On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marocs, CA

Clear golden with a half-inch ring of near-white bubbly foam, eventually leaves spots and small bubbles of stick down the glass.

Some citrus elements in the aroma, though I probably wouldn't say pineapple if it was put down in front of me blind. Some orange and passion fruit combine nicely though, along with some biscuit malt character.

Mild citrus and toasted biscuit combine along with a touch of sweetness. Moderately bitter for the style. Very easy drinking.

Moderate body with moderate-high carbonation. Dry.

Good, but not great.

On Cask for 30th on 30th at Hammies.

A - Very different yellow orange hue. Quite hazy, not sure if that is from the cask. One finger head from cask pour.

S - Crazy amount of pineapple in the nose, along with some more traditional citrus and dank hop.

T - Again quite different with a very pronounced pineapple taste. Finishes with a burst of danker hoppiness, I'd guess this is dry hopped with the pineapple hop after a good dose of bittering hops. Not much malt going on but this is an x pale ale so there ya go.

M - Slight carbonation being on cask, was good but I'm interested in trying the beer on tap to see the difference. Somewhat thick and oily from so much dry hopping.

O - Well I had three in a row so that's a good sign. Very different beer and one I'd try again.

Clear amber in the glass. Starts out with very modest foam and fades from there. Fairly flat flavor. Quite bitter and thin. Starts with a promise of roast malt but that evaporates fast. If this were 3.2% I might be more forgiving.

Overall, it tastes like club soda mixed with quinine.

On tap at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach, San Diego. Is it even conceivable that someone would name a beer after that particular movie? Maybe this is another elaborate hoax, but I am grateful I only had a half pint.

On tap at Monkey Paw.

A: Translucent yellow with an inch of cream. Good retention.

S: Bright and vibrant hop character: mango, passion fruit, pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, and orange. This smells very good. Malt imparts faint grainy notes in the nose.

T: Orange flesh and pith meld with tangerine and grapefruit. Malt is faint and crackery with grainy notes. The beer is dry and moderately bitter with lingering citrus in the finish. Not on par with the aroma, but still enjoyable.

M: Upper light in body with upper medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is crisp, dry, and sticky.

Overall: A good hoppy Pale Ale with a very nice aroma. This is crushable.
