I've long been a fan of Orval, and Rayon Vert is clearly an approximation of that fine Trappist ale.
At first the Brett aromas and, to a lesser defree, flavors seem to dominate, but as the brew warms a bit, there are plenty of fruity and spicy bits from the Belgian strain of brewers yeast that is the main microbe at work here. I miss the particular flavor of Continental malts, but there is a very firm core of light malt flavor.
The flavor and mouthfeel of this bottle was just nearly perfect for the style. Extravagant, softly effervescent, sweet-and-tangy, and bracingly bitter in the finish. I have stashed several bottles in the cellar along with Orvals and other Brett brews, including many of my own making. I have no doubt this one will continue to develop more character and complexity for the next couple years.

This beer tasted like it was brewed with dirty socks. At first it was okay, but the warmer it got, the more unbearable the taste became. It tasted more like some kind of strange, bitter hard alcohol than a beer... not something I plan on buying again.

Uhhh...ehhh....uhhhh....I have no intro, just on to the beer:
Even once the crown is cracked, the beer barely stays inside the bottle. Pour it into a chalice, and get a very heady brew, which is burnt orange. With a head which retains as well as this and being a Belgian Pale Ale, the color fits. The aroma has some surprising dry hopping and some Belgian joy. Super fresh grass clipping with barnyard accents...a bit tart? This is a very fun nose.
It's acidic, it's dry, and it's pleasing. Slight sweet at the beigining like a pear, it turns acidic and then comes a blanket of bitterness. A little horse blanket creep into the profile, as does dry grass. As this is happening, it's medium body and bubbly mouthfeel makes the profile more groovy; it feels Belgian.
The taste may not be 100% agreeable with me, but everything else is. Well done Green Flash.

Appearance: poured into an oversized wine glass, brilliant color almost like fresh honey, a tad cloudy, large creamy head that gradually depleted over a minute to a thin covering that hugs the edge of the glass
Nose: almost toasty hops with a dank funky aroma of hops and yeast
Taste: complex, almost medicinal taste like cherry Chloraseptic sore throat spray or the way a new band-aid smells. very interesting, slight aftertaste of drupes
Mouthfeel: airy, smooth, heavily carbonated feel
Overall: an interesting belgian-style pale ale, well-made, not for everyone but a must try

Poured a cloudy orange with gigantice head that took forever to go away (and was slightly annoying) and left lace ring on top of a piney, earthy hop aroma mixed with some funky belgian yeast and a touch of orange citric. Beer is easy to drink and a smooth passer, even with the possibility of the ABV bleeding into it or something funky/sharp to hit your tongue.
The beer is definitely more hoppy than your typical Belgian, which isn't bad at all but not my preference, but the rather piney, grassy hops mix well with the Belgian yeast and gives a pleasant drinking experience (a touch of sugary sweetness from out of nowhere helps) that ends with a crisp, refreshing experience. This was a pretty good Belgian Ale but it just seemed a little underwhelming/simplistic at times for me, although I did have to let it warm since the idiot bar I went to served it in a frozen mug and called it a triple. I am not excluding this fact as it may have killed off some of the more subtle belgian charateristics and ended up in my lower score.

A: Crazy volumes of carbonation. Opening the cap let off a hiss like a tractor trailer releasing its air brakes. I barely poured a dash of the beer and the whole glass is filled to the brim with foam. Be careful when opening/pouring. The head is an off-white mountain of clouds. The body is a hazy medium shade of gold. Good lacing on the glass.
S: I get a lot of saison character from the beer. It has a horsey barnyard smell to it...a lot of funk and sour scents.
T: The taste mimics the scent closely, focusing on a musky funk quality. There is a little bit of bread flavor, and a mild hop bitterness...kind of rustic tasting...a bit like rye bread in the aftertaste. Some sour notes in there as well, but it kind-of tinges the tongue and lips then dissipates. Some of the hop character comes through in the aftertaste as well...it is a very complex beer. My rating went from a 3...3.5...to a 4 while I continued to drink the beer.
M: It has a very nice mouthfeel. It's bright and perky, and the bitterness seems to counter-balance that by grounding the overall feel of the beer. It feels medium bodied. Drinkability is moderate, because the beer tends to be a bit abrasive with its sourness and bitterness. It's not something I would have more than a bottle of.
O: Overall I found the beer to be interesting and complex. I would recommend it to die-hard fans of Belgian sours, saisons, farmhouse ales, or just interesting beers in general. The carbonation seemed overdone, which makes it difficult to pour the beer (even for a highly carbonated Belgian beer). I probably won't be buying it again, but I don't regret buying it either.

