750ml, 2012 vintage (I think?)
Mini pint glass

A: Pours a murky brown color. Tons of carbonation. Over carbed and/or that Brett has really takin' over this one. Light tan head. Lots of lacing.

S: Smells a little oxidized actually. Some of that Brett character. Some nutty notes. Some slight roast character. Nothing too memorable.

T: Taste follows the nose. It's OK, but seems to be lacking and seems like the age might have got to this one. Some tartness initially from the Brett. Then you get that base brown ale character. Finish is slightly dry.

M: Medium bodied.

At first I just marked this as a had and gave it a 2.

But I decided that I would expand to write a full review. Had this bottle about a year. I could not finish the bottle.

Cracked it open and it smells very musty. Not really appealing to me. Overally funky. Damp wood scents come through as well.

Pours dingy brown abundant white, foamy head. And tastes very funky a little sour. The flavors comming through are musty, sour pineapple. Seems to be some off flavors comming through that were not completely intentional.

Poured out much of the bottle.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer. A one-time release? Sure, why not?

Consumed 1/19/13

Appearance: Pours brown, with some red around the edges - some clarity - small, off-white head, fades to absolutely nothing - no head, no cap, no lacing, sad times

Smell: Musty, damp, sour, and tart - a damp, musty cellar - some intentional Brett - funky and woody - some brown malts - genuinely smells like something pulled out of a wet barrel from a damp, moldy basement

Taste: Sour, tart, damp, and wet - the sourness is interesting, but it's a bit much, like an accidental brett infection - some brown malts - a ton of wood and barrel, with way too much alcohol - sour, but not particularly interesting - some sweetness

Mouthfeel: Full body, minimal carbonation, smooth, but almost syrupy

Overall: Listen all y'all, it's a sabotage

Odell makes some fantastic beers. Honestly, I'm both surprised and disappointed that this isn't one of them. Yes, it's sour and tart, but it's also a boozy mess. Interesting, but not great.

Thanks to buffs9 for the bottle. Split with angrybabboon.

Appearance: Deep, dark brown. Some dark red highlights. Minimal carbonation. No lasting cap or collar. What head does appear on is off-white and bubbly.

Smell: Earthy with a slid hit of oak. Powdery Brett runs throughout. Slight lactic tartness. Some citrus. Worn leather. Distinctly nutty. Some wood. Slight roasted element. Some lighter herbal notes. Touch of acetic tartness. Vinegar and wood. Mushrooms.

Taste: Nutty. Incredibly nutty. Some caramel malt sweetness coupled with some light cocoa elements. Underlying powdery yeast. Mild funkiness. Grass and hay in the back. Earthy. Straight up mushrooms. Some leathery elements. Truffles. Roasted edges. Cooked. Something like brown rice.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with almost no carbonation. Lingering nuttiness.

Overall: It's time for a paradigm shift.

You want to know what nutty is? Drink this. Nutty and faintly funky. Mushrooms, rice, and nuts. Good, but odd. Bonus points for being unlike anything else.

From a 750 ml into a tulip.

A-The bottle opened with a pretty significant pop of the cork, but the beer (thankfully) didn't gush on me. Still, this brew proved difficult to pour without massive amounts of foam. Once things settled a bit, I was looking at a dark, dark brown beer that was nearly opaque. Just a slight hint of red. The foam was mocha-colored.

S-The beer gave off a funky, earthy, tart aroma of oak, vanilla, cherries, and a little brett. Fair amount of wood here.

T-The taste was earthy, mild malts combined with oak, leather, vanilla, raisin, and a touch of tart cherry. The alcohol was well-integrated and a bit herbal in character.

M-The beer was pretty smooth drinking and medium in body. Carbonation was noticeable, but not dominant.

O-I liked this brew. It was a unique combination of flavors and feel with little bits of brown ale, quad, and american wild ale all mixed together. Fortunately, I think the combination worked out to produce a tasty beer.

