22oz bottle poured into a CBS snifter

Pours black with a thin brown head that dissipated quickly. Opaque in the glass.

Smells sweet with lots of roasted malts and a bit of molasses, a bit of a vanilla undertone. A little boozy but by no means is it too much.

Tastes of dry roasted malts, a bitter-sweet chocolate and a little fig or dark cherry, something that I can't really place and just makes me keep taking sip after sip to try and figure it out.

The mouthfeel is lighter than I would have expected based on the look and smell of this beer, however, it is not thin and watery by any stretch. IT is a bit over-carbonated for me though and could certainly be toned down I think.

Overall this is a solid RIS with some great flavors going on. I would love it if this were a bit thicker and less carbonated, but all in all a very good RIS that I will pick up again.

Dated June 28 2012

A: Thick, dark head with some retention and some lacing.

S: Initially strong roasted barley, then some milk chocolate comes thru. The nose is not too shy.

T: Lots of roasted barley. Dried fruit comes thru in the middle and is probably the most appealing flavor. Charred husk lingers on the finish. This beer cries out for food or something else to serve as a foil. Almonds helped.

M: Not as thick as many in the style, but not problematically thin.

O: Maybe I'm missing out on some of the brighter flavors because of the age, but this seems sort of a one note imperial stout. I really don't need a bomber of this, but then it's because it's a bomber that it sat in the fridge for as long as it did.

22oz. bottle generously shared by newbrewbb. Served in a wine glass. Pours one shade shy of black with a quarter inch, khaki-colored head embedded with ringlets of varying sizes. Nose expresses dark malts, molasses and a trace of soy sauce. Taste is really quite exceptional - char, cocoa, a suggestion of dark fruit and a slight bittering at the finish to keep it from being overly sweet or cloying. Mouthfeel is medium-light in body and slightly chewy. Overall, I have to say that this is an excellent example of the RIS style (and in my own backyard, nonetheless). ABV is well-hidden as well. That said, I'd love to see this added to their canning line as a seasonal brew.

On-tap 8/4/2012 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a large brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee and dark fruit along with a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a strong bitter-sweet flavor of dark chocolate that remains dominant the whole time you drink the beer. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry but slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, well-hidden and strong kick, good representation of style, this is a solid big stout to drink for a while but there are others that I would choose first.

22oz bottle. Pours a rich black color with an inch of frothy light brown head. Some lacing. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, berries and roasted malts. Taste is smoky roasted malts upfront with dark chocolate and espresso flavors. Hints of berries and earth. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Not a lot of alcohol presence. Overall, good Russian Imperial worth having again.

The beer pours a dark black with a small tan head.

It smells of roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee.

It's on the lighter side in body for the style, but still has a great mouthfeel. It's silky smooth. The taste is more of that roasted coffee and chocolate flavor. This is a very tasty stout.

Overall, I'd buy it again. It's a great beer from a new brewery in my homestate. You can't really go wrong there.
