A-pours a nice crimson color with a creamy khaki 1 finger head with
a nice lacing and collar

S- is pine and hops ,grass citrus and malts

T- is a hop forward ale with a great hop presence.loads of citrus and pine hop tastes then it is nicely balanced with sweet caramel malts very nice balance of hops/malts

M-- nicely carbonated full of hop/malt flavor,,creamy and smooth very little bitterness and very fresh

D- so drinkable with a hop and malt explosion that is very nicely balanced ,,really liked this one and will be going back for a sixer or two more

A -- A hazy, rusty red brew pours to a two finger khaki head which settles to a filtered translucent liquid with a thin froth, leaving layered lacing.

S -- Floral hops, citrus rind, and pine sap in the nose, a slight whisper of malt sweetness.

T -- Follows suit with the nose, slightly grassy, really clean flavors of roasted malts, slight grain, and fruity / citric tones.

M -- Medium body with moderate carbonation which is complementary to the style.

D -- A textbook Red, worth a try and a repeat. Solid brew.

Picked up in Wichita at Goebels...

Pours caramel/copper with 2 fingers of intensely tight sand colored head. Good lacing & head retention

S: Pineyness & a hint of biscuitty malt, plus lemons & orange.

T: Pineyness, dryness & toasty malt up front. Grapefruit, caramel, dryness & a hint of booze are dominant as this warms, plus just a whisper of apricot. Finishes dry, with piney & herbal hops, almost pulled a 4.5

MF: Medium bodied, moderate carbonation & nice balance

Dangerously drinkable & a great addition to the stable, but let's bring back the IMP Red as well, please!!

I will pick this one up when I can, scratches the hop & malt itch...

A - Poured out a semi-opaque, dark red/burgundy color with a small, foamy, off-white head. It left sticky, rings of lace along the sides of the glass.

S - It smelled malty and of pine and citrus. Really a nice citrusy aroma.

T - It has a nice sharp bitter hop bite. It has a burnt toast maltiness. Overall, the flavor is reminiscent of an IPA.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a dry finish. A medium-bodied beer.

D - This is one of the hoppier red ales that I've had. It is a really good one.

Pours a little hazy amber with ruby highlights a thin one finger head, nougat colored with soapy and tight bubbles with sticky lacing that trails down beautifully.

Sweet hop aroma, fresh and floral pine with citrus coming in second. Malty backing with some spices and a medicinal raw hoppiness on the back.

Taste is a bold aggressive hoppiness throughout the beer resin and pine with a sweet crystal and caramel malt spine that helps balance it. Comparable somewhat to a junior barleywine just lacking the alcohol and transition from sweet to bitter. A little raw grassy hops on the back end with some yeast character. Sticky mouthcoating that doesn't strike me as very bitter but still very refreshing.

Mouthfeel gets a little rough with biting carbonation and the slightly soapy mouth coating that is typical of some of the hoppy Odell offerings. Great body though.

This is a bold aggressive wake up for spring kind of beer. Very drinkable and will appeal both to malt and hop fans. One that I just wish were available all year.

12oz Bottle

Here I hold yet another brew courtesy of BitterBill, you the man Bill! I can smell the hops oozing from this beer as I pour. A ruby red liquid fills my pint glass and glows copper when directly backlit. A few large carbonation bubbles shoot past a couple steady streams of smaller bubbles. The head snaps to attention at two fingers in height and leaves behind an incredibly sticky sheet of lacing after each drink. This is a damn fine looking red ale.

The nose screams hops, which is something I always crave in a red ale. Crystal malts and smooth easy caramel lay down the base for the Pac NW hoppiness. The hops are all citrus and all orange in varying styles. Orange peel, orange oil, and candied peel all keep the orange complexities flowing. The malts used in combination with the candy like hoppiness make this beer smell like an actual piece of candy, like it'll rot your teeth. When I dig a little deeper the orange does morph into sweetened grapefruit but that's deep.

This is by no means a hop bomb but the hop profile is the main force in the overall flavor. I can't describe much more than what the aroma showed me. This beer follows it nearly flawlessly. Crystal, candy like maltiness and slightly sweet caramel surround the orange, citric hoppy core. Odell serves up a candy driven red ale that is a sheer pleasure to drink.