Poured from bomber into tulip at papago in Scottsdale.
Pours a deep brown with ambed hue and about 3 fingers of tan bubbly head.
Aroma is a bit vinegar meets peanut maybe? Its not horrrible but not amazing either. Deff some barrel wood aroma notes.
Taste is of woody wine barrel some slight dried fruit and ever so slight brett or wild flavor. Its a brown ale slightly soured in wood...its good. Some more dried fruit and somewhat nutty. Let this one warm up a bit...much better closer to room temp.
So so easy to drink and at the double digit abv, thats scary.
Its a great brew...I just wish it was a bit more infected with brett.

1591st Review on BA
Bottle to wine glass
750ml c/c

Thanks to thebishopco for this one

App- A very dark brown. The retained most of the brown ale, which I expected it to. The dense center looks good in the glass but gives a lighter edge. A nice and medium tan head is there and falls semi quick. Very nice lacing and cling

Smell- The malty brown notes open and as it opens and settles the brett takes over and gives a bit of a musty odor to this. The oak adds a bit of prickly char and the ABV is well hidden.

Taste- I had wanted to try this for a while and it was a good beer. The overall taste is much like a deep red wine. Tannic, leather, oak and malty. The brett adds a good depth of flavor and imparts and smoothness as well.

Mouth- A full medium body with a medium carbonation. The residual flavors are some light funk, malty backbone and a bit of fruit.

Drink- A nice and layered beer. Nice depth of flavors with good integration. Long time want and was better than I hoped.

Produced a big 3 finger head, (careful pouring this one). Thick head, nice lacing. The beer color is a dark mahogany, just barely translucent.
The aroma is of malts, dark fruit, wood, a hint of bret.
The taste is is amazing! Much bolder than the aroma. Similar to smell, but with a light caramel sweetness dueling with a slight tartness from the bret, High carbonation, and mdium mouth-feel. Little aftertaste, and no noticeable hop bitterness.
Incredible beer, and easy drinking for it's style.

Just to note, the cork came out insanely easily with a load pop, so be cautious with this one.

The head formed is three fingers high and tan in color. Have to wait for it to die down for a while. Lacing is very nice though. The beer is a murky brown color with a ruby hue. Aromas of roasty malts, earthiness, brett funk, hinting at band-aids, leather and tobacco, caramel and toffee, bread, light citrus and tropical fruit, hints of wood/oak and sour cherries. Very interesting. Taste is very similar. Plenty of malts, caramel, earthiness, dark fruits, and light wood/oak, vanilla, tobacco and leather that keep this more of a brown for me than an American wild. However, there's also bretty funk, sour and tartness, though all on the lighter side. As I expected, the mouthfeel is a bit too carbonated. Medium-full body, smooth consistency, high carbonation, and light, dry finish.

Overall I think this one was just a bit too off, different for me to really endorse. Complex and interesting, yes, but not amazing.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter. We opened this at the August Baltimore BA get together.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy mahogany color with a finger of off white head. The bubbles are rather large and the head fades to a ring around the pour.

Smell: Getting the brett up front with some dark fruit and carmel malt showing up as well.

Taste: Brett tartness showing throughout. Malty underneath with a mild caramel sweetness. The finish is rather tart. This is a very different beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tons of carbonation, way too much in fact. The finish is dry.

Overall: This was a really weird beer for me. The malt with the tartness never quite blended. Could have been a bit less carbonated.

Shared by Darrell. Thanks man.

The cork shot into the ceiling upon opening. Huge tan head that coats the glass with sticky lacing. The beer is fairly hazy and appears a chestnut brown color.

The aroma brings roast, barrels, chocolate, wine, fruit, alcohol. Quite complex, but not as inviting as some of the upper tier beers in this genre.

Nutty flavor, with a vinous character. Red wine comes through quite a bit. Additional notes of fruit, chocolate. Ok. Not particularly tart or sour. A light fruity sweetness throughout.

Medium bodied and rich. Moderate carbonation.

Overall, this was ok. One small glass is plenty.

Strong sour dark fruit smell emitting from a very dark redish brown pour. Enticing. Taste is that of dates or raisins but sweeter. More grape flavored. Reminds me a little of a barley wine with that level of sweetness and low bitterness. It is very smooth going down with little hint of the high ABV. That really surprised me.

