Glass: Tulip
Odell's Levity ale situates itself as a firmly malty brew, though it is not without its spicy, herbal hop notes to act as both balance and vector of complexity in this beer. I enjoyed this, and think it would be a perfect accompaniment to fall/spring camping or evenings on a porch/patio. Another reason I wish Odell had larger distribution range.
Pours a 1cm tall head of slightly off-white foam with average retention of about one minute. The decline of the head leaves little lacing, a few spots around the inner perimeter of the glass. The body is a slightly hazy copper color, with light bringing out orange hues. Carbonation is readily visible, streaming from the bottom of the glass.
Aroma showcases toasted bread, toffee, slight fruit (cherry) esters, and some herbal, woods-smelling hops. This is a very nice, malt-forward aroma with some interesting yeast byproducts and hop choices.
Front of palate picks up sweet, bready malts, some slightly flowery, perfume-like hops. Mid-palate finds some toasted bread, nuts, caramel and toffee flavors along with mild hop spiciness, and composting leaf/organic matter. Back of palate finds toasted and caramel malts with noticeable, but low, hop bitterness. Aftertaste is of toasted bread and sweet, heavy barley malt with slight hop spiciness and organic matter in the background.
Beer is medium bodied, with carbonation levels of medium-low intensity, resulting in a mouthfeel that is slightly foamy, never fizzy, and generally crisp and smooth. Closes fairly dry, with modest stickiness lingering across the palate.
