An opaque black-brown color with a decent dark tan head and plenty of
lacing. The aroma brings a deep, beautiful leathery malt with charcoal-raisin
highlights. Captivating and edible. The flavor includes more charcoal malt intensity with licorice and raisin ideas. There's a bit of grassiness but malt is dominant and it's velvetty
smooth with just a hint of carbonation and a full body. A classy, big beer that
does not disappoint!

Tasted On: 01-24-2013
Freshness: Bottled on 12-06-2012, as far as I can tell
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Snifter
Purchased: Single from Frugal MacDoogal, Nashville
A: Big tan head, 2 fingers high, sits on top of this black and opaque beer. Shows good head retention and very good lacing.
S: Dark chocolate aromas feature some sweetness, plus toasted malts and coffee.
T: Taste includes bittersweet chocolate, coffee and a roasted bitterness, and earthy hops. A little on the astringent side.
M: Smooth mouthfeel of oats and a medium level of carbonation. The finish has bitterness of heavily-roasted grains.
O: Overall a good stout, but could benefit from some additional malt sweetness. I enjoyed this one better on draft as well.

12 oz bottle bottled on 12/18/12
A: Black with brown head. Very good lacing that sticks to the glass.
S:Mainly semisweet chocolate and roasted malt. Some coffee, toast, and vanilla in the background. A bit bigger would be better.
T: Taste follows the nose very closely; mainly semisweet chocolate and roasted malt. Roast approaches a bit of bitterness towards the end similar to coffee with a small hop note. Very solid, but could be a bit bigger.
M: Thick, smooth, low carbonation. Wet.
O: Straightforward imperial stout with good taste and aroma. Bigger would be better, but considering the price this is very good buy.

A: Pours out black with two fingers of fluffy caramel colored head. Very good retention with thick lacing.
S: Smells like dark chocolate, coffee, booze, with a big roasted malt backbone.
T: Dark chocolate, roasted malts, with a hint of bitterness.
M: Heavy body with medium low carbonation. Texture and look is somewhat motor-oily.
O: A very good offering. I wouldn't expect much less from Green Flash. This beer is put together very well and it fires on all cylinders for a great sensory experience.

Appearance: Pours black with deep browns in the light. Head is light tan. Drops to a spotty head with a chunky loose collar. Faint spots of lacing. Pours a bit thinner than expected. Moderate carbonation on the pour.
Smell: Lots of roasted malt character. Deeply roasted with some cocoa and a solid hit of bitter baker's chocolate. Some tiny hints of old coffee beans. Some grainy notes. Touches of citrus in the back. Not a lot of depth.
Taste: Oh hey, it's super roasted. Touches of smoke and char. Bitter chocolate and baker's chocolate. Loaded with bitter roasted malts. Some old, very old stake coffee. Touches of leather and dark plum. Some caramel malt in the back. A touch of pithy citrus with some pine needle thrown in for good measure. Intense levels of roast.
Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation on a medium body. Thinner than I expect from the style. A bit dry and bubbly.
Overall: Double your fun? I think not!
Not a bad stout, but I feel like they missed the mark a bit. Has the crazy roast profile associated with the style, but everything else felt a little light by comparison. A bigger body and smoother Mouthfeel would really push this over barely above average.

Smell: Coffee and chocolate dominant…roasted malts mixed in there as well…a very pleasant smelling beer…(4/5)
Taste: Deep Chocolate, coffee, roasted malts…there’s a dark fruit sweetness about this as well…flavor from beginning to end…balanced all around…(4/5)
Mouthfeel: Nice and fluffy carbonation forming a creamy chocolate bit of deliciousness…smooth and flavorful, there is a bit of a coffee aftertaste…(4/5)

7 month old bottle.
Pours lovely with a thick creamy light brown head and a dark body.
The smell has a lot of oat component to it with chocolate, and roasted malt.
Some hop /roasted malt bitterness up front. It has sweetness to it but is roastier than the smell would indicate with much more coffee. Chocolate and some oat. A light dark fruit flavor is in there as well.
Smooth and creamy big bodied but not all the way full. Some dryness.
Fairly straightforward and good imperial stout. Not super exciting though.