A very well done sour/wild. Love the taste and the sweetness of it.

Already had it on tap (though that was the '09 version), now trying it from the bottle ('12 version).

Dark brown with a huge, foamy khaki head. I had to wait for around 10 minutes for it to recede enough to begin drinking it. A full aroma of sweet bready malt, apples, cherries, wild yeast, and just a hint of wood. A touch of alcohol shows itself too. Flavor starts off sweet and fruity with just a hint of tartness from the yeast, the oak kicks in mid stream perhaps a touch too strong, and it closes out with the brown ale showing itself along with some vanilla, a chewy and sugary kind of finish. Again, a touch of alcohol shows itself. Medium bodied, creamy, some activity. Overall, Odell continues to win me over with their beers. A very nice take on a brown ale, enjoyed this more from the bottle than on tap.

Bottle purchased at Dennis Brothers in late 2010. Served in a Cantillon tulip.

A - Quick-dissolving, noisy, cola-esque foam that settles to a thick collar and wispy, partial cap. Very dark cherrywood body, with a few bubbles adhering to the bottom of the glass.

S - Lots of blue cheese, leather, earthen basement, tobacco, and a touch of sour cherry, oak, and vinegar. Alcohol is quite well-hidden, and improves significantly as it warms up.

T - The taste has significantly more brown ale characteristics. Sweet fruity and nutty malts, carob, vanila-infused cola, and only a mildly earthy and tropical brett finish. Not as wild as the aroma suggests.

M - Medium-full body, with nice chewy heft and viscosity. Sticky finish, although it holds some oaky dryness as well. Moderately active carbonation keeps things from getting to weighty, but this is otherwise quite smooth and creamy. Again, only modest alcohol presence.

D - It delivers exactly as promised - it's a 10% barrel-aged brown ale with brett. I don't think the premise was a particularly well-chosen one, but others may beg to differ. In any case, doesn't suffer from any obvious flaws, just isn't a beer I'd want in 750ml (or probably even 12oz) servings.

750ml bottle into a tulip courtesy of matttYCE. Not sure on the vintage.

A- Huge bomb of a cork. Pours a dark ruby/brown with a tan 3 finger rocky/ice cream head that leaves awesome lacing. Recedes and holds a one finger cap

S- Deep earthy brett funkiness, big bready notes, caramel, a bit of citrus fruit, and just a tinge of sour at the end. Pretty nice smelling.

T- Mostly caramel/vanilla/sweet malts with a bit of roast. There is a nice bit of funkiness to it along with just a bit of tartness...like generic lemonade-level. Finishes with some nice caramel and vanilla smoothness, a touch of roast, and just a bit of brett funk.

M- Medium-slick mouthfeel with pretty high carbonation that blasts the flavors off of your tongue pretty quickly...just how a "sour" should be.

O- This is a weird one for me. The smell is good regardless, but if I'm grading the beer as a wild it falls short in other categories. Grading it as a brown ale would have resulted in much higher scores.

750 ml corked & caged bottle
Served into a tulip glass

A: Dark brown body with a huge sudsy, foamy off-white head. The bottle conditioning evidence is obvious. Dissipation was slow leaving a thick head around for a while, along with patchy lacing on the walls. A bit overdone and annoying, but it is what it is.

S: Very bland and basic. Earthy malts from the Brown Ale base come through with very little toasting, some caramel, hints of faint bitter chocolate and a big funky brett overlay. Nothing tart or sour, just big funk.

T: Funky earthy-like brett qualities, caramel malts, young oak wood, and touches of toasted grains. There's really not too much going on here in terms of diversity. Yeah, it's a Brown Ale but the brett did nothing to really make this beer better. Having said that, I never had the base beer alone but in my opinion I just don't quite understand what they were trying to accomplish with the addition of the brett.

M: Highly carbonated, bubbly and a bit fizzy on the palate. Some dryness from the brett and barrel in the finish.

