Thanks to biboergosum for this one.

Poured from a 341ml. bottle, no freshness info.

Appearance: Very light gold body, huge head, excellent retention and layers of rings of foam.

Smell: Good rye, bit bitter mixed with spices, green hops, pungent orange pulp.

Taste: Spicy rye kicks in midway through the finish and preceded by fruit pulp and orange skin plus a light honey kiss.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, good carbonation, low bitterness.

Overall: A decent enough IPA. Worth a shot.

Bottle from a Phillips mixed 12-pack, bought in Alberta, poured into a standard pint.

A - I popped it and left the bottle for a second to do something else, when I came back it had topped over. Gave it a very gentle pour as a result and it still had two fingers of head. Colour was a nice, golden orange. Lots of lacing left as it goes down.

S - Lots of piney and citrus, mainly orange, hops on the nose.

T - Definitely get hit with the rye up front with a bit of hops coming on after a second. Not overly hoppy though, at least not in the traditional Phillips mould, clearly more to the American style. Bitterness lives up to its IBUs. The alcohol is there in the tiniest amount after it warms up.

M - Quite carbonated, but not to the point its overwhelming. Adds very nicely to the beer.

O - The rye flavour doesn't totally do it for me, but that's nothing against the beer itself, more of a personal preference. That said, I'll still gladly be drinking the other three left in the box.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass. my first Rye PA

A - golden yellow with white one finger head which stayed on for quite a while. good retention. looks on a lighter side, expected it to be darker / deeper.

S - citrusy and grapefruity upfront, some bready and earthy notes. some floral aromas as well. furity and hoppy - nice nose, not very aggressive but pleasant. rye isn't that apparent yet.

T - pretty hoppy, rye is there now. bitter - grapefruit and pine. a bit spicy, nice combination, rye makes this beer to stand out.

M - lacking carbonation, a bit off balance, but still pretty smooth, almost creamy. finishes pretty dry.

O - very interesting beer, willing to have more (and i will - i have two more left in the Hop Box). rye makes it pretty unique, definitely worth trying.

From a 341 ml brown bottle, as part of the Hop Box variety pack. Pours out a hazed deep straw hue, tall foamy, rocky white head that retains.

Musty earthy notes are juxtaposed with bright leafy and citrus hops in the aroma. Bready, toasty notes appear after a while.

Big leafy herbal hops up front in the flavour, some spicyness and some citrus pith, with earthy malt on the finish that has its own spice and dryness, while the spicy herbal hops make a comeback in the aftertaste.

Light-bodied mouthfeel that gains a bit of heft from a creamy smooth texture and some moderate carbonation.

Great rye ale to start with, the hops seal the deal, creating harmony and enough contrast to keep things interesting. Worth seeking out, that's for sure.

341ml bottle poured into a 16oz tulip.

A - A nice frothy head billows up off the pour, slightly off-white in color. Rather cloudy for a Phillips brew, with a hazy golden-orange hue to it. Fantastic head retention and lacing, as with any Phillips brew. Soapy white suds abound as this one goes down, leaving a sticky wall of lace. Full marks for packaging, presentation, and label-art as well; something Phillips do really well.

S - Lots of citrusy 'C' hops upfront, with floral and light spicy notes as well in the hop profile. Super pronounced notes of mango and pineapple, really nice. Dank pine forest floor, with some mild floral spice. The malt backbone is less crystal malt and more earth than the usual IPA. Fresh peach, mandarins, and pink grapefruit rind. Really fantastic aroma on this one.

T - Opens up as planned, with piles of tropical hop notes upfront, but quickly gets blown away with resinous, spicy rye malt. Big fruity, citrusy hops, with pineapple and mango dominating upfront, and citrus rind, grapefruit, tangerine, and peach in the background. Finishes with a delicious mixture of tropical fruit, floral spice, earthy rye malt, toasty caramel malt and even a light evergreen minty character. The big spicy, earthy flavors from the rye help neutralize and balance the hop profile in the finish incredibly well, resulting in one of the most drinkable IPAs I've ever had while still delivering big hop flavor. I can't get over the delicious candied-fruit explosion this packs, while still keeping the bittering character in check with rye malt spice and a nice resinous earthiness to the malt.

