Pours a sexy amber with off-white head that is thick at first then recedes to a thin layer that remains for the pint. Nose has a very nice fruity component, perhaps passion fruit or at least a very mixed batch of fruit aromas. A generous toffee sweetness is welcomed onto the palate at first, with plenty of "juicy fruit" hoppiness in the balance. There's a slight candied quality to this ale too. Finish is toffee sweet with lingering citrus. Very drinkable and quite delicious.

Beautiful deep red color with a great thick tan head, which dissipates quickly leaving a thick lacing. Smells like an IPA, citrus hops with a small amount of malts breaking through. I'm a little worried as the bottle promises a Red Ale, not an IPA. After tasting, I'm quite torn on this one; it tastes excellent but is a bit more an IPA. Bright citrus and piney hops up front followed by the malty bready kick I was looking for. Expertly carbonated and smooth.
What can I say? It's fantastic if not completely true to style.

12 oz bottle. Pours a deep reddish amber with a creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet fruity, piney, resiny hops with a little pepper and some nutty malts.
The flavor is sweet caramel malts and fruit with a nice piney lightly resinous hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with smooth carbonation.
Overall, a very nice drinking well balanced beer. It has some great hop flavors.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A:Deep auburn brown with red and rich orange tones. Pours a thick, heavy, bready head and leaves very nice lace down the entire glass.
S: Citrus & pine hops dominate the aroma. Sweet caramel, baked goods.
T: Upfront floral hops ride the length of this one. Sweet malts complete the finish.
M: Great thickness, foamy head rides the palate.
D: Best beer I've ever had from Odell. Happy drinking!

A: Pours a clear dark red amber with a thick 2 finger head, great retention and lacing.
S: Fresh and ripe red apple, pomegranite and asian pear combined with pungent floral and citrus hops, clean.
T: Excellent. Sweet crystal malt with a mellow caramel and red apple flavor which is completely taken over by hop flavors of pine, grass, mint and herbs. Good balance and as a reviewer said below, "While most hoppy reds really blur the line between red and IPA this is a quality balance between the more malty reds and the super hoppy reds." The aftertaste has a bold and agressive hop flavor that lingers for quite some time, you are sure to enjoy if youre a hop head
M: Medium bodied with perfect carbonation, an oily stickiness lingers on the palette after each sip but is not overwhelming.
D: Goes down pretty easily and at 6.5%, I could drink it happily through the night.
I must have received a very fresh batch of this stuff, because it was excellent. Also of note, this year's release is way better than the last few years if that turned you off. And if you aren't normally a huge fan of reds (like myself,) definitely give this one a try.
Another great beer from Odell!

I've always enjoyed Odell's Extra Special Red and IPA. According to the brewery, they won't be making ESR any more but this is taking it's place landing somewhere in between the two in taste.
"A variety of agressive American hops..."
Pours from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. It has copper red color with just a slight haze. The inch of head wanes slowly leaving some nice lacing behind.
Aroma is really nice with lots of hops showing off pineapple and grapefruit with some fruity sweetness.
Flavor is very well done too with lots of great hoppy taste yet balanced with sweet carmel-like malts. The hops have a definate west coast character with pine and citrus coming through strong. Grassy hop flavors in there too.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, bitter but balanced, and nicely carbonated.
Certainly one of the more hoppy American red ales I've had and all the better for it. I could also see it being called a red IPA. Either way, another great beer from Odell.