This was just okay. There wasn't anything that stood out in this beer. It tasted like a mediocre Brown Ale thrown a barrel with brett (which it was), but nothing more. Good to try? Sure. Nothing worth seeking out though.

Bottle obtained from local shop. Stored in cellar for about 2 months prior to consumption.

A - Very dark brown, nearly black color with a darker-tan head. Overly carbonated, on first pour, it filled the entire tulip with head - disappointing.

S - First thing on the senses is the spices, almost Belgian. Mild brett, smells of aged (oak?) wood and sweet and sour going on.

T - This beer was definitely interesting. Starts sweet with lots of flavor from the dark fruits, in the middle i tasted oak and spice, then it a tart finish via the brett. Not overly sour but a nice balance with the other flavors.

M - Medium body with WAY too much carbonation. My bottle was a bottle bomb. As soon as i took the cork out, it overflowed then on the first poor it was 99% head. Something went wrong here with this bottle....I've seen highly carbonated brews, this beat them all by a mile.

O - I have higher expectations for Odell. While i enjoyed the beer, it was let down by the mess it made all over my table, glass, and sink. The over-carbonation of this beer is an issue, or at least in my case it was. The flavors of the beer and the style of what they were going for with this brew, they did well - i commend them for that. I've had a lot of top-notch brews from Odell and i was expecting the same from this however i cant say i was thrilled with it. Beware the carbonation.

A - Pours a very dark brown, almost black color with massive four finger brown sugar looking head.

S - Mild brett, slight hop presence with a bit of spice characteristic. A bit of clove, banana, and sort of belgian spice. Very complex.

T - Starts out with some vanilla notes, mild bubblegum, tropical fruit such as pineapple and kiwi. Finish is mild pepper, earthy hops. The brett is barely noticeable to me.

M - Medium body with abundant carbonation.

O - Very easy drinking brown ale. This is an excellent beer for people wanting to experiment with sour beers. The brett presence is there but not overpowering or overwhelming in the least. Sourness of the brett is very faint. This does not make you pucker like I was figuring. Well done wild ale done by Odell.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights, slightly cloudy with a huge off-white head that lingers and laces.

Smell is of oak/wood with some tart cherry notes, vanilla, sweetness, and wild brett. It blends into a slightly stale and funky aroma.

Taste is up front brett/funk that goes into a slightly tart and astringent middle and ends on a sweeter pear, cherry, vanilla, oak note. The finish is nice enough, but the wild brett character rules over most of the taste. Reminds me of some infected homebrews I've had. Not bad but not really pleasing to my personal taste.

Medium to light body with medium to high carbonation and a warming alcohol body.

I find that I don't really enjoy the wild brett character, but everything else about the beer I do. A solid brew if you're into that particular medicinal brett character.

Got a bottle from Goebel's in Wichita.

Beer is a near-pure clear brown with orange highlights. Heavy, heavy lacing sticks all around the glass. Nice looking beer.

The nose is that of a yeasty brown ale, with hints of plum. very little hints of Brett in the subtle smell.

The taste is sweet with some roasted malt & dark fruity flavors, followed by the oak barrel, and finishing with the clean tart provided by the Brett. It's a 3-act play: Brown Ale, Oak, Brett. Higher points simply for its complexity.

Mouthfeel is nice & light, with considerable carbonation, but nothing special.

Overall, I'm liking this beer more and more as the bottle goes on, but hopefully that's not from the 10% ABV... Good, complex beer with a subtle use of Brett.

A quite deep mahogany. Against the light you can detect the deep ruby notes on the edges. Big, dirty-white head. Fat lacing and respectable retention. This head is sticking at a half-finger and going nowhere. Love the nose. Pungent, overripe fruit, wood, banana peel and the unmistakeable brett funk. Quite a bit of carbonation up front which dances on the tongue and peppers it with hits of funk and bready malt. That carries through the front 2/3rds and the back end flattens into a tangy, languid malaise. Truth be told, I like this beer a lot, but the back end nearly makes me question that decision.

Like It? It's good, but not great.

