on-tape - thanks for the free pour boys!!!

This is a hefe basically. Big yeasty belgian notes, but mostly the typical bubblegum, banana, etc.

I liked it

Poured into a pint glass

Appearance - Dark Yellow with some carbonated bubbles along the sides. There's some mild cloudiness and the 2 finger head is rather soapy but has some surprisingly excellent retention. Lacing is also on the mild side, but it's sticky nonetheless

Smell - Bubblegum, Bananas, Cloves, Cotton Candy, Yeasts, Wheat, and Malts. For a Saison, this is very sweet smelling but pleasent; Almost like a desert beer.

Taste - Cloves, Bubblegum, Yeasts, Wheat, Barley and Malts. Again, this is a very sweet tasting Saison with it's Hefe-Cloves and sweetness. Add that in with the Wheat flavor and you get a very sweet and summery ale.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied and some mild carbonation. Feels surprisingly crisp and it's very easy to drink. Perhaps a bit too easy to drink, but I am one not to complain about this.

Overall - Since this is my first offering from Lucid, I have to say I'm very impressed by Summertide. It's got rich flavors and some excellent drinkability to back it up. Hopefully the other offerings they have will be just as good as this. With all the breweries popping up all around Minnesota, I can only hope that the quality gets even better than it already is.

Tasted 7 September 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours a medium-pale straw yellow. Mostly clear, just a bit of fuzz from the yeast at the bottom of the bottle. One finger of white head, okay retention and lacing.

Smell is nice, but it's weird for the style. As it says on the label, banana and clove come through. This is a saison? Smells like a hefeweizen. A bit of spice is the only sign of a saison.

Taste is at least half in line with the style. Slightly funky, slightly spicy, both of those mostly in the back-end. Front still feels like a hefe - yeast-forward, banana-fruity. Odd, but not bad.

Mouthfeel is a bit flat. Medium-light body, feels slick, in a way that's again sorta odd for the style.

This beer is weird. Did they use a yeast that's usually used for hefeweizens? Certainly doesn't strike me as saison, though it's tasty enough.

Cloudy, pale golden coloring, slim, white head, settles to a taut ring.

Belgian yeast funks it forward in the aroma, wheat detected, too, and then citrus and spice. Nice enough.

Taste: soft, mellow, smooth…to a point. There's something off, here, something from the yeast, perhaps, that just throws the flavor in an unpleasant way. Further in, …not that unpleasant, just off. Okay, another couple sips, and it's unpleasantly off, again.

Let's look at the label, for fun: " Lucid Summertide Saison Ale, 5.5% Alc./Vol., The unique yeast in Summertide gives this beer a fruity, peppery aroma and flavor with notes of banana, bubblegum, and cloves. No spices were added to this beer! Smooth and balanced this Belgian-style beer is perfect for the season." Brewed and bottled by Lucid Brewing, Minnetonka, MN."

Isn't banana and clove mainly a hefe wizen thing? I can't remember getting much banana from a true saison. And bubblegum? Always with the bubblegum! Fruit and pepper, yeah, I'll give it that. This ought to be leaner, crisper, and brighter. Instead it's rather dank, dense, and murky. Not what I look for in a summer saison.

Sorry, guys, maybe next time.

Saison/Farmhouse Ale. Catagorically speaking a strange beast. Really a family of Belgian and Belgian inspired beers. Saison Dupont is probably the best known commercial example, with it's hoppy nose, strange peppercorn yeast character and bone dry, bitter finish. A beer does not need to be a Saison Dupont clone to be a saison though, and Summertide is no Dupont clone. It is however pretty good. Hazy orange colour. Bubblegum, clove, mild banana aroma. Vaguely reminiscent of a German Hefeweizen. As the aroma is very yeast driven, so to is the flavour. Here, the beer seems more typical of a Saison. Peppercorn, clove, floral hops and slight banana. A touch sweet, but it has just enough bitterness to balance. Perhaps a bit fuller bodied than I would care for, carbonation seems right. Overall though, this is a nice beer. Lots going on, certainly interesting and enjoyable.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and somewhat cloudy pale golden orange with lots of rising bubbles. Huge six finger white head with good retention. leaves a lot of lacing clumps around the glass.

Smell: A nice fruity and spicy aroma. Good scent of Belgian yeast with some clove and pepper spices. Hints of citrus esters with orange and lemon zest. Hints of banana, pear, apple, and bubblegum along with a little coriander. Some wheat and pale malts round it out. Solid aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints, a nice mix of spicy yeast, fruits, and malt. Spicy Belgian yeast up front with notes of clove, pepper, and coriander. Good mix of fruit esters with notes of banana, apple, pear, bubblegum, and citrus orange and lemon zest. Some pale malts and wheat add a little bready character. Good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and somewhat juicy. Sweet but finishes somewhat dry.

Overall: A pretty nice take on a Saison. Spicy and a nice mix of fruits that avoids becoming cloying with the sweetness.

Lucid Summertide was featured as Kevin's Keg Choice at Tiffany's in St. Paul a couple of days ago. I appreciated the opportunity to try it.

Appearance: Cloudy yellow with 3/4" of foam. Quite a bit of lacing. Didn't see a lot of carbonation.
Smell: Tons of banana and some yeast like the smell rising bread. Some flowery, spicy notes. Reminded me of carnations. Overall, a very fresh smell.
Taste: Belgian banana taste was dominant, but there was a bit of spice, perhaps cloves. Very subdued hops presence. Lovely blend of flavors.
Mouthfeel: Sparkly, effervescent, light mouthfeel with a spicy finish.
Drinkability: Very drinkable and very refreshing.

No freshness dating

A= Pours a hazy pale yellow color with a thick white finger of head on it that keeps steady retention and lacing.

S= Smells bubblegummy with a nice spicy yeast character. A little coriander and some sort of clove and bannana mix. The dominate character is definitally spicy yeast.

T= The taste follows suit. Bubblegum up front with a clove bannana mix to follow. The finish is a little sweet for a saison in my opinion but not totally bad.

M= A little low on the carbonation for a saison.

O= Not bad. The camo from lucid disappointed me to be honest. A lot of these new Minnesota breweries I have written off because of bad beer. This isn't a bad beer. Saison with a sort of American twist I would say. A little sweet on the finish and a little light on the carbonation but to be honest it works. Lucid Camo doesn't follow style and neither does this. Lucid is transending style guidelines and in this case it works.