Picked a sixer of this up at Susan's Fine Wine and Spirits in Santa Fe. According to the beer guy there, the new red is similar to the old Extra Special Red, except less malt and more hop flavors.
A: Poured into a poor man's pint, was a nice deep golden-red color. Came out with a nice solid inch of very light head, which left consistent lacing throughout the drink.
S: Still a fair amount of malt, but you can definitely tell that this has more hops than the Extra Special Red. Almost has a little bit of a sweet, spicy scent to it. Maybe a hint of paprika almost.
T: Fantastic. Great up front malt. Throughout there was a pleasant citrus flavor going along with it, and it finished with a sweet and fairly strong hop flavor.
M: Incredibly full and refreshing. I really enjoyed the fullness of this one; after a full day out hiking, this was great to sit down to.
D: At 6.5%, this beer is just at the threshold of being too strong for a session beer. However, I will say that I've very comfortably killed my 6 pack in two nights, and I plan on going down and buying up a case while it's here. Highly recommended if you're a fan of reds.

poured a clear red-brown with a medium even head which was nice and sticky, laced well and kept a constant film on the top
nose was earthy, definite blast of hops which was very nice for an amber/red. resiny piney hops lead the charge as well as soapy, spicey, and grapefruit notes. malt backbone was more defined as it warmed and the further i dug my nose in
taste was equally as exceptional, an extension of the nose which was a good thing. the definite hops kick at first was eventually balanced by the malt. sweeter as it warmed. fantastic. surprisingly clean citrus/toasted finish
feel was medium bodied, crisp carbonation and a definite bite from the liberal use of hops. slick and sticky was the verdict
nice spin on a typical red. Odell went a little hop happy. almost to the point of an IPA, which i assure you was not a problem. perhaps the best amber/red ive tried. excellent beer, try it

Found myself in Colorado and just had to try the Red from Odell.
Pours a very bright copper with a slight ruby character. A cream head with slight lacing throughout.
A very heavy smell of hops that provides the fragrance and stength - almost indescernable from an IPA.
Taste is a wonderful mix of a strong IPA and a traditional red. A truly great experience!
Mouthfeel was good with a high degree of drinkability; good thing I had a lot of company to share them with!! :)

Thanks goes out to Bitterbill for this brew.
Pours a very nice amber color, nice carbonation, very nice one-finger creamy tan head, with some nice sticky lacing to follow. The nose is malty, with some hops, slight citrus even. The taste is very nice, a nice little hop bomb, with some malts, citrus. Medium body, with a nice dry/bitter finish. Very drinkable, this brewery surprises me just about every time I try something from them, way to go Odell, thanks Bill.

Another one in the mini tasting the other night. This one was a bit of a surprise I have to say. Served cold and poured into taster /glasses, this one was consumed on 07/10/2009.
The pour was nice. Rich dark amber in color with a nice bit of carbonation streaming up toward the top of the glass, coalescing into a inch high head that left some decent web like lace. The aroma was at first bready malts, a touch of caramel and a hint fo grassy like notes. Smooth and mellow. As I take a sip a nice medium bodied ale with smooth carbonation washes over the tongue. Rich and malty, these flavors dont last as a nice burst of piney hops now takes over, where did this come from? Very nicely balanced here with a smooth, very nice here, I have to admit. Easily sessionable this was an unexpected hit.
Overall a bit hoppier then normal for the style I have to say, but it worked well. It made it stand out from the crowd a bit and I really enjoyed it. I wouldnt mind a sixer of this one.

Odell Red Ale 12oz bottle into slender tulip
Body is transparent red with gold and caramel highlights. Produces a two inch head from a moderate-slow pour, with a mix of tiny and course sandy colored bubbles with nice sticky lace throughout and good retention.
Big caramel malty sweetness as it's poured into the glass, and grapefruit rind and tropical fruit is present on the nose after the pour. The aroma is very intense, and quite inviting.
Taste starts off with a big sweet caramel chewyness, and draws into a tangerine/citrus hop bite that is much less intense than the nose would lead one to believe. The hops are a perfume-like and floral one the palette. There is a little bit of chocolate/nutty flavor as it warms a bit.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and carbonation is a little low. It's a little on the refreshing side of things, especially since the ABV is 6.5%, I was expecting it to be a bit heavier than this. Not bad though, just not quite what I was expecting.
This is pretty tasty, and I could throw back a few, especially since it is quite well balanced.

