A - Black pour with no foam retention. Lacing is minimal. Actually, it looked relatively flat for a stout.
S - Scents of roasted malt and cocoa is present. There is also a smell of vanilla and caramel. Has an overall smell of a good candy bar.
T - Has a strong flavor of roasted malt, sugary chocolate, and a bit of almonds.
M - Light bodied stout that is complex on flavor and light on the stomach. Easy to have a few of these.
O - Not a bad stout, and a sessionable one at that.

On-tap at Drop Off Service, New York, NY
A: The beer is very dark red (near black) in color. It poured with a thin tan head that died down and left a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of lactose in the nose; these become stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of lactose but also an equal amount of dark and roasted malts.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness.
O: This beer seems to have more flavors of roasted malts compared to other beers in the style.

On tap at Pony Bar. Pours black with a head that's a little on the small side for the style; fair retention, but decent creamy looking lacing on the glass. Aroma is very roasty; mild sweet chocolatey notes emerge as well as an undercurrent of bitter hops that become more assertive as the beer comes to temperature.
The flavor follows the nose and is aggressively roasty, almost burnt, as advertised. Frankly it's a little bit dominating in the overall taste and throws things a little out of whack for my palate. Mild sweetness and chocolate flavor, and again, a late emerging, surprising strong hoppy bitter note not usually encountered in this style.
The body and carbonation both are medium; somewhat vaguely fizzier than I'd like; and the milky lactose creaminess in both taste and feel could be more present.
I'm a big fan of this brewery in general but this was just good, not great, for me. Didn't really hit all the satisfying notes I look for in a milk stout. Not the typical attempt at this style, which is cool in and of itself, but I didn't find the end result to be outstanding.

Had this a few weeks ago at Pony Bar on the UES in NYC.
a - Pours a very dark brown, almost black color, with one inch of light tan head and light to moderate carbonation evident.
s - Smells of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, pine hops, floral hops, earthy notes, chalk, light cream. Decent nose; hoppier than I was expecting.
t - Tastes of chocolate, roasted malts, chalky, earthy notes, pine hops, floral hops, resin, toasted malts, and some light coffee. Again, a decent amount of hops in the taste.
m - Light to medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.
o - Overall a decent milk stout. Not too sweet, but more of a hoppy stout, which I am usually not too crazy about. Some nice chocolate and roasty notes with pine hops, worth checking out if you like hoppy stouts, but not Carton's best. I'd stick to their other beers.
