On tap at Cottonwood in Houston, TX
A: Pours a dark brown/ruby red color. A one finger white head forms with good retention. That gently recedes and leaves patchy lace on the glass.
S: Sweet malt up front and center. Dark fruits of cherries and plums. One dimensional, but still enjoyable.
T: Again, this is one dimensional. Sweet malt. Sugary, caramel, almost brown sugar like. Dark fruits of cherries and plums.
M/D: A full body that is a bit syrupy. Low to medium carbonation. Though smooth. A big beer, and a nice sipper. Though one is enough in a sitting.
Sweetness is the main show here, which is par for the coarse for an American interpretation of the style. The great toasted, bready malt that gives the German versions great depth is missing here. Though still enjoyable and worth a try. Just not in the top tier for the style.

Not even close to style, this disaster had a soapy, medicinal quiality that forced me to return it to the barmaid for immediate disposal. There is no doppelbock maltiness and viscosity. There is no sweet nose and luscious caramel. Unclean line or glass? Maybe, but to call this a doppelbock is simply innaccurate. A disappointment.

They had this on tap at dinner so ordered it up. Arrived in a 14oz curvy glass. Color is dark brown, near opaque, but slightly translucent with a 1 finger tan head. Smell is very malty. Taste is sweet up front with a tangy hop flavor following and then a transition to a dry bitter and chaulky semi-sweet chocolate. Mouthfeel is excellent, heavy and smooth. Went great with my steak. This one is a keeper.

On tap at the Deep Ellum 1st Anniversary Party. Served in a special Pollenator snifter.
The beer pours a clear medium to dark brown color with a small off-white head. The aroma is very sweet with a good dose of toffee and biscuit malt notes. The flavor is not up to par with the aroma. I get the toffee and biscuit from the aroma, but there is also something off in the flavor. It is a little bit hard to pinpoint exactly what the off flavor is, but it is a little bit metallic and also has some vegetable notes. As I drank more of the beer, the off notes got stronger and stronger and eventually resulted in me pouring the beer our. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I really wanted this beer to be good, but something was off in this batch. Hopefully if it is brewed again it will be better.