I couldn't ask for a better mouthfeel. The body of this brew is medium and the carbonation is lively, pushing the liquid across the tongue quickly and leaving behind a pleasant bitterness. The feel, while moving at a quick pace, is silky smooth. Very nicely done.

If this red ale was available here I'd buy and drink it often. I could see myself going to this as a session brew often.

Odell makes some great beer and they raise the bar for the standard styles every other brewery around the country brews. The Red Ale keeps that tradition going with its great flavor and drinkability. Thanks for another treat, Bill!

poured into a fluted tasting glass. Deep copperish red with a one figner head with great retention and patchy lacing. Crystal clear.

Smell is Sugary with a great hop aroma of grapefruit and some apricots, and a little pine nose. I detect some rye malt also. his smells like a RyePA.

Taste is sweet and roasty malts with a lingering hop bitterness in the end. Decently complex witha a lot of flavors exposing themselves throughout the taste. Almost like a mixture of their Extra special Red and their IPA.

Mouth is on the higher end of medium bodied with a tingling and slightly oily finish. Great carbonation level! truly a wonderful brew. This will surely be a regular in the fridge.

Lightly hazed, deep crimson hue, fleeting beige-toned head.

Bright, malty aromatic. Fruity, hoppy

Taste: snappy, hoppy, full-bodied, malt-driven. Great texture, excellent mouthfeel, plentiful play on the palate. Wonderful dance of malt and hops.

Supreme drinkability, long hoppy finish. Quite satisfying, very easy to turn to another, and quickly empty it.

Bottle enjoyed in Estes Park, CO...quite stunning. The beer pours deep amber/mahogany with a well-made head of sticky bubbles. The aroma is pine and herbal grassiness with just a hint of brown sugar peeking through. Flavor favors malt more with caramel, shortbread, and biscuit. Hop flavor and bitterness is still firm with another hit of pine, some citrus, and an earthy element that separates it from other big American reds. Slightly resinous, oily mouthfeel along with the pine makes this perfect for a spring evening in the Rocky Mountains.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - Copper color leaning more towards the redish side.

S - The aromas on this one make this beer in my opinion. Strong fruity smells start (orange, some tropical like hints) followed by the hop grapefruit smell ending in a caramel like malty hint with a touch of spices. Some earthy wood tones. Smells like nature. AMAZING!

T - Taste is not what all of the smell would lead you to believe. Very balanced beer between the malts and hops however not as strong of a hop taste as the smell would lead to. Very tasty though. Alcohol is not noticeable whatsoever.

M - Medium body. Somewhat light on the carbonation.

O - If you see this get it! It is well worth a try. Very drinkable, amazing aromas.

Pours a beautiful dark red color with a nice sized cream colored head. Good head retention. Aroma is mostly hops, lots of pine and some citrus as well. There is a noticeable bit of malt in the background.

Taste is very hoppy. Very good pine and citrus flavors here. Some light caramel, and biscuity malt. Medium body that was well cabonated. A slightly dry finish. Very easy drinking. A great red ale. I will purchase again.

Purchased this one just out of curiousity, I had not heard or seen anything about it.

A - deep ruby red, almost brown w/ a decent sized tan head, w/ plenty of lacing to keep tack of my sips/gulps on the way down.

S - citrus and floral hops primarily, with some caramel malt in the backround

T - besides delic-ious-o you ask?? aggressive hop bitterness gives just a little to make way for a malty middle featuring some nice toffee and caramel notes, giveing it an almost nutty flavor. and closes w/ a nice hop bitterness.

MF - full, low carbonation, makes it a bit heavy

D - the flavor makes it a joy to drink, only thing is the abv, is a bit too high for this to be a sessionable beer, but i could definately kick back quite a few

this is a full bodied, aggresively hopped up American amber, full of flavor and bitterness w/ enough malt to give it some balance. this beer reminds me of an esb w/ more of a kick

i previously didn't care too much for ambers, i now see them in a new light and highly recommend this beer to both red fans, and hop-heads alike

Appearance: Pours a clear russet color with a three finger head with plenty of stickage

Smell: Citrus forward aroma, with plenty of pith; toffee subtleties underneath

Taste: Toffee malt, up front, that is quickly joined by a citrusy, but slightly grassy hop flavor; after the swallow, the toffee is resurgent, but there are plenty of bitter hop elements underneath

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: A very nice surprise for an amber; well-balanced, with layers of flavor

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass.

