A - Poured out a golden-yellow color with a two-finger, white head of foam. It left sticky rings of lace.

S - Smelled of pears and white peppercorns.

T - All the great qualities of a saison with a touch of pear flavors and some peppery spiciness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale.

O - This is a really unique spin on the saison. I like it. Another really tasty brew from 4 Hands.

Pale straw gold with an orange tint in low light. Huge head of white foam, slowly dissipates leaving behind a tornado flurry of spotty lace in the glass. After a few minutes the head is gone. Nice clarity.

Pepper and phenolic yeast spice mainly in the nose.

Flavor is also spice forward, pear is subdued. Dry with a light phenolic yeast note and mild bitterness. Light feel with some effervescence to it. Pear isn't too high in the mix, it's more of an aftertaste that lingers with the yeast spiciness. Overall was good to try, more spice forward if that's your thing.

Pours a fizzy pasty white fizzy like 1 finger head fades at a med pace at first then slows, nice lacing, very clear slight sediment haze pilsner yellow honey colored.

Nose is a typical saison, berry light funk, grainy grassy hay aromas with a bit of wheat and toasty grainy malts, light lemony aromas and lemongrass, light saison spices, a bit of bready yeasty doughy aroma, faint orange peel, very light white pepper, no pear though.

Taste starts with a semi sweet malts flavor, grainy slightly doughy malt with touch of yeasty flavor and light saison funk. Lemon zest, orange zest, lemongrass, some saison spices and hint of peppery flavor and a bit of pepper heat even. Malts also bring wheat, light grainy pilsner like, hay stalk and crushed straw dust. Some bitterness from the lemon and orange zest and light grassy lemony hops I think, and faint pear skin but not really pear juice. Finish is grainy straw hay malts and straw dust, and plenty of lemon zest and bitter slight rind with light lemony hops and light saison spices.

Mouth is med bodied, tons of effervescent carb, perhaps a bit too much.

Overall ok, nothing special, nice saison spices esp the light peppery heat, bitter rind, lots of lemony flavors, very little funk, but nice drinkable beer.

Pours a cloudy, pale gold color. 1/2 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of coriander, wheat, slight yeast, hop, hint of banana?. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight banana, pale malt, slight sweet malt, slight yeast, and a hint of hop. Overall, good appearance, aroma, and blend.

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this bottle.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a crystal clear golden hue with a fluffy two finger head that leaves light side lacing and a thin blanket.

S - Aromas of lots of peppercorns faint citrus zest light barnyard funk. Quite nice, but where's the pear juice?

T - Taste is fairly nice light and funky with faint malt sweetness. Lots of peppercorns, faint citrus don't get much pear juice at all. Quite unfortunate.

M - Mouthfeel is very solid. Higher carbonation makes this super drinkable.

O - Overall I was somewhat let down by this beer. Wish there was more pear in this....or any at all.

A: cloudy pale yellow. Visibly fizzy. Serve in a tulip with a minimal white head. Very light lacing.

S: aroma is fairly yeasty. Some good esters going on here. With a hint if pear.

T: taste is more if the same. Apple juice, pear juice, light malts, and a mild tartness. Light, simple, and very easy to drink.

M: lighter body. Heavier carbonation. Moderately prickly

O: a simple session Saison.

On-tap, served in a tulip

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a foamy, paper white cap that rises to fill the glass and falls slowly. Some spider web lacing.

The aroma is classic saison. Clean, bright spice, earthy hops, mild funk, lemons, with pear juice undertones. The pear is a little soft, but a nice addition. I don't know of any other beers using pears.

The pears come out a little more in the flavor profile, lending a soft, fruity complement to the classic saison flavors. Coriander, tangerines, grassy hops, dry hay, and a touch of bubble gum.

Clean, crisp, and sharp. Light body with strong carbonation. The finish is fairly dry with the lingering flavors of pear and spice.

This saison is welcome in my glass anytime. Sharp flavors, clean, strong elements of the style with the unique addition of pears. Well-crafted on all fronts.

The actual name is Pyrus, not Pryus. Almost couldn't find it on the site.

Poured from the bottle a very lightly-hazed deep gold color with two fingers of bright white head. Very little lacing.