I was on vacation in Branson when I found this at Mac a Doodles liqour store near the Branson Landing. I will write a review on that later, more to follow on that. Anyway, I've never found this in a bottle, only on tap mostly. Side poured with standard vigor into my Sam Adams glass.
Appearance - awesome golden color with a magnificent, three finger pillowy head that towers over the brew. Excellent retention, excellent lacing, one of the best presentations I have ever seen out of any beer. Absolutely ridiculous.
Smell - soapiness, Belgian yeast, funk, some breads and a little citrus. A little short in the nose, but still riding high on the presentation.
Taste - yeast, funkiness, breads, Belgium what! There is a funk at the beginning of the drink which is followed by bready malts on the palate. A little hint of fruit. Barnyard funky, like Geoge Clinton.
Mouthfeel - finishes smooth and clean with a bit of hop bitterness. Funk stays on the palate for a while, really tasty. I love it
Overall - this is a great beer, I really enjoy it. I heard a lot about it from one of my friends, finally got a chance to try it thanks to liqour store in Branson, a little surprising. Condor recommended and approved

Bottle. Unknown Date. This was a gusher as soon as the cap came off. Four fingers of head mellows out to reveal spotty lacing. Life-like effervescence. The beer is slightly faded, hazy orange.
Nose offers ripe red apples, banana, vinegar, phenols, pepper, plastic, pencil shavings, light fruity hop character.
Very subdued hop presence upfront, wax, unique medicinal flavors, semi sweet grain, finishes with complex Brett bitterness.
Smooth, champagne-like carbonation, medium body, long finish.
Very interesting beer. Must try for anyone looking for a readily available Brett fix.

Tall fluffy pitted bone white head over pale yellow body.
Big white vinegar nose with some barnyard and no real hops.
Baguette breadiness, apricot, a tart yeast hit and light tangerine hops.
Fruit salad finish and tingly herbal linger.
Light to medium, round, slight cling, fizzy.
Far more Belgian (and wild) than San Diego, which I don't expect from Green Flash. Hops are just missing, really. Even as a Belgian pale, do I need quite so much Brett?

popped the cap and the head began rising... explosive. very low-density, billowy head. want to eat it like an ice cream cone- then you taste the hops...
fruity-, hoppy, belgium-y....
cant yet taste it- it's still too frothy.... huge remaining head. still waiting... has a lemon meringue pie-type of head still.... okay... here is the first sip- hops way up front... sharp grapefruit... still lots of head.... taste reminds me of a unibroue product- dont remember which one although it wasnt as sharply hopped as this.
2nd pour was much more densely packed. definitely lemon meringue pie, non-moving, thick head. decent brew.

Careful pouring this one. Produced a massive, fluffy white head. Left lots of lacing. The beer color is a hazy, medium honey color.
The aroma was of bread, banana, and light citrus. Not very strong in the nose department.
The taste was the same, but with a hint of alcohol, and hop bitterness. Somewhat light mouth-feel, and high carbonation.
Good Belgian, and easy drinking once the head receded a bit.