16oz Tap pour into a standard pint at Pizza Luce.
A- deep amber/ copper with a nice fluffy head
S- Hops really come through. Pine is prevalent as well as citrus- healthy dose of grapefruit here. Nice bready malt background to boot.
T- Wow. Nice hop bite from the get-go. Pine and grapefruit apparent. A decent background of bready/caramely malt. Reminiscent of a well-crafted IPA.
M- Medium body and carbonation. Nice dry bitter finish.
D- Dangerous brew right here, too drinkable.
Overall, an amazing amber that is the best I've had for the style. I'm a fan.

The Odell's Red is, in my opinion, their best seasonal by a long shot. Sweet, malty, hoppy, creamy....overall a great product with very little fan fare.
The Red is a vibrant amber red with a lasting two finger head. It is as described above, a blend of goodness that could be 'ol trusty if it were around more often. Something I love to drink after a day of enjoying CO's many outside activities but with dreams of sipping on one at a hot summer Rox game. We all have dreams but at least today I have Red. Cheers.

From notes-
This beer pours a beautiful copper red with a white head.
Aroma is strong of citrus, grapefruit grass with a slight honey sweet maltiness in the background.
The taste starts out with a mouth coating citrusy and pine bitterness, then comes a brief interruption of a biscuity honey malt sweetness, then ends out with a dry grassy and citrusy finish.
Aside from the hop bitterness, this beer goes down real smooth.
Overall, not as good as Extra Special Red, but this is an excellent american red

Served from a 12oz bottle
Let me start by saying that although I am pretty bummed out that extra special red is gone along with the rest of the single batch series (which was awesome), I am happy that the new replacement series teed off with this beer, it's pretty damn good.
A-Murky deep amber with a small white head, decent retention and awesome lacing.
S-Cereal grains, caramel, piney hops.
T-SO well balanced. Nice rich sweet maltiness that has a funky intermingling with lemon grass hop flavor that rolls into a deep raosty and caramel malt flavor with a deep long lasting bitterness. Really tasty.
M-Nice, thick enough body but thin enough to drink easily. Good Co2.
D- Yeah buddy. Really flavorful and not filling. A great flavorful session beer or a decent sipper.
As always Odell's knocks another homerun.

Poured from the bottle into a perfect pint glass
A-Off copper not overly deep but no where near pale. Light head not even 1 finger but laces well down the glass.
S-Sweet fruit or citrus notes. Nice mellow malt and some lightly floral hops
T-Shines the most where is matters. Very good mild hop flavor with a sweet malt middle that finishes crisp and clean. Subtle malt and hops so that neither are overbearing and go to together so very well.
M-Medium body near perfect carbonation.
D-This is one I will miss when its gone and just reminds me why I love this brewery so much.

A - Pours a deep, clear, reddish amber color with a somewhat small, tan head. Despite the minimal head, it retains well and leaves some solid lacing behind.
S - Complex hop aromas jump out first - piney, citric, spicy, and floral notes. Balanced out with some toasty, sweet, caramel malt aroma.
T - Fairly hop-centric flavor. The hops contribute a distinct herbal/floral quality as well as a touch of citrus and pine. The toasty, caramel malt comes through in the middle giving some balance without overdoing the sweetness. Finishes rather dry and leaves some herbal, piney flavors lingering into the aftertaste, somewhat reminiscent of some good ganja.
M - Medium bodied with a smooth feel
D - Another tasty brew from Odell. Definitely leaning towards the hoppier side, but enough malt to maintain a nice balance. Enjoyed this one a lot, and will definitely have to revisit it.

back and better than ever (or so i hear)... pours a not fully red and perfectly clear amber color lighter than expected. nose is piney hops and a dusty caramely red malt. more hoppy than sweet, and in fact more hoppy than most red ales. taste is epic, huge depth and tons of hops for the genre. agressive and lasting. just short of an ipa, or rather, much too much going on to be just an ipa, like drinking a the redwood forest. this beer rocks. mouthfeel is way up there, fuller bodied and strong, but drinkable like no other. what a session! odell is blowing my mind every new one i try. wow. this is a fantastic early spring seasonal

Tangy! I totally get the grapefruit flavor everyone mentions on here. This is a very good red. The hops are all over the place, shaming many a so-called "ipa" My head didn't retain on this particular pour but it is leaving some nice lacing on the pint glass. The beer smells quite hoppy as well. A nice, easy drinking red that I will definitely come back to in the future.

