Notes:
Scarlet Fire is an Irish/American style Red Ale. The name is a reference to the playful, improvisational transitions between Grateful Dead songs Scarlet Begonias and Fire on the Mountain. Great balance of malt sweetness from caramel malt and subtle toasty notes from roasted barley. Brewed withj American Ale yeast, and East Kent Golding hops, it pays tribute to it's heritage as an Irish Red Ale.

On-tap at Park Tavern - Rosemont, IL, served ice cold (too cold) in a shaker pint, it took forever to warm up enough to get any sort of aroma. It poured a deep red with a beige head, that actually had smaller bubbles in a tighter formation. Excellent head retention as well. Aromas were weak at first, but came through as bready caramel malt and earthy hops. Tastes are earthy, bready, dry, rye bread crust, slight nuttiness, slight pine on the finish; malty but hop bitterness balances nicely. Very creamy and smooth mouth-feel with nice carbonation. Overall, pleasant American Red Ale reminiscent of a dryer Irish Red but with a more bolder hop profile.

Had on tap at the new Park Tavern in Rosemont. Served in a shaker pint.

A: Pours a semi dark brown color, a little darker than expected. A thin, off-white head forms on the pour and recedes a thin ring.

S: Toffee malts and slightly smoky. There isn't much in the hop department, but there is some subtle background grass.

T: Much like the nose. Heavy on the sweet caramel malts and roasted malts. Light green grass with a mild piny bitterness. The finish is sweet toffee with a hint of smoke.

M: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation level. Smooth and sweet on the finish. Pretty drinkable.

O: I would have like a little more hops a la Lagunitas Imperial Red, but this was still a solid take on the style. The malts are definitely the star of the show.

Served in a 5oz taster glass at Tighthead 4/29/12. Thanks to the Dood for making the trek with me!

A: Served a deep tawny red. A thin wafer of off white foam forms on top and leaves a bit of lace behind.

S: Heavy on the toasy caramel malt with a bit of biscuit and light hops.

T: See above. Pretty enjoyable.

M: Full and rounded. Slick and coating.

O: Nice. I could've done without the whole Grateful Dead explanation behind the name, but what are you gonna do? Next time I'm there I'll imagine it's named after a Slayer song or something.

Appearance is a redish tint and reminds me of a Irish Red Ale. There is an inch of tan which disappears.
The smell is of a rich caramel aroma. You can also smell raosted barley.
Taste is a hint of caramel and roasted barley is there also.
The carmel taste is very nice and reminds you of a great Irish red but better.
Great beer form a great new brewery!

Draft serving at Moe's Tavern, served in a NB goblet.

Tawny copper, khaki tan head of creamy foam, great lasting retention. Spotty lacing around the edges, constant skim on the surface for the duration of the glass.

Mellow specialty malt aroma, sort of dry with little if any sweetness. Flavors are similar, dry and husky grain flavors, sort of papery, touch of tobacco. Well carbed and slightly watery. Overall very simple yet drinkable. Would prefer this over Fat Tire but that's about it.

Served in a shaker pint glass at The Firkin.

The last of the three Tighthead brews from their Firkin debutante party (cotillion?). It pours a clear garnet-russet topped by a finger of dusty light tan foam. The nose comprises lightly toasted biscuit, light rye bread, caramel, light pine sap, and a touch of grapefruit zest. The taste brings in more of the same, with the bready caramel and the grapefruit really duking it out on the tongue (without actually clashing, somehow). The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta dry finish. Overall, I found this to be the weakest of the trio here. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think I'm gonna seek it out again any time soon.
