served on tap at the brewery
Pours a lightly hazed auburn copper color with a one-finger high crop of white head resting on top. Fades into a cloud of film, leaving a spotty coating of film on the glass while drinking.
Familiar citrusy and tropical hop punch from the base beer in the nose, trailed by citrus zest, orange and grapefruit. Caramel and bread crust malts with toasted notes, oak and a hint of vanilla. Bourbon warmth lurks underneath.
Bitter smack of West coast style hops with grapefruit and pithy citrus right up front. Slight tropical touch with a hint of pineapple and light sweetness. Fuller backbone with caramel and bread crust. Vanilla and bourbon notes with charred oak and sticky resin. The boozy build up from the barrel aging builds more on the back end, delivering a mild heat which meshes pretty well with the aggressive-leaning hop profile.
Medium body, decent carbonation, sticky, dry and lingering on the tongue. Barrel aging IPAs is infrequently successful, but I enjoyed the added dimension of bourbon, vanilla and oak as it didn't completely wreck the rest of the profile.
