Appearance: sunny, orange, hazy, white collar, light lace.
Aroma: heavy pineapple, tropical fruitiness, orange, grapefruit, mango, with an assertive pine note.
Taste: tropical fruit sweetness, mangos, papaya, pineapple, orange zest, light maltiness, intense bitterness and linger. Light pine needles on the finish.
***Not quite as drinkable as the Head High. No alcohol could be perceived, but its very intense on the palate. Great flavors and aromas, still. Broken up into sections, the growler was manageable...anything otherwise would have be a chore!
Thanks Jon!

Growler poured into a tulip
A brilliant orange color with a touch of haze. About one finger of off-white foam and some moderate lacing revealing sip marks coats the inside of the glass.
Big piney bitterness leaps first. Grapefruit, papaya, guava, weed, pineapple, and apricot round out a strong nose. A very faint whiff of alcohol and some sweet malt underneath.
Huge simcoe notes throughout this beer. Big piney bitterness from start to finish, with juicy tropical fruit. Sweet malt is low in the mix, pummeled by a huge hop profile. Notes of papaya, guava, pineapple, apricot poke through the middle before a bitter rush of pine resin and ruby red grapefruit in the finish.
Medium body, chewy and resiny. The bitterness on this guy builds considerably with each sip. By the end of my second glass, the bitterness is clinging to my teeth. Definitely an enamel ripper.
This is an excellent DIPA. Reminds me of double simcoe meets ghandi bot with a dose of abrasive. Nice job, Kane.

the store listed this @ 8.6%... just sayin...
eyes...
frothy white head of about the one finger variety, nice sticky lacing slimes the glass, slightly muddy orange hue, a slightly above average looking sort of thing...
nose...
I could smell this across the room, I am surprised no one else has said how much this smells like weed, I don't even smoke (well, not in a long ass time anyhoo), huge resin-y juicy fruit explosion that makes your mouth water, well... if you love da hops.. and I do, this is bubble gum chewy chew-ariffic, citrus notes lend a nice sour note to the mix. this is up there scent wise for DIPAs in my book, just some really strong unadulterated stuff here.. nice !
taste...
hoppy. duh... a bit of a let down compared to the aroma which was toe curling... this drinks like an extra bitter APA, the malt seems a touch lacking and this really packs a bitter punch, the grapefruit flavors try and sometimes succeed in saving this from turning bad, it manages to really kick you in the teeth with hop power but doesn't destroy your mouth with the aftertaste like many DIPAs, the carbonation is nice and crisp and definitely is a plus here, this pushes the limit of acceptable bitter...
verdict?
I dig it, not my fave but for a local ? please.. I would order this in a hot second out at the local bars, it needs just a bit more balance to be a DIPA killer but as it is ? really good an d one of the best smelling beers I have run across in some time.

Growler from FreeBridge.
Bold clear amber body. Three fingers plus of level bubbly white froth.
Powerful enticing inviting aroma, dominated by fresh pineapple, with grapefruit, apricot, and orange citrus and pine in strong supporting roles.
A sweet caramel beginning, too slippery to be called a foundation. An orchard of juicy citrus, featuring an abundance of fresh pineapple, and also grapefruit, orange, and a dose of pine also. Low grade hop bite. This is all about the fresh fruit, not the bitter or the alcohol.
Medium-plus mouthfeel is smooth as glass.
An extremely enjoyably, highly tasty nonabrasive DIPA. Highly recommended.

Many, many thanks to Millerbuffoon for generously sharing this growler.
A - Pours a medium copper orange color with a thin ring of lacing and super mild carbonation.
S - Lightly earthy and herbally light pungency with little to no malt aroma and light citrus. The aroma is mild, would expect more intensity from a big beer like this.
T - Earthy and herbal light flavor with spearmint, orange, and spice.
M - Medium to full body that's just right for this particular beer.
O - The alcohol level of this beer is completely hidden and no alcohol effervescence whatsoever, nicely done for this ABV.

Joe Canal's Groweler, Poured into Duvel Tulip Glass
A: A transparent copper color, with a nice foamy finger head at the top that stayed through the whole thing, and a nice sticky lacing around the glass that never disappeared.
S: The smell was malty with some strong hop notes coming through, lots of citrus, some honey and pineapple notes as well.
T: This beer taste great, very well balanced. Nice mixture of the malts and hops, a nice bitterness on the tail end, at first sip though is nothing but sweetness, citrus and honey.
M: Medium bodied, smooth, not to much carbonation.
O: Happy that New Jersey has a little gem in Kane Brewing, fantastic brew, first time trying Kane and was not disappointed.

First had: on tap at Brickwall Tavern, Asbury Park, NJ
Well this was a pleasant surprise. Very nice IPA here! Slightly hazy golden-amber color with a well-retaining white head that left layers of lacing on the glass. Nice aroma of fresh hops, citrus and tropical fruit, underlying biscuity malt sweetness. More of the same in the taste, fresh and crisp with citrus hops, tropical fruits, pine needles, good balance of bitterness and biscuity malt sweetness, higher ABV was well-hidden. Medium body, and quite enjoyable, enough for me to go back for seconds. My first beer from Kane, and hopefully not my last.

