On tap at the Deep Ellum First Anniversary Party.
The beer pours a brown color with a white head. The aroma is classic German lager, with some toffee and biscuit malt. The flavor is about what I expected. I get a lot of clean malt notes, as well as a lightest hint of grapes. There caramel and toffee notes are what comes through the strongest, as well as a hint of grass and earth. Medium carbonation and thin mouthfeel.

On tap at Down House in Houston, TX. This one is made with a heated stone/Steinbier method that is not commonly used, buy American breweries anyway. The only other time I have come across this in the States is with the Boscos brewpub chain.
A: Pours a dark red/ruby/brown color. A two finger white head forms with good retention. Sticky lace is left behind.
S: Not a lot in the nose. At first a grassy and citrus hop burst. That quickly fades and toasted malt and caramel come out that are nice for the season.
T: Warm and comforting toasted malt, caramel sweetness, bread/biscuit flavors. Light hops. If there was a comfort food equivalent of beer, this would be it. If that makes any sense.
M/D; A medium body with good carbonation. Crisp and smooth at the same time. This is enjoyable, but I wish the alcohol was a little less. The 7+ ABV sneaks up on you.
This is really interesting and unique. Something I really enjoyed and would come back to. Still not among my favorites of Deep Ellum, but so what. Enjoy something unique when you come across this.
