On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours a medium caramel red with a soft creamy white head, leaving some good lace. Solid looking pint.

S: A bit aromatically challenged with hints of toffee and biscuit.

T: Light bready malt flavour with some caramel/biscuit flavours. Mild grassy hops in the finish.

M: Light-bodied, very creamy and soft, easy drinking.

O: This was a solid pint, but nothing really to stand out. If you want something you can drink a lot of on St. Patty's day, go with this.

On tap at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is pretty straightforward with some malt and caramel aroma. Taste is much the same along with caramel syrup and toffee flavors. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it's basic and I am not too sure I would go for this one again.

On tap at Taps in Brea.

A: Pellucid amber with a creamy one finger cap. Okay retention.

S: Strong bread profile with accompanying biscuit and caramel. Malt is the focus of the beer, with just a little earthy hops.

T: Toasted bread melds with caramel and biscuit. The beer is lightly sweet with a low bitterness. No evident alcohol.

M: Medium in body with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, and sticky.

Overall: A pretty good malty red ale. Not an exciting style and not an electrifying beer.

A: The pour is a medium to dark amber color with with an off-white head on top.

S: The aromas are pretty standard for a red ale: sweet caramel and toasted, biscuity malts. There isn't much in the way of hop aroma.

T: The nose led me to believe this would be a pretty decent (though not amazing) red ale. However, I was gravely disappointed. The flavor had some initial sweet, caramel maltiness followed by a very off flavor that I can only describe as olives.

M: The body is medium and the carbonation is quite lively.

D: The off, olive flavor really ruins this beer. I was really glad I only got a taster glass rather than a full pint of this beer.

Pours dark brownish red with a moderate creamy reddish tan head. Decent sized head for on-tap, moderate retention, not much lacing. Smells a bit bready, slightly nutty and earthy. Not a huge bouquet, though this was also served seemingly much too cold.

Tastes of a light, bready, slightly nutty caramel sweetness. Fairly nice bitterness throughout gives this a very well done level of balance. Not what I would call hoppy, but enough well placed bitterness to prevent this from being just a brown ale. I don't consider Irish Red to be a very exciting style, and this is a very good example of a red that can be extremely well done but also fairly unexciting. Medium bodied with a well placed low to medium carbonation. Very easy to drink this one, though for six bucks I would opt for a more exciting style. Very good Irish Red.

A- red side of amber with a strong, slightly off white head.
S- sugar side of malt, but not much distinguishable aroma
T- sweet malt all the way through to a dry finish that does not seem to come from the hops
M- medium body, well carbonated
D- Tip of the hat to Taps for brewing this style. One of the lower alchohol brews on tap (5.3%).

Taster glass, consumed 03/06/08.

Clear, medium amber. Thin skin of foam.

No aroma.

Malty with a slight sweetness. Some corn on the finish. Nicely astringent. Contrasted with the cask version, this is a little cleaner and more flavorful. And the mouthfeel is better with carbonation.

First time I've had a cask ale that wasn't as impressive as its carbonated iteration.

Sampled today at the Corona location, my favorite of their offerings, also has won lots of awards in the past including a gold medal at the World Cup and GABF in multiple years

A-Medium red that is a little orange side, 1/2 creamy white head that stuck around for about four minutes, some lacing towards the beginning too

S-Lots of malt, floral accents, some fruit including cherries and red apples, and faint amount of hoppiness

T-Bready malt with a hint of lightly sweet fruit, then lots of dryness in the finish, would expect this to be much sweeter based off its aroma, nicely balanced with floral hoppiness in the aftertaste, went down even easier after it warmed, big malt flavor but not overpowering, pretty dang good for an Irish red ale

M-Dry and chewy mouthfeel, medium body, too much carbonation, taste did linger for a good amount of time, goes down with ease

D-Could drink a whole growler of this myself and I contemplated purchasing one before I left, light on the stomach, incredibly smooth and very easy to drink, low ABV, taste is complex enough to keep drinking, great session beer

Saw banners and awards for this all over the place, also the most popular brew according to the people working here, would be interesting on cask, will definitely drink this one again, highly recommended among the permanent taps offered at TAPS, good beer for its style that is often overlooked

The beer started with a nice head that stuck around and laced the glass considerably. It was a light red color, a bit lighter than the usual red ale. Nice and clear. Smelled typical for a red ale, that is the usual crystal malt and uninspired. The taste was about the same. No hop flavor and little bitterness. Very smooth though, and medium bodied. Very drinkable just doesn't taste like much.

Skeptical about this offering from Taps? Displayed are gold medal banners from both the Beer World Cup and the GABF of 2006. Still skeptical? Try it like I did:

It's an amber colored beer with plenty of punch and complexity. It starts like a good Irish Red with lots of toasty malts and a splash of hops before going fruity. Spices like cinnamon and vanilla prevail all around, but sugar cookie dough stands out the most, especially in the finish. Who knew this style could be so delicious? Thank you Taps!

Appearance – This was red in color with an orangish glow and some light brown notes along with a moderate head.

Smell – The malts here are thick and gooey; very nice. There’s some light floral hopping to the bouquet as well.

Taste – The malts turned kind of grainy at the taste which was disappointing. There was also a light sense of peat and the hops from the nose seemed to go AWOL. This beer kind of fell apart on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – This is a sprightly light to medium-bodied ale.

Drinkability – This was a lively drink that wasn’t bad but didn’t have any of the “wow” factor from the other beers they were pouring.

This was what Taps had in cask. Arrived feeling warmer than if on tap (which I was told is the norm) and was a clear amber color with an off-white head that quickly dissolved to a thin ring. Virtually no carbonation.

Smell was of toast grains with a hard-to-define fruitiness lurking around. Almost smelled like cherries but I really couldn't pin it down.

Tastes of toasted malts. That flavor dominates throughout with a mix of fruits added. Lightly bitter at the finish.

Feel was medium-bodied, smooth and creamy.

This offering is pretty easy to put away. It has a nice balance with no rough edges. Creamy smoothness envelopes the palate and urges one to continue to enjoy.