Growler into a pint. Enjoying on the evening of Alabama winning the national title. Roll tide.
A - Black hue with a thin tan head. Fair retention and lacing.
S - Chocolate, malts and a pinch of coffee.
T - Simple, nothing crazy here. Big smooth malts and roasted chocolate. Nothing complex, yet nothing sub-par.
M - Large medium body with low carbonation. Remains bold while not being creamy and overbearing.
O - Solid brew that I would like to enjoy again. Full growler fill at $17 was a bit high though...

Green Flash Double Stout has a thick, cascading, creamy, tan head, a very dark brown (essentially black) appearance, and an enormous, foamy lacing ring left on the glass. The aroma is of dark-roasted malts, oatmeal, raisin, prunes, and licorice, and the flavor is the same, with coffee and chocolate notes and a nice bitterness a the end of the sip. The alcohol is masked by the dark roastiness. Mouthfeel is medium to thick and velvety, and the finish is mostly dry, mild, and quite drinkable. Overall, this is a wonderful beer, and I am enjoying the sample.

Black with three fingers of mocha foam that dies down in a few minutes leaving a quilt of the same. Crazy lace. Smells of hops (pine, weed) then a huge malt presence. Molasses, cocoa, licorice, coffee and a bit of milk chocolate are all very strong. Flavor is sweet, coffee grounds and bitter all at once; not sure I like the juxtaposition versus a well integrated profile. Some molasses, dark figs and a little hershey syrup in there. When this beer first entered my lips, I noticed the body - it seemed thin and flat, then I gave it a light swish and some carb came out. Overall the body was poorly constructed with a lower than anticipated (even for a stout) and no body to back it up with a dry finish. Meh, has stuff going for it, but not that all impressed.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle, bottled 09/25/12.
Appearance: A very bubbly and huge head the color of dark milk chocolate. Pours a viscous dark body and leaves huge rings all the way down.
Smell: Milky chocolate, cocoa, fudge, very nice.
Taste: Big on the milk chocolate, leans a little to dark, a nice espresso finish that has a nutty aspect to it. Cocoa powder as well as a long roasted finish. Tastes real.
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, creamy, good long presence.
Overall: A real nice stout that doesn't reinvent anything but is solid nonetheless.

Pours black with a really nice brown head which leaves some wonderful lacing. The smell is fairly light and mostly of darker roasted malts and some hints of vanilla jumping out at me. The taste has more kick with dark chocolate and the roasted malts being the backbone with a lingering bite from the subtle hopping. The mouthfeel is rich and creamy excellent for the style and it has a nice drinkability to it. Not as good as the IPA's from Green Flash but a solid offering.

Pours a hazy dark brown with two fingers thick dense tan head, settles slowly to a thin ring, leaving a spray of lace on the glass. Smell: toasted and buttered dark bread, black plum, moderate roast, earthy, hint of wood smoke. Taste: bready, plum, maybe fig, mild roast, caramel, hopping is earthy, mildly grassy and citric. Feel is quite creamy, finishing drying with light residual sweetness. This is odd to review. Enjoyable beer, but not an impy stout.

This is a decent strong stout, a bit simple and devoid of complexity, especially for being as strong and heavy as it is.
Black, it has a big brown head.
Aroma is chocolate, hint of coffee, wet earth and bark, hint of winy prunes. Aroma is rich, full, nice, soft.
Taste is full and strong but simple and lacking in complexity. It is creamy, bittersweet, rich chocolate with hint of coffee, brandied prunes and wet singed leaves. It has a lingering burnt-leaf bitterness at finish. There is really nothing else. Compared to Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, for example that beer is far more complex and interesting and well-rounded than this on comparable (in fact slightly lower) abv. This has strong roasty-chocolatey elements but really nothing else.

Large dark tan head on a jet black body. Aroma of vanilla, roasted malts, and milk chocolate. Flavors of roasted malts, vanilla, both milk and dark chocolate, hint of pine hops, raisin and coffee. Very smooth and creamy with light to moderate carbonation. Overall this one is complex, very clean tasting with a mouthfeel making it incredibly enjoyable and easy to drink.

