A - dark amber with a thick brownish head that has great retention
S - candy sugar, big wiffs of caramel, faint alcohol
T - bread, candy sugar, birthday cake, sweet malt, mildly bitter finish
M - full bodied, well carbonated
This is a really nice beer. It's hugely malty and deep. The sugar and sweetness is intense but not cloying. The alcohol is well hidden for the ABV. The all-around character of this beer is truly delicious. It's worth a try.

Candela - A Rye Barley wine aged on Cedar spirals
Cigar City/Green Flash Collab
On tap at Green Flash Brewing – 6oz pour
*05/16/13
A: Dark amber body with pristine clarity topped with a thin dark khaki head. Displaying some decent retention efforts for such a big ABV brew. Leaves light dots and some speckled stick down the glass.
S: I get forward aromas of booze, caramelized malts, and spiced raisins. There is a light earthiness coming through and a slight vinous factor as well. Cedar is rather faint as the deep kettled malts pretty much take over. Warm and inviting nose and not overly boozy.
T: Tastes of dark toffee and ripe plum mixed with a bit of dried fig and raisin. There is a whisper of wood spice and light earthiness there but the deep kettle caramelized malts make up the greater portion of flavors. The Cedar gets buried here and somewhat hard to discern at times. Lower hop bitter presence while maintaining enough of a juicy punch to carry the big body and noticeable alcohol flavors. A crisp, slightly spicy rye flavor does emerge in the finish. Overall this is very smooth and making for a nice sip.
M: Moderately full body with a nice smooth and creamy texture. There is a bit of ABV warming and lower perceived bitterness on the palate. Has an oily consistency throughout that lingers down after the finish.
D: This is a nice barley wine but I expected more coming from these two great breweries to be honest. Reminds me a lot like the regular Green Flash Barley Wine with some additional rye and wood spice influence. I think a proper barrel aging and 750ml packaging/bottle conditioning would have represented this brew in a much better way.

A: One of my first pours at Hard Liver was this collaborative treat I have been wanting to try for quite some time. It poured a clear caramelish color with a small white cap, a little collar and some light and spotty lacing
S: Interesting nose. Prominent rye, a bit of candy sweetness and booze grace the nostrils
T: I was taken back by the initial flavor, not what I was expecting I suppose. The rye is very evident but not as overpowering as I thought or some may suggest. I thought the cedar presence was very nice and gave the rye a run for its money throughout the entire tasting profile. Underlying caramel sweetness, hints of toffee and Earthiness
M: Medium-full body with good carbonation, intresting mouthfeel from the cedar, then rye, then cedar and then some dry yet decadent sweetness.
O: Good! This beer was unique from start to finish and seemed to be quite the game changer at every turn.

If you enjoy the taste of a quality cigar this is a very good beer. High alcohol but exceptionally smooth taste. Sweet with a slight cedar woody taste.
Memphis flying saucer description:
"This Rye Barleywine has super rich qualities from the best British floor-malted, pale barley available. Top quality specialty malts that add to its opulent body include British Crystal and German Rye. Spanish cedar lends wood aging with a depth of dark mahogany and a hint of Szechuan peppercorn spice that cuts the luxurious malt sweetness"

12oz pour at Duckworth's Park Rd Charlotte, NC for.... $3! Unreal gr8 bar.
One of the prettier beers I've seen in a glass, complexity in appearance alone. Perhaps the best use of rye I've had the pleasure to experience. It's there in spades but tempered by hops and malts, malts that have caramel spines. Killer mouthfeel, tiny head and slightly oily lacing. At the time of this review this brew rates a respectable 88, but wow is that an understatement. If you find this on draft consider yourself lucky.

Consumed February 17th, 2013 at the Green Flash tap room, San Diego, CA. Reviewed from notes.
Appearance- clear, dark caramel brown with a creamy, one-finger head. Good sheeting.
Aroma is all rye, all the time. Wait, no some cigar tobacco in there as well! Very nice.
Flavor is sweet molasses and of course, rye. Plenty of peppery, spicy rye with a grace note of tobacco. A backdrop of fruity, estery flavors. Not terribly complex or subtle, but that's not the point. The bold flavor is very enjoyable.
Creamy mouthfeel with good carbonation.
Outstanding! The rye really gives a unique kick to this sweet, alcoholic beer.