M - A fine carbonation drifts over the palate, giving the medium bodied feel of this brew a sublimely smooth texture. Not too wet, and not too dry. Fantastic mouthfeel for an IPA. Finishes with a lingering mixture of sweet, bitter, and spicy. Slight stickiness.

D - Coming into this review I wasn't sure what to expected. I've never had a beer of any style that used copious amounts of rye malt, but I'm happy to say they were used incredibly well here. I just can't picture this brew being much better overall. From the appearance and presentation, to the well-hopped aromatics, to the delicious and balanced profile. The bright tropical and floral notes are just done to perfection. This is just really my kind of IPA, huge hop flavor with just the right bitterness; not overly abrasive, but still highly hopped. Hats off to Phillips for this awesome brew.

6.5% on the label.

Golden bronze with a light haze (from the rye?), great retention and lace.

New school hop aroma is somewhat catty & dank (in a good way), light citrus, mango, pine and a hint of spice.

Hops are up front: Gooseberry, mango, marmalade and a bit of piny resin. Good bitterness, but not at all abrasive, rye crackers and sponge toffee round out the flavour. Alcohol is subtle.

Moderate mouthfeel is extremely smooth.

Very well-crafted. Not over-the-top. This is just an all around great brew.

This will be my second review from the "Hop Box" (I just love the name)! I've had a few Rye-IPAs before, and they've been a bit of a mixed bag. I'm curious how this one turns out.

It pours a fairly pale light-honey kind of colour. There is lots of visible carbonation, and the head is fluffy and substantial. It's a bit paler than I would have expected, but the head is exceptional!

The aroma is very hoppy, with some bright citrus coming though off the bat. Underneath the fruitiness is a hint of a distinctively rye kind of malt. It's a bit rougher and earthier than a normal IPA, but smooth is a different sense.

The taste is somewhat lighter than I'd expected. The malt profile is a bit less intense than is typical, but it's also very smooth and they rye isn't overpowering. the hops come down hard right in the middle and have a light citrusy, yet tart-bitter aspect.

Overall, this is a very drinkable IPA with a bit of a different kind of flavour. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary yet hoppy, I'd recommend this one.

Pours a golden yellow, with a nice head that lingers throughout, leaving good lacing. Smells of leafy hops, resin, and pepper. The initial flavor is Cascade hops, which give way to earthiness, with notes of pepper and tobacco(?!). It has a spicy, lingeringly bitter finish. Medium bodied, with aggressive carbonation. I couldn't drink these all day, but it's a nice addition to the Hopbox, which is a great concept in itself.

Another score from my western BA pal jormcgrath27, cheers!

A - Pours a slightly hazy golden colour with an orange hue, solid finger of soapy off-white head with decent retention and some spotty lacing.

S - The sweet citrus hop notes dominate, some spicy caramel and a hint of oak and peat.

T - Unique flavours, the lemon citrus hops dominate again, but are more bitter than sweet, a different spiced up resin flavour, and earthy oak notes linger.

M - A thinner bodied ale that could use a carbonation lift, finishes with a hint of dryness and a lip puckering bitterness.

O - A tasty IPA loaded with hops, though I was hoping for more influence from the Rye Malts. Certainly flavourful, easy drinking and enjoyable. Would be a tasty ale at a pub on tap.

341ml bottle. Nice chemistry class imagery on the label, tying the periodic table, nuclear-grade hops, and the superhero of the eponymous homeworld all together in one neat little package.

This beer pours a hazy medium golden colour, with two fingers of puffy, dense pillow-like off-white head, which leaves a pocked wall of painted lace around the glass in its wake. It smells of moderately bitter pine needles, bready, spicy rye grain, and further herbal hops. Nice. The taste is strong, earthy pine resin, mild sweet citrus rind, slowly rising rye malt, zingy and peppery by its nature, and soft floral hops. The carbonation is on the low side, the body a skinny medium weight, and smooth enough. It finishes off-dry, barely, the rye malt not proffering much sweetness, and citrusy, piney hops having the run of the asylum.

A damned fine rye IPA, fruity, hoppy, drinkable, yet still intrinsically a rye drink - those who know it, really know it. I usually prefer to stand on the periphery, but this time I am duly sucked in. Good stuff.