Aroma of fresh pear, candy sugar, bubble gum, and a light herbal spiciness.

The taste really matched up with the aroma. Pear, bubble gum, candy sugar, herbal spices and light earthy malts. White pepper came through in the finish.

Medium bodied and dry with a moderate carbonation.

A very nice Saison from an up-and-coming local brewery. I'll be having this one again.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 22oz bottle.

Pours a traditional gorgeous, hazy golden color with some slight orange hints on the edges. Nice white slightly dense head forms to about 1.5 inches. Nice retention that slowly recedes.

Aroma is delicious and very true to style but with some nice fruit juice sweetness. Aroma of some nice funk and dry yeasty notes. Some nice pear juice notes. There is some nice grassy hop notes on the back end that lend the beer a slight Belgian IPA note.

Flavor starts off funky and fruit juicy sweet to start off. Very nice barnyard taste with some nice slight citrusy hop notes. Has a nice 4 Hands hop note to it mixed in with some nice fruit juice sweetness. Nice crisp saison notes. The yeasty notes play well with some good grain and the pear juice notes. Very nicely done.

Pretty good brew. 4 Hands is coming up quick as one of the best around St. Louis. Nice traditional Saison notes mixed in with pear notes and some slight hops.

Enjoyed on-tap @ 4 Hands Brewing Company in St. Louis, MO for $6. Tapped from the Wooden Tap Handle into a 12oz Tulip Glass.

Aroma- A malty, upfront aroma starts this one out. Light oranges and coriander. Hits the nose with minimal spices but more malt and citrus and fruit characters.

Appearance- Received with a 1 finger, frothy head that has very average retention. Has a dark, golden body that is completely full of haze. Leaves a few suds behind.

Flavor- Citrus, malt, and mild coriander comes out in this Saison. Effervescent and finishes semi-dry.

Mouthfeel- Light Bodied, High Carbonation, Effervescent, and has a nice sour/funk note.

Overall Impression- While 4 Hands will be a new spot to hang out and enjoy new beers, this one will be on my radar! A great example of the style and highly recommend if available on-tap here. I hope they think about bottling this guy!

light pear combined with a fresh funk. hint of citrus hops.

similar to nose, a well balanced pear to funk ratio. nothing over done here, just balance. white pepper and orange zest are very hidden. maybe a hint of burn in the finish.

mild to moderate carbonation, clean but dry finish

this was really good, better than prunus. i would and plan on drinking more of this.

Pours reddish orange with a bold and thick white head that sticks for a while. Smells of lemon at the forefront with a bit of melon and banana followed by pepper and distant notes of caramel. Grainy, peppery, fruity, citrusy and a bit sour to the tongue up front. Has a slight earthiness and some barnyard funk for the follow up. Exceptionally dry and light bodied with a hint of alcohol. This is a sharp dressed beer that is ready for a warm summer night on the town.

22oz into a tulip. Pours a golden yellow w/ a solid bright white head.

Aroma is very floral and spicy, lots of fruity esters from the saison yeast.

Taste is likewise floral, spicy, and fruity. White pepper is there along with some clove, but in spite of the name I would not have guessed the pear juice.

Mouthfeel is soft and easy drinking. The spice gives it a nice crisp bite on the finish.

Overall a solid Belgian offering from this Midwest brewery.

Thanks to shebby for the bottle. Tasted 3 February 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours a translucent golden yellow. Like looking through gold wax paper. Half-finger of white head, gone fast, little lacing. Nice column of bubbles.

Smell is bright and flowery, with a touch of funk and a hit of sweetness. That juicy sweetness is thanks to the pear juice, I assume. Very mild peppery spice. Definitely on the floral end of the saison spectrum, and I think it'd be better with a little more funk.

Taste starts out rich and juicy, half floral, one quarter buttery, and one quarter earthy. But that lasts only a second, before it turns to bitterness that washes all that other niceness away. Good, but would have been much better if that initial burst had lasted.

Feel is a bit blah. Medium-bodied, low carbonation that just provides a soft fuzz. Needs more carbonation, IMO. Lasting flavor. Fine, could be better.