Shade above black with an impressive two finger high mocha head. Good retention and leaves a beautiful pattern of lacing behind on the glass.
Roasted malts with a good amount of milk chocolate, licorice, plums, raisin and burnt wood. Little bit of a herbal hop profile that further brings out the dark fruit and sweetness.
Deep sweet roasted malt with a really big chocolate profile, fudge and dark chocolate bars, glimpses of coffee grounds, smoke, candied fruit, licorice and grassy hops. Sticky and a touch smoky and acidic on the finish.
Medium body for a stout, sticky with adequate carbonation, well hidden alcohol and very smooth.
Terrific stout, sweet dessert profile that pairs wonderfully with chocolate. Very well integrated and executed by Green Flash. Creamy mouthfeel and a treat to drink.

a year old bottle.. a deep brown pour with 2 fingers of tan head which caused some excellent lacing. smells of chocolate milk, toasted oats, a sweet grape musky smell... the taste is a subtle blend of vanilla, toffee and chocolate, bitter toasted grains in the background with a tobacco-like aftertaste. medium body, low carbonation and very creamy!
this is a delicious strong stout with a rich creaminess to it that makes it a perfect dessert beer. really enjoyable after a year of aging.

Into a chalice (I don't normally only pour Double Stouts in chalices without a pint or nonic testing, but I guess there's a first time for everything, right?):
A: pitch black colored body that leaves a large foamy dark tan colored head leaving some nice lumpy valleys inside the head. Thick beautiful ringy lacing graces the sides of the chalice.
S: smokey coffee and dark chocolate
T: takes those smells and adds a nice flavorful charcoal.
M: medium with a thick creamy coating around the tongue. Though a fairly high ABV, the alcohol is well hidden.
O: this is good for its style and its spectacular for me. I would definitely come back to this, especially to have in the other glasses

Served in a snifter
A- pours opaque black, dark as night. Thick looking pour with a creamy dark tan head and patches of lace. This is about as dark as they come.
S- smoky campfire, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, and charcoal.
T- dark and delicious, dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, bitter-sweet chocolate, charred, smoked meat, finishes with a bit of piney hop bitterness.
M- full bodied with light carbonation, thick mouthfeel finishes a bit creamy, just enough warmth from the booze
O- this is one dark and smoky stout. Complex flavors but well balanced throughout, this one is definitely a sipper. Great pick for a cold December night.

A: Pitch-black with a huge fluffy coffee-colored head that sticks around well and leaves behind beautiful lacing on the glass. Pretty much the perfect stout pour.
S: Surprisingly, lots of hops for a big stout like this. Also, some dark fruits, licorice, a bit of coffee and chocolate.
T/M: Sweet, smooth chocolate and licorice up front, followed by somewhat more bitter coffee and subdued hoppy flavors. Rich and flavorful. Slightly thin body for a stout, just moderate.
O: A pretty good double stout with plenty of nice coffee and chocolate flavor.

Review #3 for those keeping track at home.
12oz bottle from local bevy poured into Lawson's Tulip 11/29/12
A: Black. Awesome two finger beige head.
S: Mmmm. This smells really tasty. Coffee, cappucino. Slight chocolate and hops too.
T: Yeah! Cappucino. Slightly bitter since it was probably a tad on the cold side when poured but I couldn't wait any longer. As it warmed, the chocolate came through nicely on the finish and some of the bitterness disapperared.
M: Smooth. It's not chewy or super heavy but it's not too thin either.
O: Wow. Really nice balanced stout. I was suprised by this one so I thought I should review it. It's one of the better balanced stouts I've had recently. Considering picking up a 4 pack now.

A: Blackish/brown with a tan half finger head that fizzles to tiny bubbles. Bulky lacing.
S: Coffee, chocolate, licorice.
T: Follows nose. Very smooth and sweet. Bold. Even better as it warms.
M: Medium to heavy. Frothy carbonation.
O: One of the better stouts I've tried. Another winner from Green Flash.
