outdoor seating, large enough to accommodate live music and plentiful seating. As you walk in you see that the interior is long and narrow, with an unfinished feel. The walls are metal siding and cinder block with posters/artwork featuring dogs and beer. Not nearly as polished as most of the other Charlotte area breweries (with the exception of Four Friends). While the place lacks the artistic touch and finish of Heist, it is cozy and comfortable, and you feel at home when you are there...
There is really not much in the way of service... You have the bar tender and that is about it, if you want another beer you either walk up to the bar, or signal to the bartender; and luckily the place is small enough that this system seems to work well. We did not sit on the patio, so I don't know how the service was there. Unfortunately, unless you are talking to the brewer, the bartender/waitstaff does not know much about the beer besides whats on tap and whats not.
There is no kitchen; sometimes there is a food truck outside, but otherwise the bowls of peanuts on the tables will have to suffice. So it's best to either eat before you come or call ahead to see if one of the food trucks will be on site.
Now... on to the beer. I have tried a few of their beers in restaurants/bars around town, but there were some on tap that I had not tried yet so I got a flight of all of their offerings. There was a pale, a saison, a witbeir, a brown, an IPA, and a jalapeno pale ale. I am not a big fan of saisons, but as far as saisons go this one was decent. The brown was decent, the IPA was decent, the pale ale was pretty good, the witbier was quite good and the jalapeno pale was terrific. All in all the best beer selection of the night!! I am quite impressed with this little hole in the wall brewery. I will be on the lookout for Birdsong beers around Charlotte...
Well, now that I have samples or pints of beers from Triple C, Heist, and Birdsong I am ready to get some food... On to Growlers Pourhouse.

Atmosphere: super small and cozy. really nice patio area that would have been great in the summer. very good acoustic singer while i was there.
Quality: i only got to try three of their beers but two were great and one was good. so i expect the rest to be fairly good too
Service: nice, happy to share a quick taste of some beers
Selection: very good beers but they don't have the broadest selection. but enough to satisfy a night of checking out new beer.
Overall: one of my favorite places i got to visit while in north carolina. very cozy and good music. great beer, what else can you ask for.

A smaller brewery across the street from No Da Brewing. This is a tap room with maybe 10 seats at the bar and another 10 tables. A view of the brewery is available. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. No food, but No Da usually has a roach coach parked across the street so you won't starve.
I think they get a lot of overflow traffic from No Da. Maybe that was thier marketing plan. Owned by seven people, you can also tell they didn't have as big a budget as No Da. A 10bbl system and far fewer fermenters. I appeared they use corny kegs for serving on site and they had a few kegs that looked like for distribution. Black kegs. Way cool.
The beers were clean and I felt to style for those actually in a style.
The taproom is minimist but it works. I think the lighting made out of Mason jars is pretty neat.
I think with a little more time and experience their beers will be top notch.

Cool place. Located directly across the way from NoDa, so there's no excuse not to check out both places. Birdsong is a bit more laid back and "minimalist" than its neighbor. The layout is simple and modest, there's an outside porch area, and a small bar and seating area inside. The back of the bar is lined with various stickers from microbreweries across the nation, so it goes without saying these guys are in tune with the craft beer scene.
I believe our bartender was actually the brewer/owner, or at least one of them, but I'm not sure. If not, well then he was quite educated in the house beers. Friendly service, and well-rounded beer knowledge.
There were six brews on tap, none were necessarily extraordinary, but all were solid, the jalapeno pale ale being the furthest away from the "norm" in the world of standardized flagships. For a newer brewery, I'd say they're off to a very good start. Prices on beer were on par. Merch available in the form of glassware and shirts...you gotta love that little birdie logo. ^_^
Definitely visit-worthy, and like I said, if you're visiting NoDa, you're basically right there anyway, so give these guys a try too.

Very nice, homey, but also hip...brewery tap-room, with a lovely selection of their latest craft beers. 5 regular beers are on tap at any given time, with another guest tap, and one or two "seasonals" (small batches they keep until they run out...). Very humble place, with really beautiful female servers (GOT to have that!)....who, again though, are not stuck up and are happy to talk with you.
No food served there, but at dinner time, there is usually a top-knotch, chef-quality food truck parked across the street--so really an ideal place to hang out for an entire evening, imho.
One of my favorite places in Charlotte, due to the hip-but-comfortable atmosphere, and of course the attractive women. Closes NO LATER than 10 (usually earlier, check their website) so plan accordingly. Great place to hang out with friends without TVs...or the crush of a typical bar.
