Appearance- Black, without any light around the edges of the glass. Thin tan head that dissipated quickly into a thin ring around the edges of the glass

Smell- Deep, roasty chocolate with a dark fruit note as well, a touch of coffee and licorice. The coffee comes out a bit more as it warms up

Taste- Much more licorice than the nose suggests with lots of roasted chocolate, finishes with a very dark, bitter cocoa. A little bit of a fruitiness as well. After taste is bitter and roasty

Mouthfeel- Medium body with good carbonation. Finishes pretty dry

Overall- Good stuff, an enjoyable RIS from a nice local brewery

Tried this on tap at Mirabelle Tavern in Stony Brook. I have to say I enjoyed this one. The flavor and mouthfeel are a little thin, but then again Russian Imperial Stouts aren't as toasty and creamy as other American Imperial Stouts. This is a poor mans Old Rasputin, and there is nothing wrong with that. A tasty choice from a local brewery.

This beer looks great. It has an excellent nose. The flavor profile is excellent. Nice robust tones with a slight sweet tone that seems like sweet berries. (You know what I mean, I'm sure.) Mild roasted thing going on here. I like this. And for the price point, you can't beat it! I wish I had gotten more of these to share while I was in NYC. Would have been a nice sleeper to send on my next trade.

Bought a 4pk at Growler & Gill in Nanuet NY the other day. Been looking forward to trying this for a while now since I've been lucky enough to hang with Paul and sample some of his fantastic homebrews prior to him getting involved with this commercial venture.

Appearance: Pours black, opaque, lifeless (like doll's eyes), with a 1 finger khaki crown that shows moderate retention and lace.

Smell: Nice array of dark malts, roasted grains, almost a hint of lightly charred barrel, and a dash of ashy black patent.

Taste: Same as the nose. This is very similar to Breakfast Stout, just without coffee and with a lower level of hops.

Mouthfeel: On the full side of medium bodied with a nice level of soft moderate carbonation.

Overall: A solid stout that lacks a bit of "imperialness" mainly in mouthfeel. Well balanced flavors. I'd buy this again!

A: The beer is jet black in color and has some carbonation visible near the sides of the glass. It poured with a half finger high dark tan head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center of the glass, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides.
S: Aromas of chocolate malts and coffee beans are present in the nose along with hints of roasted malts.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste as flavors of chocolate coated coffee beans along some associated bitterness and contrasting hints of roasted malts and bits of sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes like a hybrid between an American Stout and a Russian Imperial Stout but is nonetheless rather easy to drink and quite tasty—it would definitely make for a good choice for a breakfast beer. The alcohol is very well hidden from the taste.

From 02/28/13 notes. I picked this up the day before at Citu Swiggers for $2.49/bottle. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a snifter.

a - Pours a deep brown, almost black color, with two inches of very dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks thick and like a fantastic big RIS.

s - Smells of cocoa, coffee, roasted malts, toasted malts, vanilla, cream, burnt malts, bitter chocolate, bready malts. Really nice nose with a lot of sweet cocoa and coffee up front. Loving the nose a lot.

t - Tastes of cocoa, roasted malts, bitter chocolate, coffee, burnt malts, espresso, light dark fruits, light vanilla, and light alcohol. A little more bitter chocolate here and alittle less sweet than the nose, but still really nice.

m - Medium to full bodied stout and moderate to high carbonation. Body is pretty thick and smooth and no real heat form the high ABV. Only thin keeping this from being great in the mouthfeel is that it is a little bit overcarbonated, otherwise great.

o - Overall I had heard good things about this one and it lived up to the hype; I thought it was a great RIS. The nose is awesome with lots of cocoa, coffee, and vanilla, and the taste is great too. Glad I bought another bottle of this one and would definitely pick it up again.
