Notes:
A Silver Medal winner in Strong Ales at the 1996 Great American Beer Festival. This Irish-style strong ale is brewed with a secret blend of five imported specialty malts. Not too hoppy in order to emphasize the complex malt flavor and fruity aroma.

Drank this at BJ's Restaurant and Brewery in Temple, Texas on New Year's Day. From the tap...
Appearance - Arrived with little to no head that quickly faded away....nice lace on the sides of the glass, though, that maintained as I drank it. Red, amber color, but still fairly transparent. Appears to be slightly carbonated.
Smell - Very difficult to discern; after multiple attempts by myself (and my wife!) we determined that it smells sweet, with slight hops, but we cannot identify any specific components.
Taste - Surprised at the bold taste after no success on the smell test. Very pleased with the taste; malty, slightly fruity (can't identify the fruit, though). Not very hoppy.
Mouthfeel - Pleasant, easy on the palate; not over-carbonated; smooth; comfortable.
Overall - Really enjoyed this red ale; the strong-bodied taste is a surprise after minimal odor; very nice red ale; would definitely drink this beer again; I can understand the fairly high reviews. Would have liked to see more head (but the lack of it might have been due to a weak pour). Recommend this beer.

At Greenwood, Indiana location... poured an excellent deep red with wonderful head and very nice lacing. Huge deep malt scent with a nice tang in the nose. Wonderfully deep malty scent, with a great tang, and hints of chocolate. Very smooth, rich and deep, with no hint of the relatively high ABV. My favorite at BJ's.

On tap at BJ's in Valencia, CA.
Pours a clear light brownish-red with an off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and some slight fruity aromas. Taste is the same with an alcohol kick on the finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp on the mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good red ale but like the Nutty Brewnette the alcohol on the finish is slightly jarring.

As usual, bj's makes an impressive looking beer, nice cedar red appearance, substantial clarity, nice off white head on it. Aroma was too alcohol forward, was hoping for some hop aroma here, but whatever you can pick up hopwise, is minimal at best, the heavy typical red malt aroma plays second fiddle to alcohol.
Remnants of caramel, vivid application of alcohol, missing application of hops. Somewhat balanced, bitterness not out of whack, no real off flavors other than the pronounced whisp of alcohol.
Would like them find a hop bill similar to their pihrana pale substituted for this beer.

A - Pours as you would expect, a rather dark red, small, off-white head that leaves a bit of lacing.
S - Sweet malt, caramel, some toffee, a hint of hazelnut and dark fruit.
T - Very sweet. There's actually quite a bit of a fruit taste, raisins and even a bit of apple. Fades into some toffee and hazelnut. Very nutty on the end.
M - Incredibly smooth. The alcohol hidden very well. Leaves the mouth a bit sticky.
Overall - I thought this was a decent beer. It was on the verge of being a little too sweet, but turned out pretty well.