A real nice orange amber body, hints of red on the edges, and slow rising carbonation goes up. Head is a clumpy off tan, that has major retention and hang on everything. A real aggresive and impressive looking brew.

Nose brings a bounty of ripping malts and hops. Ripping grain action, with a hint of light toast. The hops have a little bit of earth quality, but get a bit herbal, making the malt even sweeter almost caramel dominant. Either way it's impressive.

Palate turns it down a bit though from everything anticipated. Light malts with some good doughy like density, ripping grain is turned down a bit, without the big husky quality. Hop angle seems a little lost, but brings some lingering sweetness of tea and herbs on the finish.

Overall though it's still an enjoyable brew from these guys and I can see myself drinking a lot of this very casually.

Deep dark coppery brown with a bit of brick red to it. Heavy glow to the body carrying a smeared appearance. Densely capped with a beige crown of firm foam standing to about a pinky high. Faintly thinned sheets and webby strings of lace coat the glass well.

Sweet dark red apple bready aroma with a bit of fresh leafy hoppyness, apricot, red rice, pale and red malts. Nice and clean, with a bit of crispness to it and tugs well on the nose.

Taste is smallish in the apple area with a semi dry undertone of red, toasted, and pale malt with a fresh grazing of grassy and leafy dried hoppyness. Breezy but a firm little sweetness sits a bit bready with some lighter honey and caramel swimming about. Airy finish with a fluffy ended light tone of bittering hops and buttered toast.

Clean lighter medium body with a nicely rounded and easy going sweetness that floats right through letting the little nuances of the flavors and dryness mingle their way onto the palate with a complexity worthy of any solid Red ale out there.

Pretty impressive stuff. Subtle, complex, with an easy to drink attitude. Odell knows how to make the simple styles seem just a bit more so, which is great. And this is definately one of those brews.

Huge thanks to coryking for sending some of this out to me. I've wanted to try this one for quite some time now. Served in a Hill Farmstead wine glass.

Pour yields a red-amber brew that is nearly see through with a good white head and loads of spotty lacing on the way down. The nose straight from the bottle after popping the cap screams hops with loads of pine and a bit of citrus. Really inviting. Great start. A bit of light amber malt in the background, but nowhere near balance. The flavor isn't quite as nice, adding in a bit more malt and just a touch of sweetness. Medium body and really nice bitterness in the finish. Quite a bit of piney hop flavor. Really nice brew overall. Super glad I finally got to try this one. Cheers.

Pour: Well, it's red alright. A deep, dark, clear burgundy red. Two and a half fingers of tan head that sticks around and laces the glass very nicely.

Aroma: Hop-forward aroma with grapefruit and some underlying tones of caramel malt.

Taste: Starts off with an acidic lemon twang with a semi-sweet caramel malt base. Classic biscuity amber middle is present but in a slightly lesser degree. A bit nutty toward the end, and then finishes up with a fairly assertive grapefruit hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Has a sort of smoothness to it, and a rather dry finish.

Drinkability/Overall: Smooth and easy drinking with lots to like about the taste. Not overly filling, but not exactly a session beer either.

Final Notes: A lovely interpretation of the style, with a kicked-up hop presence. It would be a good utility beer since it's hoppy enough for spicy foods but malty enough to go with anything else. I'll be returning for more.

A - Pours a dark ruby red color with three finger head. Lacing clings to side of the glass as head fades. Like spider webs on the glass.

S - Pine, citrus, grapefruit, orange.

T - Mild malty backbone up front followed by a wave of piney and citrus hops.

M - Light to medium body with good carbonation.

O - Another good beer from Odell. This is sort of a cross between a pale ale and IPA. Has a nice sort of fresh hop bite to it but has more of a malt backbone than a traditional IPA. Great spring seasonal.

