Clear brilliant red amber color with a decent white head that hangs around and produces some nice lacing.

The aroma is roasted malt, caramel, citrus and pine.

The taste starts with a rich caramel malt followed immediately by a pine resin and grapefruit hops kick, at near IPA levels, that continues through the finish and lingers. Very nicely balanced, plenty for the hop fanatic and malt lover as well.

Medium/full bodied, smooth and very drinkable.

Picked a sixer of this up at Susan's Fine Wine and Spirits in Santa Fe. According to the beer guy there, the new red is similar to the old Extra Special Red, except less malt and more hop flavors.

A: Poured into a poor man's pint, was a nice deep golden-red color. Came out with a nice solid inch of very light head, which left consistent lacing throughout the drink.
S: Still a fair amount of malt, but you can definitely tell that this has more hops than the Extra Special Red. Almost has a little bit of a sweet, spicy scent to it. Maybe a hint of paprika almost.
T: Fantastic. Great up front malt. Throughout there was a pleasant citrus flavor going along with it, and it finished with a sweet and fairly strong hop flavor.
M: Incredibly full and refreshing. I really enjoyed the fullness of this one; after a full day out hiking, this was great to sit down to.
D: At 6.5%, this beer is just at the threshold of being too strong for a session beer. However, I will say that I've very comfortably killed my 6 pack in two nights, and I plan on going down and buying up a case while it's here. Highly recommended if you're a fan of reds.

Let me start by saying that although I am pretty bummed out that extra special red is gone along with the rest of the single batch series (which was awesome), I am happy that the new replacement series teed off with this beer, it's pretty damn good.

A-Murky deep amber with a small white head, decent retention and awesome lacing.

S-Cereal grains, caramel, piney hops.

T-SO well balanced. Nice rich sweet maltiness that has a funky intermingling with lemon grass hop flavor that rolls into a deep raosty and caramel malt flavor with a deep long lasting bitterness. Really tasty.

M-Nice, thick enough body but thin enough to drink easily. Good Co2.

D- Yeah buddy. Really flavorful and not filling. A great flavorful session beer or a decent sipper.

As always Odell's knocks another homerun.

A - Poured out a semi-opaque, dark red/burgundy color with a small, foamy, off-white head. It left sticky, rings of lace along the sides of the glass.

S - It smelled malty and of pine and citrus. Really a nice citrusy aroma.

T - It has a nice sharp bitter hop bite. It has a burnt toast maltiness. Overall, the flavor is reminiscent of an IPA.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a dry finish. A medium-bodied beer.

D - This is one of the hoppier red ales that I've had. It is a really good one.

A - Pours clear amber/red with orange hue. Head is creamy and adequate, off-white orange, leaves great lacing on the way down to a thin ring.

S - Piney and citrusy hops. Smells like an IPA with sweet malt notes.

T - Sweet malt base, good amount of bitterness, followed by a bouquet of hop flavors.

M - Moderate body with lingering bitterness. Warms the throat after a while.

D - Very drinkable and fully enjoyable.

Overall - This is a scarey beer, because it tastes so good and drinks so smooth. The ABV will sneak up on you. I like this beer almost as much as the Odell IPA (flip a coin). I would take either one.

Pours a clear, amber color. One inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of strong hops and some slight sweet malt. Fits the style of an American Amber/Red Ale. Mouth feel is smooth, crisp, and a low carbonation level. Tastes of strong hops throughout (especially in the finish), some earthy malt, and slight sweet malt. Overall, a really easy drinking beer but nothing special.

Picked up in Wichita at Goebels...

Pours caramel/copper with 2 fingers of intensely tight sand colored head. Good lacing & head retention

S: Pineyness & a hint of biscuitty malt, plus lemons & orange.

T: Pineyness, dryness & toasty malt up front. Grapefruit, caramel, dryness & a hint of booze are dominant as this warms, plus just a whisper of apricot. Finishes dry, with piney & herbal hops, almost pulled a 4.5

MF: Medium bodied, moderate carbonation & nice balance

Dangerously drinkable & a great addition to the stable, but let's bring back the IMP Red as well, please!!

I will pick this one up when I can, scratches the hop & malt itch...

12 oz bottle poured into a shaker pint. Inch of light tan head. Quick to recede, but leaves a solid sticky lace on the way down. Color is a dark and clear coppery red.

Smell is very hoppy. Fruity citrus and wood resin. Mildly sweet malt is hinted at. Taste is initially sweet and tart citrus with a little piny. The malt character doesn't quite balance out the hops. As it warms there is a little more balance. Finishes with a wood resin aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly creamy with a solid body. Carbonation is prickly at times. Not really what I was expecting in a red ale. Not bad, just took me by surprise.

Picked up a six pack of this at Albertsons in Laramie, around $8.

A: Deep orange/red with a large cream colored head about two fingers worth. Excellent retention. Huge clumps of clingy lacing, essentially a solid wall of foam. Crystal clear. Really an attractive beer.

S: Hop resins, definitely on the grapefruit end of the spectrum, but some big time pine in there as well, slight hint of booze, and really not much for the malt in the nose. Which is somewhat surprising and kind of a let down.

T: Way lighter in the mouth than the smell would lead too, nice balance of hops and malt though, malts are bready and slightly caramel in flavor, hops are piney, and the two compliment each other nicely. A little roasted character. Really balanced beer.

M: Much much thinner than the nose leads on. Nice carbonation though, not too prickly, pretty dry, nice lingering flavors. Just on the thin end of the spectrum.

D: This one could be a session, a little strong in the alcohol, but a really flavorful beer for the style. A lot of good things going on. Probably won't appeal to the masses like Levity, but definitely is a nice change of pace for what is sometimes a very boring style of beer.

Presentation: 12 oz longneck, standard Odell bottle. ABV and date are both clearly marked, label is a goat who looks a bit satanic, but the style matches the rest of the Odell logos.

Appearance: Pours clear red, nice head with good retention and lacing.

Smell: Lots of hops, grassy with a bit of sticky pine resin.

Taste: Lighter body than I expected from the aroma, hops are dominant but not the top. Quite a bit of malty flavor, but I can't pin down specifics.

Overall impression: Highly drinkable, some good flavors. This seems like a mellower version of their Extra Special Red.

This could easily be mistaken for an IPA.. Great transparent red color and smells like the grassiest fruity hops. The taste is bitter grassy hops again, fruit and bitterness. I guess you could call this red based upon the color but the smell and taste say hoppy IPA.

I've always enjoyed Odell's Extra Special Red and IPA. According to the brewery, they won't be making ESR any more but this is taking it's place landing somewhere in between the two in taste.

"A variety of agressive American hops..."

Pours from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. It has copper red color with just a slight haze. The inch of head wanes slowly leaving some nice lacing behind.

Aroma is really nice with lots of hops showing off pineapple and grapefruit with some fruity sweetness.

Flavor is very well done too with lots of great hoppy taste yet balanced with sweet carmel-like malts. The hops have a definate west coast character with pine and citrus coming through strong. Grassy hop flavors in there too.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, bitter but balanced, and nicely carbonated.

Certainly one of the more hoppy American red ales I've had and all the better for it. I could also see it being called a red IPA. Either way, another great beer from Odell.