Served on tap at Cork City Pub in Hoboken, NJ
A: Pours a very lightly hazy golden orange in color with light amounts of visible carbonation and just a touch of deeper orange highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall thin white head that slowly reduces to a a small to medium patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: There are light to moderate amounts of caramel malt sweetness with stronger aromas of tropical/pineapple, grapefruit/citrus, and pine hops.
T: Upfront there are light to moderate amounts of malts with some caramel sweetness. On top of the malts, there is a strong flavor of hops - citrus/orange zest,
M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly sticky with just a touch of dryness in the finish.
O: This is an enjoyable beer but just a bit too sweet for my tastes in the DIPA style - I would definitely get another of these if I came across it again.

on tap at the brewery
Pours a hazed golden orange color with a crop of white head. Retains well, leaving sticky, patchy lacing on the glass.
Intense citrus nose with relentless pine hop bitterness. Grapefruit and pineapple with some underlying sweetness. Biscuit, bread crust and caramel with a spike of boozy warmth.
Crushing hoppy bitterness on the tongue, jammed with a citrus bonanza of grapefruit, orange and pineapple. Some sticky pine tones lurk throughout the continued bitterness. Sizable malt backbone with bread, biscuit and caramel. Fairly sweet on the back end, but the sticky, bitter hops linger on the tongue with dryness and warmth.
Medium body, well carbonated, sticky, dry and lingering on the tongue. Another well crafted, hopped up brew from Kane that I keep coming back to whenever it's available.

Appearance: Arrives with a thin head perhed on the hazy amber liquid; a fair amount of lacing action
Smell: Tropical fruit explosion led by pineapple; sweet malt underneath
Taste: Sugary malt, up front, but the hops come to the rescue quickly, bringing pineapple, grapefruit and apricot flavors; the fruit and the bitterness meld together nicely in the finish, keeping the sweetness almost in check
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation
Overall: Although this verges on being too sweet, it is a DIPA and, as such, handles the balance effectively; another top notch beer from a brewery that knows how to make an IPA

On tap at Maloney s in matawan.
Arrives in a 14 oz pint style glass with almost no head.
Aroma is huge with Piney hop flavors and resin.
First sip is an explosion of Piney hops. Whoa flavor! What a huge hop
Bomb, not typically seen In an east coast IPAs. Bitterness is big but not harsh.
This beer is a huge unexpected surprise. I liked Kane before but this is truly a fantastic dipa. I would get this again in a heartbeat.

Served in a pint glass at the Cloverleaf Tavern.
Kane Overhead pours a fairly clear amber, with plentiful orange highlights. About a finger and a half of white foam cap the beer. Head retention is just OK, but the rings of lacing left behind are fairly thick. The nose is an absolute pineapple bomb. There's a little bit of grapefruit there too, but pineapple is by far the star of the show. The maltiness, while subtle, is complex, with caramel and bready notes playing off each other. The hop bitterness is almost disappointing in its mildness. The finish is once again very pineapple heavy, with mango joining grapefruit as secondary notes. The body is just a little too full for my taste, but I'm really splitting hairs there. The carbonation is wonderfully lively, bringing the hops to the forefront. I shouldn't be surprised at how good Overhead is, given how much I like Kane's regular IPA Head High. Still, this is definitely one of the better IIPAs on the east coast.

Semi hazy Orange glow with a thin white head. Can already tell the lacing is amazing.
Piney and grapefruit hop resin on the nose with a touch of citrus. Some floral notes with a faint scent of caramel. Incredibly smooth.
Slick rounded mouthfeel. Full bodied. Sweet caramel and pale malt up front rides through along the sides of the tongue into a giant grapefruit and piney hop bomb. Undertones of other citrus fruit. Assertive hop bitterness balances the sweetness of the malt. Throat clearing and soothing bitterness. Big long finish. Hop resin lingers on the back of the tongue.
Not complex in the least but one of the smoothest dipas I've ever had. Standard but well put together flavors.

@ Maloney's in Matawan in a port brewing pint glass
Kane hasn't disappointed yet!
Average amber color with 1.5 finger head. I almost thought the waitress got me a pint of head high at first - that wouldve been great also but if I wanted head high I wouldve gone to a closer bar.
smell was floral with fresh malts. reminded me over hoptium, distinct smell from an aggressive dry hop (hope im right about that). would like to see the hop profile
Taste was delicious and surpassed expectations. Dry bitterness well balance by a healthy malt backbone. As this beer goes down a little bit of sweetness tickles the back of your mouth.
Overall I loved this beer. This review may not be great as I do not remember most of the tasting notes and did not write them down as I should have. I will say im proud Kane is making god beer from new jersey. They're probably brewing the best offerings in the state right now, can't wait to try some of their bottled beers being released soon.

When I reviewed Head High IPA I exclaimed that it was the best beer brewed in New Jersey and I was right, at the time. This DIPA from Kane Brewing has knocked it off its pedestal for me.
I had this at a Meet the Brewer event at the Taphouse Grille in Wayne, NJ. So I got to talk to Mike Kane about this one. He confirmed that the hopping is a little different and that explains the fact that, while it smells quite a bit like Head High, it's got a bit more of a grapefruit kick to it. That's thanks to some Simcoe (my favorite!) and Amarillo hops.
The ABV is higher, but with the bitterness up there, it wouldn't be all that sessionable anyway. After two of these my palate begged for mercy but didn't complain at all when I had a third.
Kane still manages to impress me with everything they produce and I can't wait for something Mike said might be out in October.
