On tap at Growlers Pour House in Charlotte.
Pours clear red-amber with a full, creamy and durable bone-colored head that leaves fine lacing patterns.
Smells rather ordinary, with no sign of the jalapenos. You will definitely taste the hot peppers in this beer, although Birdsong used enough restraint that I would not call this challenging to drink. There is some mild heat in the mouth which, I think, is why the ABV seems higher than 5.5%. Given the chilies, this pale ale would probably benefit from more hops so that they aren't so completely masked.

O: A chili beer with little else going one, but that’s not always a bad thing. Worked well with a sandwich and fries.

On tap at the brewery, served in a pint glass

Pours a clear amber/copper color with a small off white head that recedes quickly leaving behind quite a bit of lacing

The nose is fairly mild; the star is the jalapeno, there is also a floral hop component and bits of citrusy hops as well. The malts are bready and sweet and balance nicely with the spiciness of the jalapeno and hops. There is almost a hint of smokiness from the peppers.

The flavor is balanced well with bready and sweet malts, floral and citrusy hops, and is accented well with the jalapenos. Very simple clean flavor. Light/medium bodied and well carbonated. Slightly slick on the tounge and finishes on the dry side. I was not overly impressed with the base beer (Free Will Pale Ale), but this beer makes it seem as though it was brewed with adding jalapeno peppers in mind all along. The flavors pair so well that the end result easily exceeds the sum of the parts.

Really, an impressive beer with lots of nuances, and supremely easy to drink.
