APPEARANCE: Crystal clear and orange in color, the West Coast IPA develops a big, bubbly white head. It settles fairly quickly into about a half-inch cap where it remains for a few minutes. This beer has a very DIPA-like look. Lacing was disappointing.

SMELL: A strong grassy aroma is noticeable as soon as the cap is popped. Some floral notes linger behind it along with a nice grapefruit smell that alerts the palate that it is in for an intense hop experience.

TASTE: This is an intense IPA with all 95 IBUs present. The grass follows the nose and makes for a very pungent base. Pine and grapefruit follow the grassy lead and give way to some sweeter floral flavors towards the middle of the sip. The pine gradually becomes more pronounced as the beer warms and as the Alstrom Brothers once noted, a hint of mint is also present. The finish reverts back to big hops and dries out the palate with a nice bitterness. This is a hugely hoppy beer with just the right touch of balance.

MOUTHFEEL: Despite being a very bitter beer a couple brief flashes of malt serve to brighten it up. Big bodied, this Green Flash effort has an aggressive and very sparkly carbonation that does an excellent job scrubbing the palate with each sip.

OVERALL: This really seems like it belongs in the same category as Stone Ruination. That said, this one is not nearly as close to the edge of “too hoppy” as the Ruination. There is a little more balance, making the West Coast IPA a bit more drinkable. A hop head’s dream, it pairs very nicely with Point Reyes Blue Cheese. The tangy and sweeter blue is the perfect complement to this brew.

Pours a medium orange-amber color. Medium white head with good retention and lacing. Huge aroma of citrus, floral and piney hops and a mild dose of yeast. Flavor has just enough malt backbone to balance the big hops. Lots of grapefruit and floral with a hint of pine. Medium mouthfeel and slightly dry finish. The glass I had was very good and it was past its prime. This stuff must be phenomenal when it's fresh.