Poured into a Shiner Bock pint glass. No freshness date.
A- When I was looking for the freshness date, I was able to see small wisps of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Then, from a gentle pour, comes a massive three inches worth of cream colored head that retains and slowly starts to wrinkle away. Definitely bottle-conditioned. After the third pour, I finally get the bottle emptied and in goes the particles of sediment with thin wisps flowing behind them. This is the way beer is supposed to look.
S- Decadently rich Belgian yeast with a bit of wild bacteria certainly present providing a bit of a medicinal aroma. Some soap. Very crisp.
T- Quite hoppy in the onset, making me wonder if they should've just called it a Belgian IPA (especially considering the ABV), but let's not split hairs cuz this is very tasty! On the second sip, I admit that the Belgian characteristic plays the lead role but there's still that lingering bitterness. I'm glad I chose to pour the sediment in because there's a perfect amount of luscious yeast flavor that I personally love. Malts also put in their piece to provide a sturdy backbone amongst the other flavors. Notes of pepper, mild grapefruit, lemon, herbal spices and green olive.
M- Spot-on with high carbonation but still not too sharp. It's actually quite fluffy and there's a decent-sized body from the malts.
O- Damn, this is delicious. Definitely my favorite Green Flash next to Le Freak. I think they should do more Belgians since they're obviously so good at it.

Consumed February 17th, 2013 at the Green Flash tasting room.
Slightly hazy medium-to-dark golden. A nice two-finger white head leaves plenty of lacing in the glass.
Aroma is a very tart affair: like tart cherries.
Flavor : floral yeast character, some tart cherries, a little funk. Slightly powdery. Delicately sweet up front, bitter on the back.
Good carbonation tingle and finishes a little dry.
Oh yes, I will drink this again.

Amazing beer! Maybe GF should ditch the Cali hop bomb for Belgian Styles cause this little charmer rocks the house! Poured at a good temperature with a colossal, off-white, foamy, uber frothy, billowy head that lasts a loooong time and some clingy lace. Color is a clear honey amber with loads of small bubble trails. Aroma is spice, herbal, yeast, fruit, malt, and very complex. Flavor's similar to nose; bitter and tang are predominant while not being overdone and still, with the other qualities, still enticing. Body is lively, a tad thin, but still good. Finish is like flavor, long, and in spite of boldness, quite drinkable. World class beer! Hope to try it on draft.

Poured a beautiful golden hue with plenty of bubbles rising through the glass with a large, fluffy white head that had to be left to settle. Gorgeous to look at. The scent was mostly the Brettanomyces funk, barnyard/horse scent, but also a very slight hint of Belgian yeast and pine. The flavor again, is dominated by Brettanomyces, a sour funk, there are also slight hints of lemon and tastes of piney hops on the finish and aftertaste. It's odd, but quite pleasant to the taste. The mouthfeel is highly carbonated, but I don't feel that it detracts from the beer in any way, and rather, seems to help it. While I could due with a slight hint more malt flavors, it's still quite good and is a nice showcase of Brettanomyces and Belgian yeast which I enjoy the flavors of greatly. It's an excellent beer and I'd have it again.

A: Medium clarity, glowing golden with an apricot center. Overcarbonated, a gusher. Long lasting nice head.
S: Spicy yeast character, lots of phenolic brett funk. Smell is complex but sort of 'dull' to me.
T: My bottle was overcarbonated which I feel dulled the experience. I wanted to taste a more malt and hop, the yeast and brett phenolics really dominate this beer.

