Appearance: Arrives as a dark brown colored liquid capped by an inch or so of light tan foam; decent retention and plenty of lace
Smell: Roasty and hoppy, in equal doses, with a real char character that complements the piney hop elements
Taste: Pith and pine, up front, with the roasty charred malt flavors bringing balance by mid-palate; bright and hoppy into the finish, though the roasty malt with chocolate underpinnings lingers in the aftertaste
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation
Overall: My first beer from NoDa and it is a real winner, with a depth of flavor, a lively mouthfeel and excellent balance; as good an American Black as you will find

On tap:
Pours a dark brown, with some clarity at edges, but dark enough that you cannot tell without holding to light. Head ends up spotty I the surface (let the beer sit, full disclosure), but there is lacing. Nose is a nice balance of bitter, "greenness" from hops and a chocolatey roasted note from the grain.
Taste follows that nose, starting with unsweetened chocolate notes, maybe a bit of flavored coffee beans. The hops are floral, again a generic "green", meadow, maybe a bit grass (and maybe, just maybe, a slight hint of citrus). Feel is balanced, a tad under-carbonated by the time of it around to it. Body is medium - nicely so.
I enjoyed this beer for its balance. Black IPAs and porters, to me, are very similar, and this one is just in the correct side of the line for the style it claims to be. Well done!

Excellent. Had on draft. Very dark with dark tan colored head. Hoppy and roasted flavored in the nose. Tastes great. Strong roasted malt backbone but very floral, piney flavors. Well balanced. A great Black IPA.

There are only six other reviews previously and all accurate. If I get a chance at a bar, I will combo 1/3 Noda Coco Loco and 2/3 Hop Drop and Roll. This beer comes very close to that maybe with a tad bit less hops but a still good bite at the end. Surprisingly little foam from tap at Big Bens in Charlitte. A little swirl brings back the foam with a nice coffee malty smell. Clean dark look leads to an artistic malt hop mix, a little more malt in the front but more hoppy bite at the end. Smooth and levels off more of a clean taste rather than too robust.