A- Dark, cloudy, deep red. Head dissipated quickly.

S- Slight malt in the nose not overwhelming nose.

T- Rich, woody malt right on the forefront with plenty of hop to compete for attention.

M- Definitely could have been bigger I would call this a light medium bodied ale.

O- I would order this ale again. I found myself looking for more than what was there which may be because I like bigger ales. Probably not very helpful in this review but it is what it is. Cheers.

Presentation: 12 oz longneck, standard Odell bottle. ABV and date are both clearly marked, label is a goat who looks a bit satanic, but the style matches the rest of the Odell logos.

Appearance: Pours clear red, nice head with good retention and lacing.

Smell: Lots of hops, grassy with a bit of sticky pine resin.

Taste: Lighter body than I expected from the aroma, hops are dominant but not the top. Quite a bit of malty flavor, but I can't pin down specifics.

Overall impression: Highly drinkable, some good flavors. This seems like a mellower version of their Extra Special Red.

Poured into a goblet.

A: Garnet hued amber with nice clarity and active carbonation from tiny bubbles. Tight cream head starts strong before settling to a thin film. Leaves patches of lace.

S: Slightly vinous, with hints of red grapes. A toffee sweetness is also at work. Lemon, grapefruit, plus a little oak round things out.

T: This a very balanced beer. Toffee and dark fruits start things out. Bitterness comes on in the form of citrus and pepper. Finishes dry and woodsy with a mild lingering grapefruit and lemon flavor.

M: Medium body is somewhat dry. Carbonation level is right on.

D: This is a really nice beer. It reminds me a bit of the Extra Special Red that Odell did in '09, only toned down in the alcohol department. That's a good thing, as I enjoyed that beer and am fond of this one as well.

Pours red with great clarity and a light brown head.

Hops jump out of the glass from the get-go in the aroma. Red delicious apple skins, piney and grassy hops, with a soft malt background that takes a while to define itself.

Bready malts eventually work their way out past the piney west coast hops in the flavor. The mouthfeel could be bulked up a bit, but it's light nature makes for a really drinkable hoppy beer.

Worth a try! One of the nicer spring seasonals for the midwest.

s: immediately struck with a nosefull of fresh, pulpy citrus hops - grapefruit, tangerine - resting on a malty dark caramel body evoking torched sugars and dark cookies, some pineapple lurking

m: carbonation medium, body about the same

t: the taste follows the nose - juicy citrus hops set this red/amber apart from the crowd, most notably sweet grapefruit and tangerine, nice grainy caramel body, dark bread, appropriately bitter, seamlessly balanced

d: easy - a satisfactory six-pack pickup

A random single I grabbed on a recent trip to the US.

A - Pours a hazy dark orange colour with a rudy red hue, solid finger of soapy white head, solid retention and nice spotty lacing.

S - Sweet citrus hops, surprisingly resiny, hints of sugary maple and a touch of caramel on the finish.

T - Nice sweet citrus hops off the top, nicely balanced with a rich caramel malt backbone, touch of resiny hops linger alongside hints of citrus rind and pineapple.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and touch of dryness on the finish.

O - Incredibly tasty red ale, solid hop presence but nicely balanced with the caramel malts. Highly recommended and incredibly drinkable. This stuff on tap, I would imagine, would be irresistible.

Served into a tulip glass. Odell always does a nice job with their seasonal beers, the Extra Special Red was one of my favorite reds, but now the "Red" has turned into a nice spring classic.

A= Good looking beer, copper-red, with off-white head, short retention.

S= The smell is not quite as intense as I would prefer, but it makes for a nice search that reveals smokiness and carmel.

T= The is a great red. the spicy, hop and bold, malt balance is warmly welcome.

M= Short, not that of some of my favorite barley wines, but a nice after taste and smooth mouthfeel.

D= The drinkablity is not that of a beer that you play drinking games with (thank god) but it is superb in that you go back for more quickly.

Overall= This beer is a great spring classic, not a light spring beer, but not that of many spring barley wines, a blend of what we all love of winter and must say good bye, with a touch of summer, showing its temptation for a nice beer to be enjoyed in the warm sun.