A - Fairly clear amber with an enormous head. Only fit about half the bottle into the glass even with an extremely slow pour.
S - Yeasty phenolics, light brett, spice, citrus hops, some fruit with wheat malt.
T - Citrus hops, very fruity, apple, pear, pepper spice, musty, yeast phenolics and a light brett touch.
M - Extremely carbonated, maybe a tad too much. Very dry.
D - Almost a bolder Orval without the sweet candi sugar. A tasty version of the pale with a touch of funk.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date obvious. Single purchased at Market Street Wineshop (Charlottesville, VA) for $1.89.
A: SLightly hazy apricot with massive 5-finger head that mushroom clouds with foamy light ivory colored out the top of the glass. There is some lacing near the top of the glass.
S: To me the Brett character is medium-to-strong, but I don't have a very high tolerance for that aroma. The sweaty, medicinal, phenolic character is dominant without a doubt, but there are some citrusy and piney hops notes and light caramel and cracker malt attributes.
T: The flavor is also strong on Brett character, which I usually do not enjoy very much, but this beer integrates it with the pine and grapefruit/honeysuckle/lemongrass hops character and crackery malt very nicely. There is a high degree of phenol in this beer along with pungent sour sweat but also lemon pepper and tart apple/crabapple. If I had to associate this beer with one smell it would be with souring/rotting crabapples under my grandparents' tree in their backyard. It is a very interesting flavored beer, and too Green Flash's credit, the first beer I thought of when drinking it was Orval.
M: If I have one complaint about this beer is that the feel is too slick and solvent-like. The dryness in the finish is medium, but it accentuates the somewhat solventy feel too much. The very high degree of carbonation is understandable given the desire to create a lighter feel, but I think it could be ratcheted down a notch or two.
O: I enjoyed Rayon Vert more than I thought I would as I usually don't like Brett beer very much at all. I would still pick Flying Dog Raging Bitch over this in a head-to-head of American interpretations of Belgian styles (I like the malt and hops character a little more and body of that beer a lot more), but Rayon Vert is a brew I will try again as my palate continues to develop as it does serve up a wondrous number of aromas and flavors.

Everytime I have this beer it overflows my beer glass. The beer is just so carbonated that it actually hurts the brew in my opinion. The taste is good but it's hard to judge when I only get half a glass because the other half is on the bar dripping down the barstool. The mouthfeel of this brew is just a mess.
Bottom line: good taste when you can get it into your mouth.

A- Pours a nice amber color with a huge fluffy white head that sticks around forever. B e a utiful
S- Hops then spice then the Belgian yeast character to finish. Nice combination of everything you should love in a pale ale and a Belgian.
T- Very hoppy up front but it eases into a nice malty backbone. Ends with a peppery spice and Belgian yeast flavor. A little strong with the hops but not a complaint.
M- I think this is a little too carbonated for me. Makes it to thin for me. Not a deal breaker but kind of decreases the drinkability.
Overall a pretty great beer minus the mouthfeel. Like the hoppy with Belgian character combination.

Appearance - Pours a golden amber with a large effervescent head.
Smell - Belgian yeast (brett), peach, tropical fruit, a touch of leafy hops.
Taste - Lots of flavour from the brett (e.g. peach), slight touch of leafy hops. Takes a sweeter, fruitier approach. Nice light bitterness in the finish.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with a high level of carbonation. Slightly fluffy.
Overall - An enjoyable Belgian pale ale by Green Flash. The fruitier approach worked well in their favour. Looking forward to trying more offerings from this brewery.

Green flash Rayon Vert Belgian-style Pale Ale, Green Flash Brewing, San Diego, CA. "If Green Flash were founded in historical Belgium, Rayon Vert would be our flagship brew. A bold layering of hops finds balance from traditional malts. Bottle conditioning with fresh ale yeast and Brettanomyces finishes the beer, adding a delightful effervescence, dryness and continuously evolving character. Rayon Vert IS Green Flash."ALC. by VOL. 7%.
Highly hazed, golden appearance, beautiful, gigantic white head, overflowing effervescence. Leaving loads of lace.
Aroma: laden with spice and fruit, flush with Belgian yeast character. Invigorating. Angelic. Impressive.
Taste: Ah! That's the first thought that drops into my mind, nothing but "ah!" Light -bodied, lean, but tons of hops, loads of fruity/funky/spicy yeast character. We've got peach, tangerine, orange, lemon, all ending up dryly on the tongue.
Juicy, malty, delicious. Here's a Belgian pale ale done right, one of the best American versions I've ever tasted. These guys know what they're doing!

