I got one of these way back in the day, like literally around a decade ago as part of one of my first trade ever, as an extra. Sat on it for years waiting to drink it w a Steelers buddy but he stopped leaving the house for almost anything but work or tball practice, so I decided for NYE 2018 to crack this one open.

Pours dark brown/black, good 3/4" beige head, dense, great retention. Shit, for being around 8 years old, this looks great and as if it hasn't lost an iota of carbonation. Notes of chocolate malt, vanilla and dark fruit on the nose.

Taste wise, there is even greater dark fruit impressions similar to a Baltic Porter or Russian Imperial Stout. Perhaps this is the slightly negative effect of unintended aging for such a duration. Twas in an actual cellar at least. Any aspect of vanilla loses out in the mouth feel. Decent scorched malt roastiness to it though. Might be a tad more bitter than desired. I legit believe this was slightly better years ago, that is on me.

"Soup or Bowl X, 1976: Rodger the Dodger and his Imperial Porter bone offense didn't stand a bat wing's chance, once we dipped our Nicaraguan bean sack through his face mask! We blindsided his 8.5% Alc/Vol jock strap back to the fields to pick more beans, resulting in this Immaculate con-Catch-tion of intense forearm shivers of chocolate malt, a body like the Bus and blitzes of gridiron hops, all clotheslined by intense coffee overtones. So good that you'll need your terrible towel to wipe the tears." Mean Joe Bean is brewed in the style of an American Imperial Porter with added coffee beans. Released as a one time limited batch in February 2011.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter. Served north of 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy mocha brown head over a very dark, near black body. Retention is slightly above average with no lacing. Surface cover is thin and patchy. Nice body tone (thoroughly dark), but head quality is not at it's best. 3.5

(Smell) Aroma has soured significantly. Wine-like fruity tartness, very faint traces of black patent malt, chocolate malt and vanilla, although all pale in comparison to the initial yeast character. Not an offensive aroma, but certainly not what the brewery intended the beer to smell like. 3

(Taste) Sweet oatmeal and cream front with a subtle cocoa and faint black malt finish. Balance is sweet over bitter with little hop presence, although some mild tartness keeps the beer from being overly saccharine. Flavor is an improvement over the aroma, with many more "porter-like" qualities retained. Sourness is not nearly as intense at this stage as I anticipated it may be, but is detectable especially up front and a little less throughout. A bit sweet in body and simple for my tastes, the coffee bean presence had expectedly vanished, but it doesn't impact the flavor negatively in any way- it seems to be able to hold up well enough on it's own. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Mild silky slickness with a touch of cream and a very low level of carbonation. Sticky, moist finish. Body is medium-high for porters and high overall. Alcohol presence is relatively low, masked by the sweetness. Carbonation is a bit too low resulting in a rather muted mouthfeel for a heavily-bodied beer. A creamier texture would have been ideal at this stage of the beer's life although a coffee-led black coffee with no sugar may have benefited from a crisper texture. Either way, it's in between either value at its current stage and could benefit from activity either way. 3.5

(Overall) This beer has held up relatively well for being nearly two years old, but expectedly has some aging quantities, including an off-putting thin and tart nose, a lack of coffee beans and a simple, heavy body with a very quiet carbonation presence. Altogether it's much better than I thought it may be at it's age, but I expect that it was a much better beer at a younger age. If you should somehow stumble upon this beer in the near future, beware the possibility that you may not enjoy the way this coffee porter has aged. A full, robust body has kept this beer from completely drying out but most of the subtleties have vanished with the time. 3.5

Appearance: Pours a deep dark brown color with about 1/4" of khaki head. Retention is okay. Lacing reduces to a ring around the edge of the glass. Lacing is barely existent.

Smell: Smells of some roast, pretty weak at this point. Maybe a hint of herbal hops. No coffee.

Taste: Some roast is there on the palate, maybe a hint of cocoa powder. Again, no coffee apparent. Overall, pretty weak flavor but not offensive.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Mouthfeel is thin. About the right amount of carbonation. Overall, this one is past its prime by a ways and should have been drank long ago. Weak in flavor and in feel.
