SweetWater Dank Tank Ghoulash pours a deep dark brown, with a slight bit of transparency when held up to a light. The foamy, creamed coffee color head has good retention.

The smell has strong grapefruit aromas with subtle notes of peach candy and SweetTarts. Surprisingly there is little to no malt character.

Its taste is big but amazingly balanced, especially for SweetWater (which tpically fits into the aggressive hoppiness character related to West Coast breweries). The beer begins with fruity characters similar to the nose. It then flows nicely, as the midpalate builds into a bigger finish consisting of dark malty flavoras and bitterness.

The mouthfeel is heavy, but the carbonation was lacking for the style.

Overall, this was a pleasant surprise from SweetWater. Although their typically very hoppy beers are some of my favorites, this beer’s malt bill created an amazingly big but just as amazingly balanced beer. This one is definitely worth a try.

1 pint 6oz bottle
Served in a pint glass

A - It pours very dark, letting no light through. It is topped with three inches of mocha head. It looks like a stout.

S - The aroma is a mixture chocolate and hints of coffee with citrus featuring grapefruit.

T - I get some of that roasted malt up front. The bitterness of the hops creeps in the more I drink. I get a combination of black coffee and grapefruit.

M - Full and creamy

O - This is a very enjoyable beer. Between the wonderful combination of aromas and flavors to the thick and creamy mouthfeel to the ABV, I thoroughly relished this experience.

Thanks to Nashvillain for the bottle.

Appearance: Deep dark brown. Doesn't pretend to be black, but it's dark. Head is a very light khaki. Thin cap. Creamy touches of head. Some lacing. Relatively clear.

Smell: Pine, chocolate, and something earthy. Grass, grapefruit, and more. It's a hop amalgam. Malts run a little sweet with a touch, and the faintest, of burnt malts. Cocoa and some spent coffee grinds. A little resinous and dank in good measure. Very earthy. Almost a touch of liqueur, that is to say sweet booze.

Taste: Burnt sweetness. Layers of chocolate. I'm talking straight bitter cocoa and a nice punch of dark chocolate sweetness. Very subdued. Some notes of char on the back. Hops are in good balance (I'm attributing part of that to the age of the bottle). Nice herbal and pine flavors. Some citrus and that earthy aroma comes through on the taste as well.

Mouthfeel: Smooth with a dry finish. Body comes out a little heavier than expected treading a heavier line of moderate. Carbonation is decent.

Overall: Incredibly drinkable. Lots of flavor in the right places. Nicely complex in that kitchen sink kind of way. Too bad it's not in regular rotation. A great take on the style.

pour is black with no head. smells very hoppy, pine and medicinal. Hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is loaded with powdered chocolate. Hops really balance out the sweetness, making it a very drinkable. very sweet, but finshes dry.

Finish is clean, but loaded with dried hops.