A pretty good saison, solidly in the upper-middle tier. It's flowery, but not clean enough to be a pure floral saison. It's stuck in the middle of a couple places that really work, but it's not quite solidly in any of them.

Big thanks to FTowne for this one...

A: Pours a cloudy light yellow with a massive amount of pure white head. The foam takes quite a bit to settle and there is a ton of lacing left on the glass as it drinks.

S: The nose is light malt, wheat, bitter citrus zest, and really mild pepper. I get a bit of fresh cut grass and a bit of candy cigarettes. It smells alright, but it's pretty bitter for a saison. I wish there was a bit more pepper in the nose.

T: This beer starts out with a light malt base. The bitter citrus rind comes in next and overpowers. It's tingly and light peppered, but I don't get even a little bit of pear juice.

M: Light bodied beer. It's light and refreshing to start, gets bitter and almost astringent in the middle. The finish gets more mellow and sweet with a nice pepper kick.

O: This is a decent beer, but it's not something that I would want to drink all the time. I really wanted to love this beer (the ingredients are all right in my wheel house), but it just didn't live up to the billing. I got no pear flavors out of it and I would have loved some more pepper notes. Solid overall, but I don't know if I will be returning to this brew again.

Served this Saison on tap, at the brewery in a pint glass. This ale poured a light golden color, produced a nice white head, average retention and below average amount of lacing left on the glass. The aroma of this beer consisted of fresh pear juice, sweet malted grain and some spicy hop aroma. Light in body,the flavor profile featured, sweet malted grain, pear juice, and a spicy hop finish. This is a beer style that I really enjoy and think is vastly overlooked by American craft brewers. I enjoyed this version and would order it again in the future. Prost!

Clear golden colored body, huge foamy white head, leaves good amount of lacing.

Smell is flowers, saison yeast, hints of salt and pepper, maybe some light sweet fruit but I'm not getting the citrus that's supposed to be in this.

Taste is light and subtle but really nice--mild fruit (pear I guess), pepper again and maybe salt, flowers, saison yeast.

Mouthfeel is really nice, super drinkable.

Thanks to sampx for this! First beer trade right here, and looking forward to trying something from 4 Hands. I love their labeling.

Pours a hazy gold color that shows off the abundant carbonation. Attractive and thick white head that drops down quickly to a thin lacing and that leaves a good amount of head behind.

The aroma is exactly what one expects from a saison. Herbal, fresh, lightly fruity, some peppery notes in there too. Pear is nothing more than a faint note of dry fruitiness in the background. Very decent Saison aroma, though I do wish the pear would have a bit more dominance.

Taste echoes the aroma, with notes of fresh sagebrush, white pepper, honeydew, and grape skins. Mild bitterness, and a dry, fruity finish and aftertaste. Medium body, crisp carbonation, fluffy, and ultimately refreshing.

This is really good beer. The one thing that makes this beer less than perfect is the fact that the pear juice is lost in this beer. I mean, it's fine that the pear is subtle, but if you are calling the beer Pyrus Saison, it should have a bigger character of pear. Overall though, really liked this beer and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good Saison.

This is my first beer from the St. Louis brewery.

From a tulip, the beer poured an attractive light lemon chiffon color with a 1 finger head.

A strong lemon aroma from the head which diminished only slightly as the beer warmed.

This Saison is a bit carbonated, although that is usual for this style. With a prominent peppery taste, perhaps the carbonation could be toned down a bit in future batches.

The finish is unusual- and makes the beer quite enjoyable to drink: good fruity lemon -peppery finish. The pepper actually adds to the beer- making it different than other Saisons. As the beer warmed, I enjoy the distinctive peppery finish more and more.

One of the problems with Saisons is that they can be boring or imbalanced- the carbonation overpowering the fruit. This beer is neither.
It's a distinctive approach to the style and worth drinking. Will try again.

Beautiful head that maintained. Very little lacing. Color is a pale yellow with just a hint of cloudiness. Plenty of effervescence. Not much going on at the nose, other than citrus notes.

This one had a sharp beginning and clean finish, but not much in between. Not a whole lot of body. The orange zest was very understated, and I didn't catch any pear at all. Certainly a refreshing and drinkable ale, but nothing to write home about.