A - Pours an almost clear dark brown-red with a finger of tannish head. Head fades down at a normal pace with some good lace.

S - Aroma is full of sourness and sour cherry with some funky brett and some oak. Some other dark fruit as well.

T - Starts off with some sweet dark fruit and sour cherries. Through the middle, some more rich cherry flavor and funk come through with some funkiness and floral flavor. The finish is a mix of sour and tart cherries, oak, and funky brett.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a nice tart finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice sour beer with some really nice sour cherry. Hides the booze well.

Odell Saboteur. Brett Barrel Brown Ale. Alc. by Vol. 10%. Odell Brewing Company, Fort Collins, CO. Let's skip the gobbledygook, and open 'er up.

Beautiful brown coloration, with crimson highlights, peeking at the bottom. Lush head of tan foam, lacy and lasting. Looks great.

Smellin' it: warm, funky, …and oddly bourbon-y. Does "brett barrel" mean a particular kind of barrel? It's very whiskey-ish. Let's peek at the geek speak. "American oak barrels." Could mean bourbon, doesn't explicitly state it. Has the vanilla and oak, some cherry. And alcohol. That covers it.

Tastin' it: Sour cherry and oak take the palate first. Starts strong, and mellows down. Begins sharp and strong, whiskey feeling still hangs in there, driving the character of the ale more than the brett affects it. Sour factor is light and unobtrusive, just enough a kick in there to keep it interesting. Alcohol kick continues, as well, but doesn't grow too noisy. Halfway into this bottle, I'm not too afraid of what'll happen to me when it's empty. Close, but not quite.

One thing's for certain, and that's that this is a long, luxuriant sipper of an ale. Mmmm, mellow, yet powerful. Sumptuous. Satisfying. (Though I'm sure many of sour head has complained about the "lack" of Brett.)

"Our brewers created an unpretentious, yet sophisticated brown ale. Then they plotted and dosed this full-bodied ale with brettanomyces, the ultimate adversary of wineries. Embracing this vintner's nemesis resulted in a complex and wonderfully drinkable beer. Intense earthy notes of vanilla and pineapple come together with a sour silhouette. Aged in American oak barrels, and then bottle conditioned, Saboteur offers a luxurious texture and depth of flavor to discerning palates."

wait a minute…Pineapple???

The latest release. Even after chilling the bottle this was an explosive pour. Tulip was filled with foam. It took a long while before the foam settled to a thick cap. Curtains of lace is left on the glass. The liquid is a dark brown once it forms. Annoying pour throughout the bottle.

I smell wood. Not oak neccessarily, but decaying wood. I also get some mint and herbal elements. Not what I was expecting.

About the only exciting thing about the flavor of this beer is the woody flavor. And that is not all that impressive. It is earthy, I'll give it that. Very herbal and medicinal.

Seems the carbonation lost all its pop in the foam during the pour. It does nothing to really improve the body. The body is moderate in heft.

Another disappointing beer from Odell in the large format. I think I am done spending good money on these beers as I do not think I have enjoyed a one.

Poured into a tulip glass from a 750ml bottle.

Pours a nice dark mahogany with some nice dark amber hints on the edges and some nice molasses darkness. A nice 1.5 inch head pops up with some nice dense bubbles. The head has a nice light cream colored.

Caramel malt sweetness can be perceived immediately as well as some nice woody notes. There is definitely some slight vanilla sweetness and some hints of tartness on the back end. Pretty nice caramel malt body is felt in the nose mixed in with some nice Brett funk notes.

Starts off with some nice caramel and molasses slightly sweet notes. Followed by some bready notes that are pretty nice and earthy. Nice grain profile. Then there is a subtle nice tartness and funk that comes up with some slightly fruity notes. TEh tartness dies down quickly and smooths out whole the funk and wood notes continue to cover the tongue and play out in my mouth. The finish is nice and dry and there is a nice faint vanilla hint that finishes the beer off. Pretty nice. There is a typical Belgian fluffy and foamy mouthfeel.

Pretty good offering and take on the Brown Ale style mixed with the Brett. It has some pretty good qualities of both styles.
