Berliner Weissbier |  3.50% ABV

Availability: Summer. bottle (6), on-tap (5)

Notes:
The name Prussia originates from Frederick the Great. Frederick was trained to brew this very delicate style of beer and later became the King of Prussia. Our interpretation of the Berliner Weisse style is very traditional. Prussia pours a hazy straw hue with a nice clean tart finish. Enjoy alone or with flavored syrup.

Light hazy straw color. Small little head that reduces quickly. Some spritzy, champagne-like carbonation. Nothing special.

Smell is wheat, some lemon, acidic tartness, a bit of a light cider smell. Not particularly complex, but very tasty smelling.

Taste is some light granny smith apple, lemon, wheat, kind of grainy malty backbone. I wish the tartness was a bit more pronounced, but this is really tasty.

Mouthfeel is a little thin, dry, well carbonated, very lively. Great mouthfeel, just what I want for a summer beer.

The drinkability on this is nuts. It's not the most complex, but it's a really great summer beer. Very refreshing and light, perfect for those 100 degree days.

Thanks to TheCPJ for sharing this. Bomber into a snifter, the brew appears a crystal clear, light yellow color with a big bubbly white head. Fairly decent retention for the style. A light swirl agitates about a finger back to the surface.

This has a very clean and inviting aroma suggesting minor hints of lemon and wheat aspects. A trace amount of minerals and sulfur come out across the backend of the nose.

The taste reiterates the aroma with cleanliness and pleasant subtleties of lemony lacto and suggestions of yogurt. There is a mild sweet grainy character present mixing with a bit of wheat that privides a mild tartness to the brew that accents the lemony lacto and soft fruit inclusion like pear/apple that evolves as it warms.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is light, refreshing, clean and effortlessly drinkable like a good berliner should be. At times this brew really reminded me of a well made kolsch but with wheat and a lemony lacto edge of tartness. This is not sour by any means, it is tart and enjoyable and right where it shuold be in my opinion. I would love to have this again.

I had this on-tap at 4 Hands during a recent trip to St. Louis and before a Cardinal game that went 12 innings!

Served in a tulip.

A: Poured a fairly clear golden color, with a slight chill haze, and not much head to speak of. While it was Miler Lite-esque in appearance, I'll give it much more credit than that.

S: Mild, yet inviting, with some wheat, corn, and German malt, along with a fresh filtered water undertow.

T: The sour component was understated, yet still present under close inspection. Germanic in malt bill, mildly acidic, especially in the aftertaste, and became more and more pronounced the more I sipped.

M: Not much carbonation or lacing, but that's not what this beer was supposed to be about anyway. The bitterness was next to nill.

O: This was slightly disappointing, yet it was still good. Also, the prices at 4 Hands are very reasonable.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, JealousChalice!

Hazy golden with lots of visible carbonation and a moderately sized white head that leaves thin streaks of lacing down the glass.

Mild aroma, but what's here is very much to style: wheat, some acidic, sour character, a bit of lemon, and white fruit.

The flavor is similar, with wheat and lemon characterisitcs dominating, and a very mild sour component.

Medium bodied with high carbonation. Near-perfect for the style and incredibly drinkable.

A very straight-forward, incredibly drinkable Berliner.

Presentation: Snifter at 44 Stone Public House, during the England/Italy match...the beer was great, the outcome of the game sucked!

Appearance: Lightly hazy golden beer with a white crown that soon fades.

Smell; Nice, tart apple and apple cider notes lead here. This is simple, and sort of one-dimensional, but crisp and inviting for all that.

Tatse: Beautiful crisp, dry malt background, slightly earthy, with moderate tartness and vibrant Belgian stone-fruit notes (I'm thinking a hint of underripe peach?). This has excellent balance, and is tart, but not sour, making it extremely refreshing.

Mouthfeel: Light, tart, and refreshing.

Overall: From the little I've read of Berliner Weissbiers, this might be a bit on the mellow side (in terms of sourness), but this is hands-down one of the most elegant, flavorful modest-gravity (3.5%!!!) beers I've ever had. A 5oz pour was $1.50 and a 12-16oz (I can't remember which) was under $4.00. What a great beer!

Pours a hazy, yellow/gold color. 1/6 inch head of a white color. Poor retention and poor lacing. Smells of lemon, wheat, slight pale malt, and a hint of sweet malt. Fits the style of a Berliner Weissbier. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable sourness. Tastes of strong wheat, strong lemon, and slight pale malt. Overall, except for a very weak appearance, good body and feel.

Thanks to JealousChalice for sharing this one at NoSignsOfPain's birthday bottleshare hosted by mrbubbler.

Pours a slightly murky light yellow with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. No lacing on this one. Smell is of grain, spice, and some slight tart aromas. Taste is the same again with a light tartness and grainy aftertaste. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty and refreshing but nothing too exciting.

A - Poured out a hazy, golden yellow color with a small, very bubbly, white head of foam. It left sudsy trails of foam on the glass.

S - It smelled tart and citrusy with a touch of wheat and spices.

T - It tasted slightly tart with some spiciness. Some cracked wheat flavor.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a very subtle pucker-factor. A light to medium bodied ale.

O - This is a great sessionable brew. Another very tasty brew by 4 Hands.

bar far the worst of the beers on offer at 4 hands. this one pours a very milky pale yellow color with some haze. smells like a bottle of lemon juice from concentrate, acidic and off-putting. flavor has some wheat malt and a ton of tartness that doesnt seem to fit. really like lemon juice added to a light wheat beer, not nice at all, but gets more tolerable as you drink it. this is not how i know the berliner weiss style to be. feel is okay, extremely light with soda-like carbonation. the tartness really leaves a funny finish in your mouth. overall there is room to improve this babe, maybe pull back the reigns on the lemon a little bit and get a touch more body happening. again, this was the only beer i had at 4 hands that wasnt exceptional.

Review transferred from notes.
Poured into a tulip glass form the tap.

Pours very nice pale and hazy golden straw yellow. There is a nice 1 inch tall head that is quite dense and has some slight retention but for the most part goes down quickly to a thin film.

Aroma is nice and fresh with some nice wheat notes and some good grain. Earthy and bready but with some slight corn husk notes. Slight lemmony zest and a bit of a tart vinegar arona. Quite mild.

Taste is nice and refreshing with some goid clean grain and a nice corn husky note. Nice lemony tartness that is clean with a slight sour cream tartness as well. Pretty nice and approcahable. Good clean mourhfeel with a dry finish on the back end.

Pretty good berliner weisse. Nice and approachable. Tart but refreshing and not overwhelming. A great intro to sours. There are some nice earthy grain tones that play well with the tartness.