This is an amazing brew from Odells in Colorado it smells great reminding me of the aroma of a glass of Guava juice that i used to have when I was a kid in other words it has a very fruity smell.I had taken it out of the fridge and poured it from the bottle into a pilsner glass, this beer isn't the best too cold as i first found the cold numbs the flavor out and all you are left with is a very bitter taste with no flavor. Let this beer sit in your mouth and warm up and you will find a wonderful bouquet of flavor with a taste full of hops, pine, and that fruity flavor you could smell. Overall i was very pleased with my purchase and very happy I still have 5 of them left in my fridge.

A cloudy, copper colour with an eggshell head. The beer smells citrus-hoppy and sweet, with a slight malt scent. The beer tastes like citrus and hops right away, almost like a grapefruit flavour. It finishes clean, with a slight sweetness to it.

Got this cool lookin red thanks to Doodler.
A: A semi thick frothy head rises over a very clear dark reddish brown "deck-stain" like color. As the head slowly fades it leaves a nice lacing.
N: Pretty interesting nose, with some spicy fresh hops right away. Like fresh wet hops. Then some dark malts, little crystal malt. Not much else as the fresh hops really just overpower it all. I'm now wondering if I should have let this sit a bit first as the fresh hops may be too much for a red ale.
T: Taste is much easier on the hops. It starts with a slightly sweet malts. Mostly caramel/crystal, then some toasty malts. Slightly sweet brown sugar molasses like flavors, followed with some toffee. All that is followed by some lighter hop flavors. A slight bitterness with some grassy and spicy hop flavors, and a little earthy musty fresh wet hop. Slight chewy malt and hop combination hidden in there as well. A very slight bright fruit flavor as well.
M: Medium body with good carbonation.
F: Finish dries off a bit more, and comes with a slight bitter spicy hop flavor that hits more on the end. It adds more of that caramel and toasted roast, and slight porter flavors late. A lingering earthy bitterness from the hops really continue late.
Overall a really nice red ale. I'm usually not a big fan of red ales, but this really redefines what I thought of them. It has some nice malty caramel sweetness, and combined with a great hop character, despite being a little too much on the nose.

Picked up a sixer from Total Wine back in mid January for $8.99.
Beer poured a deep copper color with a nice off white head that is leaving lacing behind. Nose is very good, strong malt presence combining with a very pleasant citrus aroma. Taste is pretty balanced; caramel hops form a nice backbone, hop finish is citrusy and piney. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and very smooth for the style. Overall drinkability is very good. This is a very good beer that is well balanced and easy to drink for fans used to an IPA level of hops in their beer.

Bottle reads 4/26/11B
A= The pour is a beautiful deep amber color that is completely translucent. The head is rather small with a mixture of large soapy bubbles and tiny bubbles holding some steady retention and lacing.
S= The smell is a great combination of caramelly malts and spicy hops. It sort of reminds me of Summits extra pale ale if they used more of a west coast hop variety. The malt bill must be similar. The hops are more fruity and a little piney.
T= Excellent taste. Just what I was hoping for actually. A nice combination of sweet caramel malt and nice spicy hops. While most hoppy reds really blur the line between red and IPA this is a quality balance between the more malty reds and the super hoppy reds. Really nice biscuit character hidden a little deeper in there. Excellent beer.
M= Nice smooth carbonation that doesn't get out of hand.
D= Another home run from Odells. They may be becoming one of my favorite breweries quickly. These guys do awesome work. Worth checking out. I went into the liquor store today hoping to just find something drinkable and I got it. Awesome beer!
