Sea Dog Steak and Ale is located on the east side of Northborough on Route 20 in a small shopping plaza.
Atmosphere is upscale and split, with two different entrance doors side by side, to a dining area on the left and bar on the right. Overall it has a very modern mildly industrial feel with lots of very bright woods and metal. My wife commented upon her visit that it reminded her of a hotel bar. The dining area consists of booths along the wall and tables in the middle. A large U shaped bar, with a bunch of smaller tables on all sides, is on the right side of the restaurant. The bar area features lots of flat screen TV’s above the bar always tuned to “the game” right next to the hanging Seadog mugs for mug club members. Overall the bar seems to being trying to capture an upscale sports type crowd, yet at the same time feels just right for casual jeans and T-shirt dining as well.
Since this isn’t a Seadog “Brewpub”, just a Seadog restaurant featuring their beer; Beer selection is limited to only eight Sea Dog beers on tap and one recently added cask engine. The tap selection is exclusively SeaDog; blueberry, hazelnut, stout, a seasonal offering, etc. Although I’m not a fanatic for their normal beers, the tap list so far has featured at least one limited edition “Craft” beer, including the XXXX IPA on my first few visits, and more recently a higher octane pseudo wild yeast “Smashed Blueberry” ale on tap then cask. These beers alone make me want to come back over and over again.
The bottle list includes a few more Seadog beers, and small selection of your typical macros. They also have a full liquor bar and wine as well.
Food is comfort gastro pub/steak house but with more of an upscale flair. All your normal burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, steaks, larger entrees, seafood, steaks and appetizers. The Asian spring rolls were fantastic, and all the sandwiches I’ve had so far have been great. Like I said, the food really aims for more an upscale/refined sort of slant. Tempura and lobster mashed potatoes, along with steak and fine seafood dishes. It definitely isn’t just a “pub”.
There’s just something this place that I really like. It is in no way a beer mecca, but I keep coming back. Beer is solid, the food (although a bit pricey) is better than good, and the atmosphere is nice. I’m mostly a lunch person, so I’ve never seen this place packed, but have heard it can get busy in the evenings or weekends. Overall it’s a nice addition to Metrowest. It’s not going to replace my Horseshoe pub anytime soon, but I have new alternative.
