We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

This an undated bomber from around 2007-2008 (they haven't used this old label since that period). Poured into a tulip glass.
Appearance is inky - very dark brown, bordering on black, with a thin layer of dark tan head. Just a little bit of occasional lace. 8.8% ABV isn't that big for an imperial stout these days, and I've seen ones with much higher alcohol content retain a nicer head. That's basically the only strike against this beer. Not a big deal.
Smell is heavenly. The most forward note is dark fruits, like prune and raisin, which is more reminiscent of a quad than a stout. Behind that is burnt sugar, molasses, coffee, milk chocolate and a slight whiff of bourbon.
That very concentrated "inkiness" carries through to the palate. Espresso, dark chocolate, oats and bitter black malts dominate, with a tinge of green raisin and a cool finish that can probably be attributed to the hops and the booze. Nice roasty/bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel starts off thin, but quickly rounds out and becomes velvety with a surprising amount of soft, prickly carbonation, considering this one's age.
Overall, this beer might have seen better days in terms of look and feel, but the flavor is mostly all there. The nose is downright sexy. The beer is not too sweet and finishes rather dry. It would probably make for a nice complement to a really rich, sweet desert like cheesecake.

1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.8%. Pitch black colour, big brown head. Nice aroma of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Rich malty flavour with roasty notes, strong coffee and dark bitter chocolate, maybe a hint of liquorice too. Bitter aftertaste. The alcohol is well hidden.

From notes 11/10/13: Pours such a clear deep brown that it appears ink black until light is passed through it. The pour produces 1.5 fingers of frothy, short-lived, mocha head that leaves only tiny webs and motes of lace. Aroma is cocoa and bittersweet chocolate (Hershey's chocolate syrup like), caramel, creamed coffee, smoke, anise and alcohol. Taste starts as a bittersweet balance of burnt roasted malts, chocolate, creamed coffee and finishes with light but easily discernible alcohol spice in a developing bitterness that becomes the dominating factor in the roasted, slightly burnt, chocolatey aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with light carbonation, alcohol warmth and spiciness, silky and chewy.

Unknown vintage; drank 1/3/16 @ the Yarchives.
Black/brown appearance.
A rough pour yielded a HUGE tan head (careful pouring!); a curtain of frothy lace.
Fresh earth, cream & faint raspberry notes in the nose.
Creamy medium thick mouthfeel.
Bakers chocolate & cream flavors up front; raspberry notes on the finish.
A mix of RIS & sweet stout attributes with nice raspberry accents; this served me well on a cold January night.

L) Pours an oily black with a lovely tan head. Some lacing and acceptable head retention.
S) Strong notes of rich chocolate, roasted coffee, and dark toffee. There is a lovely candied dark fruit note that balances out with the more "savory" flavors as well.
T) Everything in the nose makes an appearance in the flavor profile. The coffee is especially strong on the finish, there is an incredibly bitter espresso aftertaste that dangerously treads the line between pleasant and unpleasant.
F) Very silk with medium-low carbonation. A pleasure to sip on.
O) I would recommend this to someone who hasn't had it, a great and unique representation of the style.

It has a pitch black colored body that leaves a large foamy dark tan colored head leaving some nice lumpy valleys inside the head. Thick beautiful ringy lacing graces the sides of the chalice. The aroma has a smoky coffee and dark chocolate and the taste takes those smells and adds a nice flavorful charcoal. On the palate, hmmm.... kinda at a medium sort of body - with a thick creamy coating around the tongue. Though a fairly high ABV, the alcohol is well hidden. Overall, this is good for its style and its spectacular for me. I would definitely come back to this.

Thick black body that produces a rich brown head upon the pour, fades to a thick ring and thin covering. Nose offers coffee and dark chocolate, a bit of sweet caramel malts, vanilla, smoke and barbeque. The flavor is noticeably sweeter, adding strawberry and creamy lactose to all the chocolate, roastiness, and coffee going on. It verges on Neapolitan flavors. Body is thick, rich, creamy, and overall indulgent. Fine prickles of carbonation hit the tongue through the sticky body.
This was a great stout, made all the more impressive by its availability. Rich flavors of chocolate and coffee were tempered by the sweetness, and the mysterious addition of strawberry only helped. Body was incredible. This will be revisited.
