Served in a tulip glass. Beige head leaves a coating of lace. Near black color where no light passes.
Even with a full glass the flavor is strong. There are elements of evergreen, chocolate and a touch of sourness. Mildly prickly.
A phenomenal, slightly different beer: Starts with a light brown sugar sweetness. There's a toasty flavor as well. Slowly, the bittering hop takes over; peppery and spicy. Warm alcohol in the swallow. Long, well-balanced aftertaste. The body is neutral/ the carbonation high.

A - impenetrable black, two fingers of tan head retained extremely well, bits of lacing here and there
S - big pine resin and leafy hop aromas, some toffee and roasty/smoky notes also
T - pine resin and earthy hops up front, followed by roasty and light molasses malts, leafy and earthiness rounds out the with a faint touch of alcohol
M - relatively light bodied, smooth though the middle with hop bitterness picking up through a medium dry finish, no trace of the 9.5% ABV makes it dangerously drinkable
O - fairly unassuming at first but the flavours build along with the drinkability making for an outstanding example of a style that I hope grows in popularity

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a clear rounded glass mug. Did not record the freshness date although I remember that it was in May 2013. Purchased by my brother Greg from a Minneapolis-area bottle shop. Tasted in early April 2013 and reviewed from notes.
A: Very dark brown to black with 1-finger of dark beige head with average retention but sticky lacing.
S: Big roasty notes with bright citrus hops, more on the lemon and grapefruit side than orange, with some herbal and earthy notes as well. Dark maltiness with a dark rye breadiness is there too.
T: A very well-composed beer with a great balance of roast, dark maltiness with some raisin and date fruitiness, and bright citrus hopping with lemon, lime, and grapefruit being most prominent. There is no acrid or astringent character, it is incredibly smooth and easy to drink as the flavors are well melded. It reminds me a little bit of the Stone Anniversary CDA from a year or so ago.
M: Very drinkable with a medium body and relatively low carbonation to yield a creamy overall experience.
O: A really impressive high-ABV CDA that is smooth, flavorful, and balanced with hops and maltiness both making bold statements. A really impressive beer that I think should be a standard-bearer for, dare I say it, imperial American Black Ale or CDA.

Pours a very dark brown with moderate tan head. Good retention and moderate lacing. Moderate aroma of citrus and floral hops with a hint of roast. Flavor is a nice balance--bitter chocolate and toasted grains are there, but just enough to contrast with the nice hop profile. Not as much black patent bitterness as many black IPAs and a nice mix of citrus and piney hops. Medium mouthfeel and a clean finish. Very nice.

Poured into tulip. Bottle dated 3/13/13.
A. Dark carmel, nearly black. Two fingers of light tan head. Dissipates quickly.
S. Roasted malts. Hint of melon and pine.
T. Sweet malts, toffee give way to bitter hops. Slight bitter aftertaste. Hides alcohol well.
M. Chewy. Smooth finish.
O. Mountain Standard is an outstanding balanced IPA. Smooth and tasty - almost too much so for the 9.5 ABV. Will be back for more.