22 oz bottle purchased from Total Wine poured into a pint glass (I know, sorry guys).
A - Bottle conditioned is no joke. Like granted I don't pour beer very well this thing practically gushed out of the bottle. Deep carrot or safety orange in the middle, peach around the edges. Tons of light, whipped, frothy head, like a steamer or egg whites. Buoyant. Chalky and cloudy as you get to the end of the bottle (obvi).
S - I think the yeast gives it a sharp, sweaty funk backed up by a light, hoppy evergreen (pine needles? who knows) with just whiff of orange (almost more like cleaner than fruit). It's pleasant. Very clear. Not so much simple or singular as it is meshed or well blended.
T -It's got a clarity and a juiciness up front, light and brightness around the edges with a sharper yeast/citrus on the swallow and a long, lingering hop finish on the roof of the mouth (for some reason it makes me think of burlap) with pleasant, restrained bitterness. Working it around brings out more of the greener flavors (pine, etc). Very subtle, almost unnoticeable malts.
M - Light to mid-range. Not quite milky, not quite orange juice. Again, airy and buoyant. Cottony.
O - A very pleasant beer balancing ease of drinking with depth and complexity of flavor. A nice bridge between hops and more wild grains, to move someone on from lighter styles such a witbiers to more interesting European ones. I really like, too, how the hops serve to accentuate and spice the other flavors (rather than overpowering them). Motion within moderation. Smooth transitions. Well crafted. Very happy.

Bottle: solid brown 650mL longneck, with an acceptable non-macro label.
Appearance: even though I poured gently, this erupted into a veritable fountain of head. Once it had settled, it had a good, hazy mid-straw colouring with a thick and creamy head.
Aroma: there is a definite funky yeast up front, with remnants of fruity hops in the background, and some earthen flavours. Quite muted for the style, probably due to the explosion of head.
Taste: this beer takes a serious dive in this department - there are some pleasant Belgian ale qualities here - Belgian yeasts, earthen and spiced flavours - but they are overpowered by a truly unpleasant and pungent off-yeasty dirty flavour coming from the head.
Aftertaste: once the head had dissipated to almost nothingness and took away that dreadful taste carried through it, this is quite a decent Belgian pale. Those flavours that came across on the nose carry through here, with Belgian yeasts taking the main stage. Much better.
Mouth feel: no complaints here - with a medium body and fine but steady carbonation.
Overall: for AU$13 (2013) a bottle, I was getting ready for a quality Belgian ale. What I got was an exploding head that tastes like off yeast and dirt, and the distinct impression that I would have been far better off with a better and far cheaper alternative such as Leffe, Grimbergen, Kwak or Gouden Carolus. A truly unimpressive beer.

Warmer ~20 minutes after removing from
fridge. Poured from bottle into snifter.
A-Amber in colour. Slightly hazy, but I think I caught a bit of the yeast in the pour? Otherwise quite clear. A very carbonated beer. Poured with quite a bit of off white head in spite of my best efforts to pour slowly. Head falls slowly leaving a wall of lacing behind.
S-immediately hit with some piney and citrusy hop aromas upon pouring into the glass. The aroma does seem restrained somehow, but not in a bad way. There are also a hint of light bready malts. As the volatile aromas dissapate you are left with a barn smell.
T-In spite of the immediacy of the hops in the aroma, the taste reveals a similarly restrained hop taste. Not terribly bitter but definitely shows an American edge to this style with some citrus hop flavours. Malts peek through at the last and balance things out nicely. I get something else at the end and I think it could be the Brett influence as it is a funky barn kind of taste.
M-smooth and even with moderate to high carbonation. Silky over the tongue and finishes very dry.
O-a wonderfully balanced beer, IMO. It just seems extremely well crafted and thought out. I'm happy I grabbed a four pack and will be back for more if the chance arises.
