Thanks to dfclav for sending me this in a big random box of goodies for another essentially. Shared with rudzud and others.

Decent fizzy head rises quickly and fades quickly, just about pitch black beer.

Nose had a slight infection sour or possibly just a very acrid roast mineral character, then dark malts, some roast and super dark malts, bit of roast, char, faint hint of bourbon barrel.

Taste starts rich with dark malts, little creamy, light choc and roast, fluffy, earthy char, bitter roast and light barrel char, hint of bourbon barrel, super dark choc and creamy choc. Some Belgian dark stout flavours too. Finish is sticky sweet and syrupy, light booze and bitter dark choc lingering.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, nice carb, hint of booze.

Overall not bad, but not super special, nice dark malts and Belgian dark malts, faint barrel notes, interesting beer

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown with a thin mocha head that fades to leave a thin blanket.

S - Aromas of light sour funk, perhaps infection, no real barrel. Light chocolate aromas, faint cherries.

T - Taste is nice roasted toffee and caramel, chocolate, light cherries, gentle roast, lingering,

M - Mouthfeel is a bit sharp, semi distracting.

O - Overall I was semi disappointed, a bit sour.

Reviewed from notes taken on 12/8/2012.

Not quite pitch black, capped by a billowy tan head. Some sticky lacing. This has the best visual characteristics of both a quad and an imperial stout going for it. Aroma shows notes of quad and imperial stout but they never truly meld harmoniously. Chocolate maltiness abruptly interrupted by fruit note that's like white grape. Surprisingly estery.

A lot going on in the flavor department. More like a quad upfront - sugary, dark fruit. Then more like an imp stout - rich malt profile, roasted grain. Good sweet / bitter balance, could actually be sweeter. Carbonation is too fizzy, harsh. Champagne yeast is not a good fit for the style.

This beer had a lot of potential but the harsh texture was a major knock against it. It seems plenty of others on BA felt the same.

I poured from a bomber into A SA perfect pint. I was nearly killed when I took the cage off, the cork shut up to the ceiling. The beer is way over carbonated, first pour, all head. when it settles down the beer is jet black with a rock solid white head. the aroma is sweet dark fruit. the taste follows the nose, can not really taste the BA stout. The Finnish is sweet, boozey. Disappointed in this one, the 30 percent stout is not detectable, was hoping for more.

The cage on this is wound really tight and as I'm fighting with that it gets loose enough that the cork is able to explode off the top of the bottle and hints me on the side of the head. WTF! I still can't find the cork, or maybe I have a concussion. Seriously at fridge temp it came off like a champagne cork. I poured this quickly because I was afraid of the mess it was going to make, but surprisingly most of the carbonation stayed in suspension, I'm thankful I opened this right out of the fridge. Pours a solid slightly hazy dark brown with a huge foamy tan head that takes forever to recede and leaves some stickies on the sides of the glass. The aroma is sweet and fruity with a roasty edge to it. Lots of plums cherries and raisins with a fair amount of caramel and brown sugar and a hint of coffee and chocolate. Spicy yeasty esters remind us that this is a Belgian inspired brew. The flavor follows the aroma quite well, but adds a bit of oxidation and a hint of ash to the mix. Medium to thick body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet bubbly mouthfeel. Not a bad tasting brew. Its obviously way over carbonated which affects the mouthfeel, and based on the residual sweetness I can only see that getting worse. Thanks to Alex M for giving me the opportunity to be impaled by cork ;)

Appearance: 750ml corked and caged bottle. Served in a Chimay trappist glass. Cork removed with a loud pop. Beer poured a dark brown with 2 fingers of a thick tan head. Head stuck around through the whole glass, leaving some nice lacing.

Smell: Candied sugar, rasin, fig, alcohol, slight vanilla.

Taste: Basically follows the nose. Starts off very sweet. Lots of dark fruit, candied sugar, red grape. Alcohol is hidden fairly well. Finishes with a slight roasted coffee bitterness to help balance things out a bit, but this is still a very sweet beer. Slight bourbon in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Leaning more towards the fuller side of medium bodied. LOTS of carbonation. This beer was tearing up my tongue while in the mouth.

Overall: Overall I'm not sure what to make of this beer. It had some nice Belgian quad characteristics, which I liked, but the main problems it has are it's too sweet and overcarbonated. This is a blend of 70% belgian dark ale and 30% bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, but the flavor is dominated by the quad characteristics. The only hint of an imperial stout comes in the finish and aftertaste and even then it's more of a background note. The lack of bourbon and barrel characteristics were a little disappointed as well. Overall this was a decent brew, but has a few flaws that really hold it back from being very good or great. I'm glad I tried it, but would probably not pick it up again.

750mL bottle poured into tulip - thanks brad

Beware of the cork - this shot off almost as soon as the cage was taken off. Blacked out pour with a lightly tanned head resting on top. Slowly dissolves into thick patchy lacing on the glass with spotty film.

Mix of dark fruits, burnt sugar and rich, roasted malts in the nose with oak and soft bourbon. Vanilla with raisins and dates. Hoppy bite and alcohol warmth.

Decent blending of the two different styles with dark fruit and oaky bourbon. Chocolate and vanilla swirled with raisins and dates. Full malty backbone, toasted oak, bread crust. Finishes boozy and sweet.

Wildly overcarbonated, rough and bubbly on the tongue. Drinks alright, but I'm not sure if this would benefit from more time in the bottle or not.
