Bought some can's straight from the brewery. It poured a golden red brown with a nice head that left some nice lacing.
Smells of a fresh cut hay field mixed with toffee.
Taste is interesting, I get a little fresh cut hay field with a majority of it being toffee and sweetness. I do get a lot of the hops in there which add a lot of piney sweetness.
The mouthfeel is pretty good, it is a higher percentage so I would expect it to be a sipper and the syrupy feeling helps with that.
Overall, I'm just not as impressed. There are some flaws I can taste right away. It's just that feeling you get when you know something is just not right. I feel bad, because it's not a bad beer, it's just trying to stand out in a market that has soo many great ones.

Consumed at the brewery on March 20th, 2013. Reviewed from notes. This is the "new recipe" version.
Beer is a clear coppery-orange with a two-finger head. Crown recedes to a small white cap and provides very sticky lacing down the sides of the glass.
Aroma is unfortunately sulfuric (sewer-like). There's also an earthy, grassy note.
The beer is thick with a strong caramel malt character up front. Fairly sweet. Hops are balanced with the malt. Somewhat resiny, piney bitterness on the finish.
Mouthfeel is prickly and creamy. A little parching as well.
A respectable strong IPA, but a double/imperial? Not quite ready to play in that bracket.

On tap at the SF Toronado.
Pours a very light yellow/gold color, hazy, with a small white head. Almost looks like a wit beer.
Aromas are much nicer than the appearance. Bright citrus, floral hops, and some pine notes.
Taste is very similar to the smell. Bright citrus, some grapefruit bitterness that is pretty strong, and a background of light cracker and hard candy sweetness. Finish is quite dry and bitter.
Mouthfeel is full enough, with nice crisp carbonation.
Overall, a pretty nice DIPA. It's a bit different, really bitter, and kind of weird looking, but I was pretty pleased with my glass.

"India Pale Ale." 8.0% ABV confirmed. 16 fl oz aluminum can with detailed but bland label acquired at a local Vons grocery store as part of a cardboard 4 pack and served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are below average given the brewery.
Served cold, straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a three finger beige colour head of no real cream. Disappointingly thin. Retention is above average (~4 minutes) for the ABV. Body colour is a pale vibrant yellow. Transparent and translucent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Standard fare for the style; there's nothing unique or special here. No overt flaws.
Sm: Floral character. Grapefruit citrus fruit ester hop character. Pale malts. No yeast or alcohol is detectable. A mild strength aroma.
T: Pleasant grapefruit citrusy esters up front. It's great for the first act, and then we hit the pale malt body. Problems emerge as untamed bitterness surges at the midpoint and takes until the late third act to die. Not real creamy. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. The pale mount foundation is unobtrusive but also somewhat weak. Lightly nectary. Its biggest flaw is by far its lack of balance. Built decently otherwise. Far from impressive.
Mf: Smooth and wet. A bit biting. Overcarbonated. Thin up front and too tick towards the back end. Bad presence on the palate. Lightly oily. Not well suited to the flavour profile.
Dr: Drinkable for the decently hidden high ABV, but its severe lack of balance really holds it back. The problems get much worse as it warms. Serve this one very cold. It's not bad, but I wouldn't get it again unless it was the only good option at a bar.

I poured this can into a tulip glass. There was about two fingers of foam which stuck to the glass really nicely. The coloring is darker, like you may find in some DIPA's.
Off the top I get funk, citrus, and a little more malt than I would like. The flavor is a little unbalanced as well. The hops don't really work properly in this one.
Overall this is a decent DIPA. I would pick up a can, but don't go out of your way to get a hold of one.
